Shida Yaba (1663-1740) was a haiku poet born in Fukui Prefecture. One of Bashō’s most famous Ten Disciples, he was also the editor of the poetry anthology Sumidawara (Charcoal sack, 1694).

August 2025 . The residency has just finished, heading home soon to start work on developing a couple of long format works from all the sound captures. 
These are the 3rd batch of 3 short sketches using field recordings captured around Montegiovi, Tuscany. With these little works I am experimenting freely with what can be produced from each days sounds - manipulating them and stitching them back together with the aim of producing a long format work at the end of the residency. I have done maybe 20 or so  since the beginning of August. The idea is to have them done by the end of the day (or night) then move on to something fresh the next day.
I am truly thankful for this opportunity that has been provided for me by the Salamanca Arts Centre in Tasmania and Cultivate Projects/La Baldi residency in Italy and The USA.
And of course the wonderful people of Montegiovi !

I recently took a couple soft mallets to a 1930s Deagan Vibraharp at an antique store along the St Croix River, pairing it with a field recording I made of a clock ticking its tocks and a little improvisation on a Microfreak patch. For some reason it feels connected to the initial digging I've begun into the work of George Van Tassel. 

"Though my parts would add to my divisions, my faceless cosmic clock records no time."

Then, I wonder then, what does it then record?
