Vivaldi– four Seasons

Composed in 2002, Nat Yontararak dedicated this Sonata to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej on the occasion of his 75th birthday on December 5th 2002.

The South (Allegro tempestoso)
	
Written in the Rondo form, this movement takes its main tune from “Krao Talung’’ which is repeated three times. The two other tunes inserted in the main tune are “Kreed Yang’’ (tapping the rubber tree), also known as ‘’Mongleya’’ and “Pateh’’. Energetic and upbeat, this movement reflects the intense and aggressive nature of the Southern dialect and dance, with the drums as the lead instruments and driving force from the beginning to the end. The audience will be enthralled by the powerful expressions of synchronized sounds and rhythms. The final section of the movement brings back the intense harmony from the first movement ending with a grand maestoso and rousing theme of Krao Talung to its final climax.

III. The North (Larghetto)
	
The composition now moves into an atmosphere of serenity, gracefulness and calm, like the Northern dialect. The 700-year Lanna Kingdom has inherited a mysterious charm and lush forests of the past. The tune “Ngiew Ramluek’’ or “Mongsae Saemong Talum Tummong’’ is a perfect symbol of this nature. Traditional Thai music usually takes on a two-beat meter, but this tune, in the main section at the beginning and the end, has been transformed into the three-beat meter. The middle section remains in the original rhythmic form, which is more concise, reminiscent of the graceful dance and charm of the Northerners.

II. The Northeast (Allegretto Scherzando) 

Beginning with “Ho Sam La’’ (three salutes) and followed by “Toey Sam Changwa’’ (three rhythmic sections of Toey Song), the movement is an imitation of the sound of the Kaen, a traditional wind instrument of this region. The first two sections open the movement with the second being an interplay of two independent parts the left hand challenging the right hand. This middle section is in a major key, which is reminiscent of the gentle and sincere nature of the Northeastern people. The third Toey section comes in during the last refrain, its playfulness symbolizing a Northeastern dance, as well as the lively and happy nature of Thai People.

Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music, Thailand, is a unique conservatory of music with a contemporary approach to classical music. Initiated in 2007 as a royal project celebrating the occasion of the 84th birthday of HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarinda, the Princess has graciously gave her name to the new endeavour, the Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music or PGVIM.

Following her royal vision to educate new audiences as well as developing an international standard for Thai musicians, through our Youth Orchestra, Community Choir, Education Populaire, and Audience Development, the institute aims to create platforms for students, musicians, professionals, and general audiences in order to exchange their musical experiences, make dialogues, and share their love of music together.
