This week’s mix comes from Jake Miller, 1/5 of the new Reggae crew ‘Youth Downbeat Sound’. Jake has spent the last few years working in the legendary London record shop Flashback Records and is a serious collector of all things Reggae. He has a monthly show on Kindred Radio exploring all different kinds of vinyl crackle and will be launching a new hand built sound system with his crew in May. The first ReFrame of 2023 and one that's been coming together on the slow cook for a few months now, crystallising as the soundtrack to a recent break away in the Lakes.

The first hopefully in a series that's unashamedly stolen it's name from Enid Blytons splendid children's tale... a childhood fave.  Musically this is one gently ambles through left of centre hazy downbeats, psyche, folk, library music, a bit of MF Doom and lots of Balearic niceties. Picking up the pace to close with a few Afro cosmic percussive faves old and new.

Pleased with how this one's come together. Music from Stringtronics, Hoover, Wool, John Mark, Lucio Battisti, Love & Rockets, Leon Lowman, MF Doom, Khruangbin, Bottin, Carly Simon, Baby Cool, African Head Charge, East coast Love Affair. Inspired by the London Jazz Dance scene & the local cosmic music phenomenon I started a club night called VIBE KLUB back in 1991 with Marc Frank (lesgammas, 7 Samurai,panoptikum,Dubben etc..) 
& HP (Dubben) in our hometown Augsburg in South Germany. 
A weekly Saturday night  @ Kerosin which went on until 2005....we were spinnin classic breaks,rare grooves,jazz, old school hip hop & had an neverending hunger for  the kind of lush, dreamy 70´s fusion sound that you can hear in this mix. These are the roots of the later german Nu Jazz sound sported by Rainer Trüby, Theo Thönessen, Heiko Jahnke, Rosko ,Claas , Jürgen ,Alex, Michael Rütten, Emanuela de Luca ,Mark Bohlman,Rob Spoljaric ,Spinning Wheel etc...

1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

I'm Shatter Hands, hailing from Svendborg, Denmark. I'm mainly in to production, but I've been DJ'ing and scratching since the mid '00's. Raised on Portishead and DJ Shadow, but born again via the so-called beat scene of the '10's. Autodidact digger with a collection of ca. 1500 pieces. Not too many 7's but they've become my fav format in recent years. My collection consists mainly of instrumental beats, rap, some house and jazz, past and present.

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

I used to skip the 7 bins when I was digging and now I blame myself. I've come to love the format because of the size and portability, the labels and their artwork and not having to skip through tracks when DJ'ing.

3) 50 minutes of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

News of MF DOOM's passing really got to me, so I'm starting out, and ending, with him and Madlib. In between you'll find beats, rap and some psych/fuzz/heavy on the drums kinda stuff. It's a short mix, given the size of my collection, but It'll give you an idea of what I listen to and play these days.
