October 2013 will see the reissue of 26-year old American composer Peter Broderick's 2008 debut album Float. Returning to his home in Oregon, where his musical journey began, Peter completes the circle with the release of Float 2013. Remastered by the gifted hands of Nils Frahm, Float 2013 will also include two additional bonus tracks with each album download and will be reissued on CD, vinyl, digital and even on a limited edition cassette via Erased Tapes. The album release will also be accompanied by Float 2013 Addendum, a 7” single featuring ‘Something Has Changed’ re-arranged as a duet for violin and viola, with the new title ‘Something Has Remained’.

Brought up in a musical household in Oregon, Peter quickly became a popular session musician for the likes of M. Ward in the Portland area. Later discovered by the Danish band Efterklang he joined their live band and spent the next six years based in Europe where he collaborated with many like-minded contemporaries. Through relentless touring, multiple album recordings and film scores Peter has established himself as a solo artist, known for his innate gift as a musical medium to picking up any instrument, turning his musings into poignant songs.

Having previously released ‘Ten Duets‘ on cassette tape, Peter is a big fan of this format and is excited to be taking part in Cassette Store Day on September 7th 2013. Float 2013 will be available in store in a hand numbered limited edition of purple cassettes in bespoke packaging. ’A dialogue was started with Robert, about the idea of one day giving Float a second chance. And a bit later I found myself in the studio of my dear friend Nils, remastering these songs which on one hand felt so far away, but on the other felt right at the core of my musical heart, the foundation of my aspirations as a musician. And what Nils did to the sound, how he worked his magic as he always does, filled me with the conviction that this project had not previously reached its potential. In so many ways I've found myself coming around the circle, back to the place I started, only perhaps the circle itself has moved. But the dream is the same. Korrupt Data is more than a mere musical moniker, pseudonym or alias. Korrput Data is a belief system, musical revolution and a commentary on our very existence all rolled into one. The question you should be asking is not “who is Korrupt Data”, but rather “what is Korrupt Data?”

Let us explain. The nature of reality is constantly shifting. On a physical level, everything is made up of nothing – tiny particles of energy, drifting through time and space, grouping together to create inanimate objects and physical, sentient beings. We are all just particles, stumbling our way through the universe together while trying to make sense of a gushing tide of information, or data, surging towards us from all angles.

Energy is just data in the form of matter. Data, of course, swamps our lives. It flows freely from the media we surround ourselves with, courses through the submarine cables connecting communications systems on different continents, and floats through the gases that make up the air all around us. Data manifests itself in a myriad of contrasting ways, from relentless lines of ones and zeroes, to electromagnetic waves of and pulses of pure, white, bright light, blinking faster than the human eye can see.

Yet data is not all pure and innocent. It can be corrupted, twisted into unflattering and unreadable forms before, during or after transmission. There is as much corrupt data in the universe than clean data. Once you realize this, you will start to question everything: the information drip-fed to us by mass media, what you’re seeing with your own eyes, even the words that drift from your lips first thing in the morning.

This is the world in which Korrupt Data inhabits. He, she or it makes music that tests our faith in philosophy, science and data itself. Think surging machine rhythms, intoxicating electronic melodies and otherworldly soundscapes inspired by the netherworld of corrupted data: dystopian fantasies painted in sound, broadcast from the ether. Analogue anti matter for the digital generation.

This is Korrupt Data, a musician operating in the spaces between known facts and human beliefs, feeding off the universe’s many malfunctions. The music may thrill and inspire in equal measure, but it also challenges our understanding of the world around us. 

Succumb to the groove and prepare to be Korrupted.

Danny Wolfers (most frequently known as Legowelt) is a producer and performer who has worn many hats, all of them styled with finesse. His range is immense but never disparate; through releases for Clone, L.I.E.S., Creme Organization and Peoples Potential Unlimited (among others) Legowelt has spanned everything from frosty techno, sprawling boogie and melodic acid house to chugging electro without sacrificing bonafide quality or pandering to the fad du jour. In his newest effort, a debut EP for Fotomachine’s Technicolour imprint entitled Anaconda Flow, listeners are treated to that dynamism in its very finest form. Uplifting, dreamy synth sequences are incorporated alongside his instantly recognizable gritty floor-fillers for a four-piece package that will both delight the home listener and devastate the dance. His long-demonstrated devotion to hardware is utilized here to extraordinary effect: blips bubble to a murky surface, twinkles cascade from above and a kick drum pulses straight through everything it touches—all in all a darkly immersive little jewel, though who would have expected any less?

Juan Atkins and Moritz von Oswald – the two indispensable protagonists of the Electric Garden – plug back into the wilderness. Transport – the new full length effort of the Borderland collaborative project – brings together a new set of studio-refined sequences aimed at colonizing some of the dark energy that pulsates through those areas that are thoroughly electrified, even if not ‘on the grid’. ‘Riod’ is the first streak to bolt through.

The Detroit-Berlin axis triangulates to a third point which, like the atomic particle that lives in two places at once, flickers between a form of techno-charged ambience and a futuristic club-jazz which cannot be broken down into constitutive parts. Borderland remains caught in a state of enraptured stillness, invisibly moving between every
imagined future for electronic sound making. The result: a font from which springs serene and exhilarating musical ideas that vibrate with refined energy for sixty seconds in every minute.

Transport will release on CD / 2LP, on April 22nd.

For their final release of 2018, Planet E present DJ Deep & Traumer's remixes of Klauss & Craig, the collaboration between Argentinian synth ensemble Klauss and Carl Craig, which debuted with the ‘Momentum’ EP earlier in the year.
 
Out November 30th, the three-track remix EP’s origins were as a pair of spec mixes by DJ Deep (Cyril Etienne) and his regular collaborator Roman Poncet aka Traumer.  The duo found inspiration from the original Klauss & Craig EP that led to spontaneous experiments on their own remixes.  

Soon a trio of versions emerged, with two by the duo together, and an additional solo mix by Poncet under his Traumer alias. Etienne sent their work to Craig, who immediately decided to give them their own release on Planet E, in turn helping Etienne achieve one of his own dreams to release on the legendary Detroit label.

Weaving intricate percussive themes with analogue melodies they deliver two takes on ‘Repeat After Me’  - ‘Free Your Mind’ and ‘Free Your Soul’ - before Traumer, inspired by the process,  goes on his own for the final track ‘Repeat After Me - Reduced Mind’, creating undulating bass loops which glide under warm pads.

This time last year, Life And Death – the dream team comprised of modern house heroes Tale Of Us and Thugfucker – released a dual weapon of stealth killer club tracks ‘Step Aside’. Now given the royal remix treatment by super producers Carl Craig and Jamie Jones plus Rework flexing their minimal funk, the EP gets a whole new lease of life.

First up, Carl Craig, a true forefather of Detroit and Planet E boss, enters the Visionquest repertoire with a heavy duty ‘Morgana’ remix. Staying faithful to the dark and hallucinogenic journey of the original with its stormy twists and turns, Carl delivers the perfect stomping gear, pitching things up and pairing the growling disengaged synth line with driving hi-hats for a more jacked up groove. An explosive storm is just about contained in the tension, letting off shoots of steam in all the right places.

On the flip, the inimitable Jamie Jones takes the reigns for the first remix of ‘Step Aside’, lifting the track from its deep and dubby expanse into to a backdrop of bleep filled space funk, injecting the bassline with his infectious dancefloor appeal and playing with the melody of the bubbling synth line. Another first appearance on the Visionquest imprint but a long time friend of the group, Jamie Jones is without doubt one of the most in-demand talents in the industry and currently making ripples outside the realms of dance music with Hot Natured.

Closing the package, German-French trio and Playhouse favourites Rework, deliver a remix of ‘Step Aside’ in their own alternative stripped back style, underpinning Scott McCloud’s chopped up vocal with deep old school chords and combining them with fresh female vox courtesy of band member Sacha Hedgehog. Also made up of Daniel Varga and Michael Kübler, Rework are specialists in edgy, minimal funk and ooze new-wave sex appeal. Recent EPs have been dropping on Meant Records and Items & Things.

Greatest Bits Mixtape

• BIOSFERA is the first full-length conceptual album from Oscar Mulero • now available from Detroit Underground.

After twenty years on the road as international ambassador of electronic music BIOSFERA marks a return home for Muleros. BIOSFERA is comprised of seven experimental soundscape compositions each inspired by a different Autonomous Community in the Principality of Asturias — the mythical, semi-mountainous region on Spain’s north-west coast. The result is an exceptionally rich aural tapestry of lush spatial environments from one of the world’s foremost sound designers.

In Cabo Pe Muleros reconstructs through music massive white limestone chunks of Iberian peninsula emerging from the Atlantic like the spine of some ancient creature. Muleros breathes life into this ancient creature making BIOSPHERA a vehicle for us to ride upon together and generate new collective assemblage of enunciation to contest ‘austerity.’ In travelling to Asturias via sound we too defy the speed and extent to which living standards are getting worse in Spain and elsewhere.

The haunting yet uplifting track Oscos leads us simultaneously backwards and forwards in time via repositioning voice samples of an American confessing to his involvement building a secret biological weapons facility at the Los Alamos jet propulsion/nuclear bomb lab. Resituated in the context of Asturian resistance to military invasion Oscos suggests we can draw from history the power and knowledge to effectively combat emerging practices of aerial bombardment e.g. Obama’s drone warfare. Asturians, like many now under threat of drone strikes, were the first to experience aerial carpet bombing in the early-1930s, such was the fascist response to their refusal to acquiesce independence. Oscos enables us to draw parallels across disparate events of history; President Obama, like Franco before him, declares himself to be above the rule of law, when murdering others including US citizens. One of the great accomplishments of BIOSPHERA is that it refuses to allow acoustic ecology and soundscape production to be non-political.

Layers of lushly ethereal, super-chilled sound rush through Pría establishing an entirely new score with which to contemplate the results of anarcho-syndicalism leading to autonomous communities. Judging from the music one of the accomplishments of communities like Pría is that part of their ‘anarchism’ is just how pleasant and amenable they are to live in! We can only but presume that this place is profoundly tranquil, where one might reside with others, with nature and with oneself harmoniously — a track of great sustenance for those of us living in cities using sound as a means to cope with various forms of dissonance and cacophony.

Cova Rosa is an idyllic track constructed like a terraced hamlet etched into rugged hills. There is a profound sense of health and healing in these tracks. Awareness of Asturian healing and reconciliation powers goes back at least as far as Cervantes’ Don Quixote, first published in 1604. In what is now considered the greatest book of all time (as voted by the Nobel Institute) it is Maritornes ‘the Asturian woman’ who nurses Don Quixote and Sancho Panza back to health after a severe beating.

Perhaps more than any other track Ibias spans resistance, restoration and reconcilition. Muleros’ accomplishment is to produce contemporary electronic music as worthy complement to great works of literature particularly Cervantes’ Don Quixote. Through listening it appears that what Asturias has to offer the world is, like Don Quixote, invaluable. Amid the lush, chilled-out easy going vibe is contemporary experimental soundscape composition that is trenchantly political — this music is very much a critique and partial antidote to the neo-liberal demolition of civil society.

Valledor (available on digital release only) affirms the fashioning of active, participative community as a bold adventure, as a means of engagement with romance and tragedy so as to change the world. Taken as a whole the seven communities and their soundscapes emerge as anarcho-syndicalist warriors, equivalent to Kurosawa’s The Seven Samurai, Aeschylus’ Seven Against Thebes and other great works of art where the magical number ‘seven’ creates unconquerable relations of power/knowledge.

We believe BIOSPHERA is necessary because it draws upon arts of listening developed by Mulero in Asturias. wherein he listened to a unique people and the sounds of their environment. These people, the Asturians, achieved their autonomous communities as a consequence of their unique practices of listening to one another and their environment. As Pauline Oliveros says, “The way a community listens is the way it evolves.”
