After dropping several tracks and performing at select festivals throughout the years, Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen dedicated the year 2014 to explore the area in-between Ólafur’s more acoustic, piano-based solo work and Janus’s synth-heavy electro pop, with their collaborative electronic project Kiasmos.

By focusing solely on their self-titled debut album, Ólafur and Janus have been able to combine and further develop their unique sound aesthetics to complete an album driven by their mutual love for electronic music. Made in Ólafur’s newly build studio in Reykjavík, Iceland, a majority of the album was recorded using acoustic instruments next to a variety of synthesisers, drum machines and tape delays. It features a live drummer, string quartet and Ólafur performing on the grand piano, producing an ambient, textured sound, which makes it a perfect home listen and equally danceable record. If you listen closely, you can spot them record the thumb piano, finger snapping and even the sound of the metal grinder of a lighter slowly to replace the usual electronic hi-hat sounds, giving the album a far more intimate and unique atmosphere.

“We decided to start almost completely over with this record, so most of the material is written this year with the idea of making a record that can stand as one piece rather than a collection of songs. I am very excited to get a proper record out exploring a different territory than I am used to. I touch a lot on electronic genres in my own music but never have the opportunity to go full out electronic like we do here.” – Ólafur Arnalds

Meda Fury welcome OL from Moscow, Russia. Following many varied contributions for labels such as Faces, Fine Grains, Phonica and Capital Bass. 
Lum Edit barges in sirens blaring, banging out machine like kick, hats and toms. The heaviest raw funk bassline is unleashed, and lumbers amongst Rap TV show samples and gunshots. Industrial gangster house. 
Around has a broken, jazzy Detroit feel. Sparing R&B vocal samples and afrocentric percussion ride the wah-wah and heavy bass guitar. 
Rimms comes straight out of leftfield, cutting edge drum machines rubbing up against Baltic art-rock samples. Its a strange claustrophobic affair with ghostly vocals. East European dancefloor paranoia. 
Myxa breaks the tension wide open, building a coiled spring of whistle-like riffs. R&B vocal snippets hype it up further before snapping and spilling its own elastic sub-bass. Fine feelgood ghetto-house action. 
Podumay's glitchy raw drums stomp forward towards all kinds of unknown sci-fi sounds and Kraut synth backgrounds. The contrast is a Detroit soul bassline and house percussion. 
Melt Down brings the tempo and mood way down to a mysterious close. The echoing sound of water and eerie isolationist synth washes recalling BOC. The beat is straight current-day Hip-Hop, tight snares rolling over dangerously low Miami-strength bass. Game over.

District One kick things off as Fenckler treats us to a real percussive workout from the start, quickly working in hypnotic synth elements. A real groove laden track, Fenckler lets the drums do the talking on this one as a solid tool 

With District Two, Fenckler goes to the roots and whips out classic 909 drum sounds as the basis for the flip side to the ep. Gradually working in each percussive element, the track builds quickly into a real powerhouse. 

Fenckler is quickly earning his stripes here at Soma as he builds his profile into one of our most profile artists.

Bradley Zero's swashbuckling efforts with Rhythm Section continue to induce pleasure across the office and beyond. His regular soirees at Canavans Pool Hall are typified by the type of loose, one-love community ethos that many club nights would starve for; red neon lit, set time-less and buoyed by an all-encompassing music policy. Naysayers need only check Edd Fisher this Saturday in Peckham. On top of that, the RS discography stockpile is quickly blossoming into a well-nurtured settling for talent; undeterred by genre or location, and instead driven by an unwavering feel good factor. There's already been woozy, drifting deep house from Melbourne's Prequel and the velvety hook up with Vancouver's Mood Hut rep Local Artist to digest. Just six releases in, and the air miles have definitely been totting up.

As the title suggests, RS007 resides a bit closer to home than previous entries. Good Morning Peckham is Henry Wu's (@wuesli) ode to his local area, built around his now recognised style of off-kilter, slacker house. "Dubplate Special" is a special lecture in groove; a marriage between succulent bass sways and radiant Rhodes piano that's oh so ripe for summer.

Henry Wu “Dubplate Special” - Boiler Room Debuts

The first Musik For Autobahns was a delight: softly-softly ambient and subtle cuts from the likes of Move D, Suzanne Kraft, Roman Flügel and plenty more besides. Even amongst Rush Hour's bounty that year, it stood proudly out. A ripple of excitement went through BR HQ upon finding out Gerd Janson was lining up a second, with no shortage of marquee signings all coming correct with their A game.

A number of heads come together to translate these thoughts into sound - from Fort Romeau's Drive-esque "Seleno" joyride through to the propulsive "Melancholy" of Disco Nihilist. Perhaps none elicit as many feels as the enveloping opener from Leon Vynehall though.

As well as being a mesmeric mimic of accelerating down Bundesautobahn 5 at daybreak, "Midnight on Rainbow Road" got our Debut nod for three main reasons: firstly, it kicked off last year's sublime set from Gerd & Ata (so, about time); second, it's a welcome return for Mr Vynehall after a richly deserved breakout year; third, dude's got previous with N64 titling. And that's something we can all get behind.

Eerie murmurs and a punching kick greet you in the first few seconds and that sets the tone for the venomous cut. After a minute the rigorous low-end rumbles and bumps into the frame and before long it's all out warfare.

The whole thing explodes and once all the elements are introduced there's no turning back, you're placed slap bang in the danger zone. It's savage but boy is it brilliant.

Premiere: Pig&Dan 'Funk Of The Moog'

Placed firmly at Delsin's core is Conforce – an artist praised for his subtle attention-to detail as well as his broad versatility, with an extensive back catalogue that shows he's in it for the long haul. Originally from Terschelling in Holland, Conforce returns to familiar native turf with his latest venture on Delsin, North to South -­ Part 1. First up on the A-side and setting the tone for the whole release is "Dark Days". Despite slightly obscure undertones found in both the music as well as its title, the track opens North to South's first chapter in a lively, uptempo manner. Propulsive drums carry us through the track, with thrice-manipulated synths piercing through and fading out of the texture. This is modern-day techno programmed for the dancefloor, at its finest.

Conforce "Dark Days" - Boiler Room Debuts

Ransom Note's recent signing Bawrut has been making a bit of a name for himself. His debut Ciquita, which was released earlier this year, has already been devoured by the likes of Jackmaster, Optimo and Boys Noize like a crazed bunch of acid fiends, and the summer season happened to be super fruitful for the Madrid based, Italian born tune-wrangler. We know, intense. It's a piping hot acidic screamer specially crafted for peak times on the dance floor and you get to listen to it right here, right now.

Fresh new Bristol-based label @piff-records open their doors armed with a slew of gleaming, steaming hot wax. We got our mitts on the new To Adelaide EP featuring a compilation of fine Australian talent. Out highlight comes as "Jessica's Place", which offers nothing less than pure smouldering synth-house heaven from (fairly) newcomer @arthurmilesmusic.

Though still relatively unknown across the pond, Arthur has funnily enough already made his Boiler Room debut, as part of the Untzz 12 Inch showcase last April. With his newness on Piff, expect the distinct, dreamscape sound that fellow house producers down under have worked hard to establish (for more, see: Mall Grab and Francis Inferno Orchestra). A clean track with an ever-so-slightly futuristic sound that is sure to grab your attention — as it did with ours. Give it a spin.

The phrase 'one-of-a-kind' perhaps gets thrown around too much these days, but those that already know Auntie Flo (née Brian D'Souza) will join me in saying this is no overstatement. Building a reputation for having one of the most sonically eclectic and captivating live shows, and the revered ability to combine acoustic and electronic elements like no other, Auntie Flo has been excelling at his own game for a minute now.

And now, Auntie Flo is back with a new EP to feed our hungry souls with his beats inspired the sounds of the universe. This project, already with Four Tet's backing, is the product of D'Souza's yearning to share his love of traditional African rhythms, and a wish to bring them to the world's stage. Here, he employs an impressive array of session musicians and a Ugandan ten-string harp, recording it all at the Santuri Studios as part of the Ugandan Bayimba arts festival in Kamapala last year.

"Rainfall on Red Earth" is available in its full 16-minute beauty as part of The Soniferous Garden EP, which will be released in full exclusively on vinyl by Sofrito early next year.

A highly reputable artist with an equally impressive history as a producer, Rodriguez Jr is a prominent member of the Leena music catalogue. His debut on the imprint "Rubbo Swingo" received rave reviews as did his return a year later for Leena's 11th release, "Kids of Hula". 2010 has already witnessed big things from the Belgium based producer, such as "Jerri Call" with Alex Kid on NRK records as well as a handful of remixes including one for Dominik Eulberg on Traum records and Holger Zilske on Playhouse. Now that he's warmed up the dance floor with style, it's time for his eagerly awaited debut on mobilee records, "Princess Guacomole", which comes packed with energy ready to get the Summer parties rocking.

Title track "Princess Guacomole" features a melodic and jazzy hook set over a driving and bouncy percussive bass. Meanwhile B side "La Guapa" will pick you up with by its hypnotic rift which builds up into a frenzy, whilst the digital exclusive serves as the anti-thesis with a deep house rolling percussive bass line and vocal. For the first single from a 6-track EP from Montreal's Clarian (who is also one half of Footprintz), the Canadian reached well beyond the border to collaborate with Tel Aviv-born, Madrid-based producer Guy Gerber on "Claire." Gerber has been a major player on Israel's electronic scene since 2006, running his own Supplemental Facts label and infusing traces of minimal techno, tech house, downtempo and deep house in his productions, while remaining singular in his approach. Clarian's vocal contributions were at the heart of Gerber's progressive house-leaning Fabric mix from last year, which joined the likes of Ricardo Villalobos and Omar-S of artists that turned in single-artist mixes to the series. "Claire" starts amid a queasy vocal snippet (with Clarian's French whisper lodged in at the midpoint) and threatens to go darker and deeper. But a steady handclap and glimmering melodic line uplifts and casts light across this seven-minute track.
