Disquiet Junto Project 0599: Minimal(ist) Blend
The Assignment: Make a piece of music that combines self-contained minimalist parts.

I started with four self-contained ambient drone tracks, all created with granular synthesis. Then I wanted to mix them with different granular tools, but they lost their character and I didn't like the result. Then I wanted to mix them so that each of the four tracks overlapped once with every other track (about 50%), both front and back. I thought this would be clever because it would be the opposite of the Musifestival Berns theme of "√" overlapping 4x4 tracks (^2!), but you only seem to need 12 to overlap all the tracks together … Anyway: the crossfades are simple in-out mixes, and as a result of my efforts, you'll hear each of the four tracks (mostly) just as they crossfade with another. The result is 30 minutes long, sorry for that, but I liked this version so much more than all the others. - Is it 'minimal'? I doubt it, but I had fun.

great prompt to continue one of my musical quests, beautiful ambient music made with real instruments in the spirit that Brian Eno meant it, and Erik Satie and Mark Hollis achieved it. (or at least not what it became later with excessive digital reverb or overtly digital synthetic tones or the beat/glitch driven music that it became, which is fine, that deserves to exist too:) but not where i usually want to go.  
5 guitar passages w/ minimal processing were recorded into ableton. further movement of the parts in editing, with the focus to keep it spare, hopeful, & open, not too much action or overlap. further processing was minimal, just a bit of convolution reverb and echo in abelton. as suggested granular synthesis was used by dropping one of the guitar parts into Robert Henke's excellent max4live device Granulator II. in addition one guitar part was processed intermittently with Tone Tree max4live device from Inspired by Nature/Dillon Bastan. these parts are also kept at minimal use throughout never overpowering the natural guitar parts, only complementing and extending them. 

another welcome assignment this week, initially i was tempted to go the glass/reich minimalist approach as I am playing a lot of piano in this style recently, but my ability to play the parts live without manipulating or editing them to fit is not there yet and i preferred to go the ambient guitar route as it so close to my heart for many years, and achievable for me without too much "correction" in the editing.
I'm fine with using any means necessary to achieve the goal but more of that kind of minimalism from me when i can pull it off in one take god help me...

Disquiet Junto Project 0599: Minimal(ist) Blend
The Assignment: Make a piece of music that combines self-contained minimalist parts.

This project is the second of three that are being done in collaboration with the 2023 Musikfestival Bern, which will be held in Switzerland from September 6 through 10. The topic this year is « √ » — as the organization explains: “the radical, or square root symbol and the power of its symbolism are central to the festival and these will be translated into music in multifarious ways.” All three projects will engage with the work of Éliane Radigue, who is the Composer-in-Residence for the 2023 festival.

We are working at the invitation of Tobias Reber, an early Junto participant, who is in charge of the educational activities of the festival. This is the fifth year in a row that the Junto has collaborated with Musikfestival Bern.

Select recordings resulting from these three Disquiet Junto projects may be played and displayed throughout the festival. Anyone who’s interested in having their work included in the event should set their download option to “on.”

Step 1: You’re going to record a piece of music with between four and seven self-contained parts that get combined in various ways as the piece progresses. These parts should be minimalist. Drones would work well. Record a selection of such parts.

Step 2: Mix the parts recorded during Step 1 into a single work. When doing so, explore how different combinations achieve different ends, and how you handle transitions. (Also: consider lightly transforming the material by utilizing granular synthesis.)

Eight Important Steps When Your Track Is Done:

Step 1: Include “disquiet0599” (no spaces or quotation marks) in the name of your tracks.

Step 2: If your audio-hosting platform allows for tags, be sure to also include the project tag “disquiet0599” (no spaces or quotation marks). If you’re posting on SoundCloud in particular, this is essential to subsequent location of tracks for the creation of a project playlist.

Step 3: Upload your tracks. It is helpful but not essential that you use SoundCloud to host your tracks.

Step 4: Post your track in the following discussion thread at llllllll.co:

Step 5: Annotate your track with a brief explanation of your approach and process.

Making use of two files from Marcus Fischer: 600_nacre_voit-mfischer.wav (which begins and ends the track) and 600_PSU_stairs-mfischer.wav. Each was used with the max/msp nn~ object, with AI models of a human voice and sounds from NASA.

a great anniversary task! after hearing the tracks by the wonderful marcus fischer, i immediately thought of a kind of duet!
arranged four of the tracks and then played baritone guitar once!

Very nice samples to work with.
I unmuted the first 3 (or the last 3?) the more "synth" ones, didn't use the glitchy/noise tracks. Those 3 tracks played back with no added fx or mix sounded full Vangelis for me.
I  miss and I know I will miss Vangelis Papathanassíou for the rest of my life.
