Before DFA was really a thing, James asked Marcus Shit Robot to record some of his favorite techno tracks for Juan MacLean, who was still finding his way out of the nineties indie morass. In lieu of a compilation or traditional mix tape, Marcus woke up one morning, turned on the MiniDisc (!) recorder, and just started mixing records in his Ludlow St. living room. What was meant to be a casual and ruff mix for friends of course became a formative early DFA text for those that had it.

“Cold Skool 4 Juan” was burned to two CD-Rs from the original MiniDisc. Juan’s was lost some time later, but we managed to find the other hiding in plain sight in a Case Logic booklet amongst a bunch of other important things. (It was a time.)

On the eve of another special James and Marcus B2B set at Good Room, what better time than now to run this back.

The multi format label run by Filippo MSM (of Metropolitan Soul Museum) is back with its 7th release overall, this time on wax. This new collection continues to show Filippo’s predilection for music with non straight forward drum patterns and moody melodies.

Volume Three is a well thought mix of styles, spanning to and from two Trance oriented tracks from Rambal Cochet and The Mesmerist through the broken techno of Doc Sleep, Jack Bags’s all analogue Acid House track, The Jaffa Kid’s uncompromising Drexcian’s Electro and Undsidedly dreamy’s own take on the genre.

You notice a pair of “weary” sneakers abandoned on the street near a trash bin. For some reason, your mind begins to wander, imagining the countless steps taken in them — through the streets of familiar and unfamiliar cities, all in an attempt to outpace bad thoughts. Sometimes it worked, and sometimes it didn’t. You picture them on a bright summer day, riding in a commuter train as the view outside shifted from dachas to forests and back to dachas again. You imagine them stepping into strangers’ apartments, left in hallways for a few hours, or sometimes until dawn. You see them standing by a bar, waiting for another glass of beer, the lively chatter of beautiful people filling the air. And finally, you think of how they occasionally tapped in rhythm to a pleasant tune — on a subway car, in an elevator, at a supermarket checkout, or even by the office water cooler. BIO:
Active in the Lisbon scene since the early 2000s, Photonz is a local mainstay whose work spans community projects like Rádio Quântica, mina and Planeta Manas, as well as a myriad solo releases and many hours behind the DJ booth, both locally and internationally.
His off-kilter yet dancefloor-ready music has resonated widely, with key releases on Unknown To The Unknown, Crème Organization, naive and a 2019 LP on San Francisco’s legendary Dark Entries.
Photonz has been touring far and wide, bringing his own genre-mangling sensibility and murky bangers. His sets can easily move between raw house & techno tracks to heads-down subwoofer rattlers - from bruk to dubstep and jungle - and euphoric, serotonin-depleting emo rave.
