Many labels strive for the cutting edge, but few pull it off. Melbourne’s Music Company is only a year – or eight releases – old but is quickly establishing itself as a foremost publisher of the freshest sounds from Australia’s constellation of artists making ambient, experimental and otherwise avant-garde music.

The label’s founders Brad Shawyer and Lauren Mitchell have thus far built a discography ranging from single-instrument live recordings to the most inventive forms of ‘computer music’ you’ll hear. Presenting the lovely @sun_drine for #151, a Swiss native I came across a while back deep in a soundcloud dig - I was quickly drawn in by her mesmerising, organic narrative building & warmth filled mixes.

Co-founder of all-female collective Töchter, she grew up in the Swiss Alps & now resides in Bern.Her sets are hypnotic, surprising & introspective, a lovely reflection of her passionate approach to the craft.

The lovely French pixie @bambi-dj for #154. Based in Paris, she has a mostly show on @rinse_france & is a regular resident at both the wonderful Macadam Nantes & @@hypersoft_bln 

Her sound is textured, kaleidoscopic & unearthly - full of surprises but somehow always warm & inviting.  She has been an exciting artist to watch blossom in recent times. A. perfect fit for the Animix series.

For Episode Sixteen we host a guest transmission from favourite new local label Music Company. Their debut release, Grace Ferguson's 'Voler', quickly became a COVID classic - an introspective and sensuous collection of piano compositions that stay with you long after the final note is played. Their second release ‘Vector Fields’ collects 17 Australian musicians. It’s a breathtaking experience from start to finish - a rare accomplishment for a compilation of its length. Thank you Lauren and Bradley for sharing your musical world. 

In their own words: 
“We started the Music Company label with the idea of showing people music for all three spaces in their life, the home, the not-home and the internet. Ambiguous maybe, but we feel there is a slither of sound that is suitable for all three environments, and that small gap between the real and unreal is where we've found a home. 

This mix was recorded in a similar space, between the real and unreal and in a home that is not ours. We are currently in South Australia and have been for a few months in hope of some pandemic reprieve and much needed family time, but we've ended up here much longer than we anticipated. Creating a new home, for now. 

This is a mix for the days that pass without warning, perpetuous in their monotony. An ode to time, and the times, full of warmth but rife with distance. Familiar and weird.”

The Best Effort Show - Episode Sixteen (Music Company)

Theory Therapy was live for with @theory-therapy for their first show of 2021. They brought a  bag of soothing electronica, woozy ambience and leftfield synthesis from Yunzero, ju ca, Susumu Yokota and new Music from Memory. In the second hour, they're joined by  Melbourne based record label Music Company heads Lauren and Bradley.

Although brand new to the scene, Music Company have already established a spectacular presence in the Melbourne music community. The all-star cast behind the scenes (Bradley Shawyer and Lauren Mitchell) take a broad-brush approach to beautiful music, with particular focus on unearthing lesser-known local acts, many of whose creative gifts deserve to be household names. Take their debut release, ‘Voler’ by Grace Ferguson, a stunning piece of modern classical. Dynamic piano balanced with perfectly placed electronic ambience - beautiful, expansive.
