For Amsterdam DJ Afra, wax is the medium of choice. Her weekly routine will often entail casting her eponymous jewellery pieces (Afra Amba), with weekends spent spinning vinyls at Spielraum, Herrensauna, and Säule. Her start in music came early, listening to Miss Kittin, tweaking frequencies on her dad’s home-studio equipment and buying her first decks at 16, followed a brief two years later by her enthusiastic DJ debut. Citing a need to develop before starting to play, she focused on the former craft and came back to DJing once she’d found her voice. And found it she now has. With a soft-spot for noughties electro and the wobbling sounds of the Dutch West Coast, her gritty sets and output on co-run label Mindri are the stuff apocalyptic dreams are made of. This Bassiani Podcast instalment is sinister, rough and unflinching, Afra’s voice become automaton roar.
