TERR018 - Ganz - Purple Cwtch E.P.


Promising Netherlands producer Ganz releases his debut Terrorhythm EP fresh from the hype of his remix of fellow label-mates Louis Futon’s ‘Shoulda Known’. Pvrple Cwtch (welsh for ‘hug’) sees Ganz reinterpreting popular bass music motif ‘Purple’ with a palette of punchy stadium drums and glossy synths, reminiscent of a certain few Scottish beatsmiths.


Ganz goes straight for the jugular with first track ‘Get One’s’, delivering a restless bassline akin to a whirring, supercharged cattle prod amidst chunky percussive whiplash and an infectious vocal hook.


Next comes ‘Purple Forest’, an electrifying, warpspeed cruise through its icy surroundings, illustrated by layers of peaking, rapturous mid-range and trilling hi-hats.


Final track ‘It’s All Good’ begins with a warm, swooning dose of sub-bass before launching into a turbulent energy surge complete with prog-rock drum fills, shimmering arp melodies and elevating vocals, resulting in a track as emotive as it is club-ready.

Yung Simmie - 275 Royalty

Bwana is a name you may not have heard from in a while. Well, the reasons for that are apparent now: in spite of a strong start, he didn’t want to get swept away as the digital tide went out. Having secured a coveted release on Will Saul’s Aus - not to mention mastering by Gingy, and backed with a Simian Mobile Disco remix on the flip - the man is evidently making good on lost time with “Flute Dreams”.

If that title raises an immediate red flag, fear not. The track does well to repair the (justifiably) wretched reputation that flautists have accrued from their “contributions” to prog rock and Goa trance. Gliding across a galloping beat and a deep bassline stretched repeatedly to disintegration, the flute in question sits cosily, tag-teaming any synth line for a melody that’s tonally richer and a little more distinctive. Odds on you’ll find yourself whistling this in no time.

Bwana "Flute Dreams" - Boiler Room Debuts

Having taken a more passive role providing edits and live instrumentation for the likes of Errors and Clark in recent years, Wax Stag’s sophomore record II (duh) is a supple extension of that pastoral sound. The track titles tell the whole story, really: “Woodland Walk”, “Race To The Lake”, “Caverns” and lead-off “Summit”.

Longtime homie FaltyDL - a man who, as Thris can attest, enjoys the finer things in life (i.e. eating grapes and listening to jazz) - provides a grin-worthy remix of the already ebullient track. The chintzy samples and limber percussion harken back to 2012's Hardcourage/Our House Stab release - bold colours splashed left, right n centre.

Wax Stag "Summit (FaltyDL Remix)" - Boiler Room Debuts

Nathan Fake and Wesley Matsell's new Cambria Instruments label already got us salivating with a split release between the two Border Community-affiliated artists in August. NF's track 'Black Drift' was intriguing and restrained, a subtle return to the fray after two years without releases – but now we have 'Nuuk' from his first full solo Cambria Instruments EP, and he's really cut loose. It's a stunner, somehow both fragile and nails-hard, and easily as spine-tingling as 'The Sky Was Pink'. It's good to have him back.

Both the consistently awesome Innamind label and maverick Turkish producer Emir Ongun aka Gantz have made their mark though 140bpm half-steppers with lung-crushing subs as standard – but both have constantly chipped away at the conventions of the sound, never ever getting locked into formulae. Now with the launch of Innamind's (even more) experimental offshoot, Blacklist, we're fully through the looking glass. Just one listen to Gantz's elastic tempos, sampladelic mischief and slip-sliding sound palette on this track tells you he's no longer tethered to anything but his own warped imagination. We're going to be watching Blacklist with anticipation (and a little trepidation!)
