I got the opportunity to officially remix this classic song to coincide with the release of a new Donny Hathaway box set. I was given the original multitrack master of the studio version (different from the live version)and it consisted of 8 different instrument and vocal tracks (as opposed to the more usual 24 tracks) 
When I take on a remix, my first goal is to make it work on a current dance floor. I like to stay very close to the originally recorded sound and In most case there's plenty to be reworked on the multitrack master to achieve this. 
This case proved a little different as there were few rhythm elements I could use to fit within current standards of club loudness levels. So I decided to take a slightly different approach, and add a new set of (acoustic) drums,  to bend the original Soul vibe a little towards Disco territory.

We're not 100% what a session victim is here at DJ Mag Towers but we're pretty sure we've been one at some point.

As for the Berlin duo known as Session Victim, we know exactly who they are. Their names are Hauke Freer and Matthias Relling, they live in Berlin and are just about to release an obscenely classy follow up to 2012's excellent debut LP 'The Haunted House of House' on which their deep sample-based disco/house reaches a whole new level of gorgeousness.

They're also on board for DJ Mag Sessions at Egg LDN on Saturday 22nd November alongside DJ W!LD, Ejeca and Glimpse so they dropped us a 30-min mix featuring Leon Vynehall, Francis Inferno Orchestra and their own little soulful wonder 'Stick Together'...

HB015: Javi Frias - Shining Bright EP w/ Labor of Love dub

Javi Frias is rapidly turning into one of Europe's most consistently on-point re-editors. Equally as inspired by funk, soul, disco, boogie and house, the Madrid-based producer has previously released on Street Edits, Giant Cuts, Editorial and Midnight Riot. Here he pops up on Hotbox Boogie with more floor-friendly reworks of overlooked or obscure boogie, street soul and disco-funk gems. While largely re-tooled to suit house dancefloors, Frias' edits pay due reverence to the source material, with cuts such as "Shining Bright" and the superbly soulful "The One" emphasizing the original tracks' killer grooves. Picking a standout track is tough given the high quality threshold throughout, but we're particularly enjoying the heavy, extra-percussive Dub of hands-aloft disco-boogie gem "The Way".
