AAA Mixes

World Cup is now underway. Brasil's first game is Thursday. I don't enjoy the WC. For me, it's a month of suffering that only ends well if Brasil lifts the cup at the end. I've been fortunate enough to experience that twice in my lifetime (94 and 02). The other WCs have lead to heartbreak and depression for a few days. Brasil is a favorite to win every WC per usual. However, being a favorite and lifting the copa are two different things.

This isn't a WC mix, but there are drops from the 70 WC because Brasil 70 is considered the greatest team ever. Mix is actually inspired by Quasimoto. With Adventures of Quas; Madlib basically made an album mixing his favorite things; records, Sun Ra, and Melvin Van Pebbles. I took the same basic elements and added my favorite thing; Brasil futbol. Tres Campeao

This is an early song by Gang Starr; "So What", as played on Magnus Johnstone's "Lecco's Lemma" Boston rap radio show in 1986. Vocals by Keithy E (Keith Elam), production by Beatmaster Jay (John Johnson). Damo D-Ski and/or Mike Dee may have been involved in this recording as well, but that was never my impression. I just wanted to upload this here, since I didn't find any other instances of it anywhere else on the internet. I suppose it's included somewhere within cassette side rips on the Massachusetts Hip-Hop Archive, but this seems simpler and more direct.

It is legitimately one of my favorite rap songs I was listening to back then, on record or not. It features rapping, singing, drum programming, bass, keyboards, vocoder, and what sounds like some primitive sampling... It is a PRODUCED song, and was a big influence on 13/14-year-old me as I began to produce my own music. Back when Gang Starr appeared at Tower Records on Newbury Street for their induction into the Walk Of Fame, my friend and I drove back and forth in front of the store blasting this and "Cold Cold World" and "Disa Disa", in an effort to... I dunno, be funny and clever, maybe catch the ear of other fans who remembered Lecco's Lemma, or perhaps even to bring a smile to Keith's face if he heard his songs go by.

Diggers Dozen #1: The Ethnic Crate
RECORDED LIVE: Sunday 16th March, 2014

Here's a new trilogy of mixes from the "Diggers Dozen" event that I put on in Brisbane, Australia back in 2014. Each of these themed mixes each feature 12 top-tier records hand picked from the Bulletproof Crates played out live on 2 turntables, mixer and a Kaossilator.

This first mix is the "Ethnic Crate" featuring some off the wall digs dug up in dusty record stores, flea markets & junk shops in the depths of Israel, Lebanon, Japan, Germany, Thailand, Belgium, Australia and of course, the US. Expect some heavy drum breaks with some exotic rock, psych & jazz sounds in the mix.

The next mix in the trilogy will drop week and continue this theme with 12 x 7" 45s.
