PREMIERE - Flora FM - Half A Grove

After turning heads with this debut EP for our own naivety sublabel, Hassan Abou Alam is back and more than ready to cement his rep as Cairo’s foremost breakbeat master. This Egyptian lover of all things choppy and rave-y cooks up another epic sonic assault on the ears and subwoofers, designing a crafty and detailed 5-tracker that will not only rattle but stun.

A focused but playful energy runs throughout the entirety of the record, initiating things with the fat beats and the bleep-y bassline of “It Spills”, building towards the X-files atmosphere of ‘Unkindled’ and carrying the vibe on to the B-side for three more cuts of subby, tranced-out alien funk. B-side tracks “Breathe” and “Khamassen” bring on a deeper blend of complex funk patterns, elastic bass and mysterious samples while still moving the dance in the most superlative of ways. Finally, bringing things to sweet culmination, the more rugged and raw beats of final track  “All Used Up” ride along expansive, wide-eyed melodies, resonant acid and a pinch of late 90s surfer-traveller optimism.

Taking the reins for Tread's debut release is the unique Guava, whose previous releases on labels such as R&S and Holding Hands have made him one of the big names to watch in the left-field electronic world. Collaborating on the release are two of London’s finest session guitarists, Alex Blake and Leo Abrahams. Their impressive CVs include work with artists such as Jon Hopkins and Skepta, respectively.

Things open up with ‘In Cloud’, a blissed-out slab of broken techno, spaced out with guitar riffs played by Blake. Both ‘Libelle’ and ‘Equinox Meaning’ continue on this theme with a cut of bass weight, with more silky guitar performed by Abrahams on the latter. Dublin-based Sputnik One is on remix duties, turning ‘Libelle’ into a beefed-up club weapon fit for any sound system.

Bex made her production debut towards the end of last year, with Mantissa 002 continuing to showcase her emotions-led style - creating worlds and melodies to get lost into. With residencies on Noods and 1020 Radio, Bex also runs the Women’s Producer Group and has gigs coming up with Tim Reaper, Bluetoof, Luka Una and more. 

Marking the second release on Mantissa’s label arm, the release also includes a remix from ‘Unknown Artist’ on the final track.

With a strong discography from the likes of Workshop, Third Ear and Lobster Theremin, Luke Palmer aka Ozel AB has been turning heads in the realms of leftfield house and techno since 2014. Now putting out the first offering on his own self-titled label in May we are delighted to premiere one of these four new tracks from the man himself. Series Parallel is 5mins and 25 seconds of raw bleep styled techno that brings you back to a 90's warehouse with a fitting subtle cut up vocal throughout and an addictive bassline to match. Her mind was neither here nor there today; everything had become a big mush of half-finished tasks, immediate deadlines and last minute responsibilities. Trying to put them into some kind of decipherable order was a task in itself, one that would require an amount of focus and concentration that she couldn't muster up at this precise moment. For now, her thoughts would have to remain a tangled web, a scramble of words and memories all chucked in the blender and jumbled beyond recognition. 

Hot on the heels of a release from label boss Furious Frank, Adelaide-based label Mind Dance call on the skills of a veteran of the Australian electronic music scene, Andy Rantzen. Active since the early 90s, both solo and as part of the duo Itch-E and Scratch-E alongside Paul Mac, the Sydney hailing producer follows releases for the likes of 4-4-2 Music, Efficient Space and Ken Oath with Return To The Source, a seven-track album of recordings made between 1997 and 2020. Crafted using his hardware set up, the music is raw, stripped back, deep and percussive, touching on machine funk, electro and house.
