The 16th Amulet is a plot full of twists and turns, a mystery unraveling; brief flashes of digital artefacts seems to appear in the landscape that it leads through. Is it real at all? The story is best experienced unspoiled. Concrete Fantasies is a producer from Madrid; his album 'Which Angel Gave Us Their Wings' was released on @audiovisualsatmosphere in June of 2021. The project explores 'elemental electronics', poetic impressions, and visions of the future, unafraid of wandering into unexplored territory.

The Awakening

London born and based DJ, Producer, PAN and PTP affiliate Flora Yin-Wong jumps in for episode 8 with "Flower over the Stone" a 30 minute sound collage loosely based around the idea of dreams and Akira Kurosawa’s '夢 Yume'.

Flora draws together samples, field recordings, re-pitched vocals and various electro-acoustic sounds to move through several vignettes and themes that the film addresses: Universal disasters, death, spirituality, childhood, art, and man's mistakes regarding the world. 

"Flower over the Stone" combines beat driven experimental, liturgic ambient and fourth world, scratchy samples and auto-tuned R&B style vox highlights to make for a diverse, filmic soundscape.

Portuguese composer Afonso Ferreira a.k.a. FARWARMTH is a keen collaborator, as part of the duos HRNS, PURGA and the collective 00:NEKYIA. His debut album for Planet Mu is perhaps his most ambitious collaborative work yet. Built up over four years, its sources are recordings of friends and family in improvised sessions with cello, flute and accordion with Afonso on keyboards from the time he was on an artists residency in 2018.

Afonso's music is made by carefully processing and rendering his source material and he talks about the compositions in terms of emotional resonance, the construction of “connections between time, people and sound“ and the sessions which make up this album being about “emotional exchange, that gave away to something I did not imagine I could've reached alone.“ He describes the album as “rooted in the earth, but aiming for the heavens in an endless search to breathe enough air.” The music here can seem alien; recognisable sounds turned unrecognisable, channeling raw emotion by building layers of sound in unusual ways into huge, energetic sculptures.

The album opens with shard-like chords and twinkling melodies as if the sound is being coaxed into life. The track titles also suggest an almost uncanny onset starting with ‘Shadows In The Air', moving on to the open blasts of chords in ‘Below The White Sky’, and the strange intermittent static of  'Across The Black Sand'. These titles all refer to Afonso’s experience of being alone on the beach where he lives, making sense of the endless winters. It's not until 'Into The Grey Sea' that the bare instruments reveal themselves, freely weaving over each other in a strange dark tapestry, shot through with shimmering sounds that seem to come from distant shores. 'To Heft The Weight Of Memory' lands somewhere between the mystical sadness of Arvo Pärt and the fragmented beauty of Fennesz. 'Sunlight Mirroring' feels blissful; flutes fly out over cold crashing waves. The album finishes with the flickering static of ‘Shadows Through Time’ which gives way to a rich cello fleshing out the wall of noise, as crunchy distortion melts away into silence.

Hidden in plain sight, grinning through worry, living in insecurity – modern society has returned to a day-by-day race for survival. To be vulnerable is the new normal; afraid, a bare minimum. Something was bound to emerge from the quiet throngs of the new precariat, and Racine is such a voice, setting to music those modern lives defined by uncertainty.

Quelque Chose Tombe (‘Something Falls’) is a set of compositions that confronts demons both inner and outer head-on. Created during a period of necessary unemployment somewhere in Montreal – caring for one’s health can take precedence over work – the music is both a grotesque dance of the goblins and the gentle opiatic breath of the protectors. It’s a harrowing reflection of the prevalent vampiric hypochondria forcing a generation into fatigue.

The sounds crawling out of Racine speak with their own internal logic. Snippets of fractured tunes creak through perturbed post-digital soundscapes, blurred and fragmented along the way into haunting amorphous instrumentals. The two-part title track is multi-part sonic maze where raven-like pitch bent notes gather, a broken rave theme punctures its way through bass fog, and silence clefts the music in two, ushering in a coda of heartbroken ambience. As the album’s suite progresses, Racine shepherds mutant melodic themes in and out of earshot, like clear thoughts bringing temporary order to a state of emotional panic and withdrawal. A host of other sounds too – voices and birdsong, cybernetically deformed – populate Racine’s scarred productions.

Emerging from Quelque Chose Tombe’s constant darkness however, is a latent sense of hope. Racine is turning modern vulnerability into a strength, creating a singular aesthetic to reflect and confront an uncomfortable present.

pol100 ‘Sepsis EP'

pol100 is an alias used by Italian producer Paolo Maiarelli. Maiarelli is originally from Ferrara, a small city located in the north of Italy. Inspired by the likes of Arca, Rabit and Lee Gamble among others, it has been four years since he started to create music under the pol100 moniker. During this period he developed, what he calls, a more personal sound that can be heard on his previous releases ‘ANOTHER FINE DAY’ and ‘PLAGUE EP’ released on respectively Elastica Records and Du Couer Records. His latest work ‘Sepsis EP’ will be released on Bound Centre and introduces us to a new chapter in Maiarelli’s work. The complex mix between Ambient-like audio engineering and break/bass heavy electronica is conceived from his research into the idea of sound over structure and is based on the four symptoms of septic shock. On basis of these four symptoms Maiarelli created a listening experience that transcends conventional forms of arrangement and sound design and forces the listener to take a deep dive into the concept and physical consequences of the disease.
