Returning to Items & Things with his first solo EP for the label since October 2011ʼs “VoodooVoodoo”, label head Troy Pierce presents “Softcore”, a four track EP featuring two original productions alongside remixes of title track “Softcore” from Bristol-based producer Dubspeeka and French DJ/producer Chloé.

A pioneer of the darker side of electronic experimentation, Troy’s A-side “Softcore” is anything but: a haunting, chugging peak-time production with a music DNA consisting of twisted strands of EBM, techno, and industrial, with a hint of dub thrown in for good measure. B-side “The Dangers With Strangers” is an equally powerful effort; its depraved machine funk and distorted tales of strangers provide a visceral exploration into the depths of hedonism.

Having debuted with a release on Oliver Huntemannʼs Ideal Audio label, elusive Bristol producer Dubspeeka (perhaps more famously known as one part of British group Kosheen) delivers a stripped down yet driven interpretation of Troy’s original, reinforcing the reasons why his productions have been exciting a number of the techno elite over the past year. Chloé - a recent addition to the Items & Things Booking Agency - needs little introduction. Typically poised between genres and aesthetics, the Kill The DJ founder and ex-Pulp resident rounds off proceedings with a remix that is as atmospheric as it is club-suitable, a reflection of her unique eclecticism that couldn’t be more at home than with Items & Things.

	Astronomar's 4 track 'Mutant Club' EP (originally released in May) received big supports across the board, from all our favourite DJs. Each track a different chamber of the mind, with a unique and inventive sound. With that in mind, stems were sent to 3 of the most interesting and exciting producers in the scene and we had them go to work. Fiyah-hot Fools Gold duo gLAdiator took 'Drama', (the explosive collabo with Bot) to new levels of bass and hype with a smashing half time hybrid remix premiered by A-Trak at HARD SUMMER. Now, we make it no secret that we are massive fans of Fade To Mind producer Massacooramaan. and we were geeked at his ability to flip the playful 'Gargoile' into a percussive club weapon; this is some next level ish for the mind. Next up, frequent collaborator Sinden morphs 'HA HA HA' into a 303 whirlwind techno mastercut. Dark basements beware, this remix is no laughing matter. And finally, we offer the stem track of 'Thot Process', exclusively apart of this pack, and invite producers to give it a shot for a chance for their remix to be officially released on an upcoming Remixes compilation. 	Astronomar is no longer a teenaged turntablism prodigy, but an Astronoman. An 'Alaskan' man living in Los Angeles, he's like the Chris Hadfield of club musics, but the doctor said his tracks were just too sick to travel to the moon. That was kind of lucky. For us, not him. He now devotes his time to earthly pursuits, like DIY arts and crafts plus chick peas. Did u know he also had really long hair at one point and looooves metal? This is where we brag and tell you that Iggor from Sepultura made this muthaf*#^in cover for us! In closing Astronomar travels around the world, and releases on labels like Mad Decent, Fools Gold and Owsla too. Those facts are also cool but not as impressive as space stuff.  He once killed a bear.

"Grey Matter" is a stormer made especially for the intense peak time strobe lights of a dark sweaty club. The pulsing stabs and swelling bass in combination with the rolling hi-hats and shakers keep the energy flowing upward. 
Don't let the word grey in the title fool you, this track is more a burning red. Just like the deep ominous vocal says, "We're burning"!

On the flip side is "Substance“ and with this one, Pan-Pot showcase their vast knowledge of what tension can do on the dance floor. From beginning to end, it teases with builds that never quite go over the edge. Constantly increasing, it creates the desire for just a little more while never giving you the satisfaction of a resolution.

It's a concept that only masters can make work and when it does, it's nothing short of brilliant.

There was a moment in time, where The Bearded Man almost live happily ever after. 
While traveling through South East Asia he met a woman. This was no ordinary woman, she was the perfect woman. One that could tame and satisfy the appetite of the bearded man, while leaving him hungry for more. As it usually happens, this true love came suddenly and out of nowhere. He was nursing a Mai Tai at a local warung on the beach while in deep contemplation. He was reflecting on his nasty run in with a Titan Trigger Fish on a free dive earlier that day. He got a little to close to ‘Big Phil’ (as he is known by the local people) and his nest and nearly suffered a fatal poisonous bite. Luckily he had stuck his lucky gold toothpick in his beard earlier that day, and this was his saving grace. He ended up dropping it in the fight and was mourning his loss when she literally fell into his lap after tripping on his fins in the sand. An exotic beauty of tiny stature, and unusually large feet, she was mesmerizing. They never actually spoke a word to each other, but danced to the sound of the waves. At the exact moment that The Bearded Man fell in love, a 20ft wall of water hit them both. As the wave washed them away, she managed to grab a hold of his beard, but to no avail the strands of hair slipped out of her grasp. Later, in therapy, The Bearded Man revealed to his doctor that he blamed himself for losing her. He had been applying extra beard oil to compensate for the drying effects of the salt water which had made it lackluster. He felt that his vanity had caused him to lose her.  
His therapist, Dr. Aaron Scott was so taken by this story of love and loss that he was inspired to write ‘Let Me Dance One Last Time’. The Bearded Man never speaks of her and no longer uses beard oil.

Twin Turbo creams all over the dancefloor with the latest release from Harvard Bass. Featuring a remix by Ambivalent.

For his second release on Twin Turbo, San Diego's Harvard Bass whips the cream right out of dancers' jeans, which seems like something that should appeal to pretty much everyone, including the big-name DJs (Tiga, Brodinski, Zombie Nation) who privately chart his every move.

First, the title track walks right in and kicks you repeatedly in the toms, bringing the bass and party bleepin' that's become as cherished a part of our cultural fabric as the acoustic guitar or the air horn. With its infectious, sped-up hip-hop vocal, "Cream" could become the biggest track in the world, or something you play for friends for the first time for the next 20 years. It's not  for us to dictate the life of our artist's work, only to shove it into the waiting arms of any weirdo with five euros and a GMail account. Meanwhile, the narcotized vocal sample on "Pimps" promises listeners "everything they want in life," and delivers with the kind of clap workout they've been dreaming of since the moment of conception.

For the remix, we looked to someone to whom it seemed wise to look. With releases on M-nus and Plus 8, multiple collaborations with Alexi Delano, and remixes for the likes of Plastikman, Berlin-based American Ambivalent was, we felt, an inspired and courageous choice to take on as balls-all-over a track as "Cream." And what he delivers is perhaps the greatest marriage of German tech precision and Florida bass energy since Volume Four of the Orlando-Munich Connection comp series.

On the A-side, the Loco Dice Dub is a perfect set-builder, one of his best remixes to date. Purist Loco fans might also be happy to hear that Tiga's vocal has been 99% extracted from this version, leaving behind only the echo of disco-pop in a solid, DJ-friendly groove.
 
Kaine's mix keeps things closer to the original, emphasizing the pop punch-lines with staccato beeps and a chunky beat. Positive vibes here from a bright young UK producer.
 
Finally, space-disco maestros Emperor Machine turn in another epic roller complete with a brilliant analog synth jam finale.
 
Great job!

The world we live in, on a very fundamental level, is flawed.  On the eve of my tenth album release I'm still writing my own bio and wondering if I should refer to myself in third person, analyze the past 15 years and justify bad career moves as artistic integrity, and promote myself as the unsung hero of techno and house; a mere victim of poorly timed strokes of genius (numerous!) and being born in the wrong part of the world.  Well, sarcasm never really did become me, and irony works only if unnoticed. Double fail.  It's easy enough to google up some old Jori Hulkkonen bio with real biographical info, or check out my discography from my website so I'll spare you the boring details of my "career".  Ever since the late 80's when my obsession with all things music started to manifest itself with an increasingly verstaile record collection and eventually some synths and experiments in songwriting, it has been quite clear to me that I'm destined to create my life's work within the business. The problem is that as an idealist cynic with tight grip on realism I'm well aware that 'the biz' is a sinking ship more or less, and I'm already dancerously close to the waterline. But the good news is that I stopped caring.
Here's why:
Having released my first proper artist album in 1996 for the French label F communications (defunct now since 2008, with my album "Errare Machinale Est" as their final release -coincidence?), I've managed to do something I never thought would be possible, something that I'm the most proud of all things in my career: never becoming popular.  After nine albums, dozens of pseudonym releases on superhot labels (like Rekids and Get Physical just to mention a couple from the past few years), close to a hundred remixes, my own radioshow on national radio for more than a decade (in Finland though, so it may not count), thousands of DJ gigs all over the world under my belt (OK I never actually counted but a quick calculation tells me it must be close to 2000 now), producing and writing songs for the likes of Tiga (whom I created in the first place), and having a reputation as a producer who can make an 808 kickdrum sound like a jazzy flute, you'd expect that there was a time when I was The Shit. But I never was!  Sure enough there's a lot people who never were "big", but are they still working? Releasing albums, singles, getting remix requests and DJing all over after 15 years? No. But I am. And this I see as my greatest achievement and there's a lesson to be learned everyone: If you never become trendy it's impossible for you to become untrendy.  Will all this change now though with my hotter than hot new album on Turbo, or the buzz around my Acid Symphony Orchestra (a piece I wrote for ten tb-303's and a 707, conducted by me)? Or the rumoured collaboration with Chris Lowe of the Pet Shop Boys?
It remains to be seen but I'm dedicated to give my best shot to not let it happen.
Man From Earth, my tenth studio album, is the first "Jori Hulkkonen" album not released on the now defunct F communications.
How will this change of label affect my sound? Is this the end of ballads, jazz and ambient? Of course not -not even for me - but the album is a deliberate (as in not forced) departure from the bedroom vibes with focus on jams for the dance crowds.
Recorded at my alppIVhouz studios, most of the tracks were intended for 12" singles so they are not album tracks as such, therefore the album is maybe not as coherent and subtle as some of my previous efforts. But what it may lack in atmospheric synthpads, "scandinavian mooddesign" and social commentary it makes up in catchy basslines, sizzling hihats and semi-danceable tracks.

Come on, be honest. You also have been waiting for this. For more than seven years now, the 27-year-old Frankfurter Chris Tietjen stands, like hardly any other DJ, with his Cocoon mix compilations for the sound of this label. Apart from Sven Väth, maybe...
So, it was really time for Tietjen to carve his music-aesthetical biases finally into vinyl, because for the value-oriented and highly dedicated DJ, it's a matter of honour to release his tracks in the traditional EP format only. The three tracks on the "341 EP" are not least a deep bow before three of the most important protagonists of the Rhein Main House scene. "Active", which was composed together with Cécille producer Markus Fix celebrates a deepness that is on the one hand accented by LFO bass lines and a jazzy-sketchy lightness, but on the other hand still pushes forward at a max. With Frank Heinrich aka Reboot, Tietjen had already cooperated in 2008 for the Cocoon Ibiza pre-season mix CD "Disco Invaders". With its flute melody lines, their co-production "Just Happens" presents itself even slightly more organic, before Tietjen sits down in front of the TV with none other than Ricardo Villalobos. All jokes aside, "TV Watching" combines the suggestive effect of Villalobos' unmatched sense for broken rhythmic textures with Tietjen's very precisely thumping bass dub, and reminds in his hypnotic impact almost of Villalobos' masterpiece from 1999, "808 The Bassqueen". Then, the two release you to the beach with a wistful guitar – it's summer in the city!
