Spellbound in Naarm.

Theory Therapy #41 is a spellbinding quiltwork of delicate folk musings and surreal soundscaping by Naarm-based producer Mitchell Reynolds aka Bluetung. 

Sonically, there’s a lot of similarities between this mix and the music Mitch has released, especially last year’s spectral Room Tone Paintings on Altered States Tapes and the kosmische-inspired Music for Our Dying Earth on jpeg. Artefacts. (If you haven’t checked these albums out already, I highly recommend you take the time to do so.) 

Like those releases, there’s an equally unadorned and intricate quality to this recording. As Mitch modestly puts it, “there are a lot of different vibes in here, my mixes are big collages or audio scrapbooks, very unceremonious”.

What sound would you listen to… if it was the only thing you could listen to 24/7?

A binaural recording of a tiger purring, taken from inside their mouth while they were sleeping.

Describe in detail your favorite place to sit & listen to music.

It’s not a specific place, but I like a sturdy wooden bench in a park-like area, early afternoon, overcast, cool but not cold, shabby, lush grass, beautiful old trees, and lots of people bustling about.

When you are in the crowd… where do you like to stand and why?

Wherever the central most a/c vent downdrafts, to balance getting a nice solid stereo image & not overheating.

Sure, a bit on the nose, but it means my tears won’t be totally sorrowful.

Favorite BPM and why?

As a dancer, the 140<->70 BPM two-speeds-at-once zone because I like options for my energy expenditure.

As a DJ, 135 BPM feels pretty nice right now, not exactly sure why though.

What would you like to see in the future for the dance community?

I’m a broken record on this, but more universal connection/activation/support off the dance floor.

This is one of my favorite tracks I've made to date! Every synth in this song lands in the perfect sweet spot of unconventional, quirky, and uniquely me and they create an uplifting atmosphere. This track is also the first that I spent a lot of time focused on crrafting the flow of the drums so that they're ever slightly shifting each measure. It keeps things a lot more interesting in a way you mostly feel, rather than hear!

The resonant chords that form the core of the song were made with Anukari, an experimental physical modeling synth.
