Having established himself as Progressive Trance (Protonica) producer and DJ Piet Kämpfer explores a new contemporary direction into Melodic Techno.
Now based in Berlin, Piet uses his experience in writing melodies, leads and sequences for Protonica to form his new style a combination of Techno and Elements of Trance.
Because of his roots in Berlin, Techno is and has been part of his life and inspiration for a long time.

For a long time, melodies were frowned upon in techno, but now with the new music genre "Melodic Techno", the mostly rather minimal beats are combined with the harmonic to create something new.
In a world that is becoming more complex and darker, "Melodic Techno" brings the simple but also the positive back into music and thus creates a new zeitgeist.

His first single „The Origin" brings back Piet's first steps in producing - when it was easy fun, spending hours in the studio and just going with the flow.

Following on from the sublime ‘Lark Descending’, Simon continues his pursuit of creating uncompromising, individualistic compositions.

A behemoth of a bass riff dominates proceedings, menacingly meandering through resonating troughs and peaks, interspersed with an eerie and bewildering bowed instrument from Turkey.  A rejuvenating breakdown is infused with a flute-laden soup abyss before hurtling headlong back into the modular mayhem.

Israeli producer Sam Waller aka ON3 was under strict instructions to get his 303 out for his interpretation and he did not disappoint.  A haunting Arabian vocal and more of that eerie, twisted Turkish instrument, cascade effortlessly over a bed of writhing TB Snakes.  ‘Gargantua’ is a leviathan of a release.

Originally released back in ’95, ‘Octopus’ is one of Simon Berry’s strongest Art Of Trance releases to date. Later that year, it was remixed by R&S artist Capricorn (of 20Hz fame) and Man With No Name, so it seemed that after 20 years new remixes were surely justified.

Italy’s fast rising star Gai Barone has delivered quite possibly the finest remix he’s ever done with his Gallery Remix. Not only that, he decided to do a second remix for good measure.

Israel’s Yuli from Perfect Stranger serves up a very solid mix which stays closer to the original.

Frenchman, Rick Pier O’Neil returns with another sublime slice of sunrise.

Englishman, Matt Holliday offers a spacious and textured soundscape for his interpretation and is followed by a remastered version of the original.

Back in 1995, in a 4 page Mixmag Platipus special, Simon Berry was described by Alexis Petridis as “The Unstoppable Trance Machine". A quarter of a century on and Mr Petridis was not wrong. As the force behind Art Of Trance, one half of Union Jack, and founder of Platipus Records, Simon has been consistently fine tuning his trademark sound with chart topping singles on Bedrock, Platipus and Circus.

Following on from his ground breaking solo excursions ’Black Rainbow’, ‘Anaconda’ and ‘Rogue Planet’, Simon makes a return to nature with ‘Pangolin’.

Opening with the omnipotent original, ‘Pangolin’ emerges from the undergrowth as a low slung elusive anomaly. Rattling percussion paves the way for oriental ear bending arpeggios, soaring chords and descending scales, providing shimmering glimmers of hope for a more utopian vision of the future beyond pandemonium.

Ominous low frequency oscillations introduce the second instalment of 'Pangolin' by Berlin frequency wizard Torsten Fassbender. Spiralling glitched arpeggios are interspersed with jagged fluttering sawtooth pulsations. A divine audio delicacy to be savoured, or a medicinal musical doctrine?

Tokyoite DJ, producer, label owner and radio presenter Satoshi Fumi has been sharpening his katana over the course of time with a collection of quality releases on esteemed labels such as Get Physical, Bedrock and Moodmusic. Premiering on John Digweed’s Bunker Session 12, Satoshi’s instalment of 'Pangolin' is quite possibly his strongest remix to date. He unashamedly dissipates any distancing rules to implement a gentle pummelling of deep driving House, rich in rhythm and melodic tech nostalgia, revealing his roots in early 90's Chicago House and Detroit Techno, in a noble attempt to save it from extinction.

POB (Paul Brogden) has been lurking elusively behind the scenes now for some time, most notably remixing classics such as ’Heaven Scent’ by Bedrock, ’Break For Love’ by Raze, as well as numerous releases on Bedrock, his own label Seismic, and Platipus who released his excellent debut album ‘Essence’. He’s also collaborated with Simon Berry as Clanger since 1993 and Union Jack with their seminal album ’Pylon Pigs’.

After a seven year solo hiatus, and never one for seeking the limelight, POB proudly unveils his latest overtures. Shunning the traditional remix route, Paul yields two truly unique offerings.

‘Darkness’ plunges to new depths with rolling subtones, relentlessly hypnotic guiro-esque hihats and an arsenal of deranged vocals.

‘Lightness’ discharges a crusading cacophony of grotesque vocal warblings fresh out of the asylum, a barrage of dark bass, and a couple of psychotic heavy breathers that bizarrely crossfade into light-drenched synth chords. You couldn’t make it up … POB can.

Having concluded his resounding astral explorations with ‘Rogue Planet’ and ‘Martian Sunrise’, Simon submerges himself into unchained, uncharted waters.

A vortex of dark and tempestuous gated strings in the Original Mix are underpinned by a metallic resonating bassline, splintered percussion and twisted swirling vocal fragments that pull you under. 

Initially offering a false sense of calm, Torsten’s remix is anything but. Beyond the gentle undercurrent of synth vapour and spiralling arpeggios emerges a menacing and minacious moog riff set to cause the perfect storm. This is quite possibly Torsten’s finest work to date.

Continuing the descent into the maelström, seasoned Israeli DJ/Producer OCHERii delivers a sublime slab of innovative hypnotic Techno at its finest. Pulsating surging base waves provide the turbulent backdrop to more treacherous depths. A relentlessly unnerving drone funnels it’s way into the mist-drenched aether, interspersed with cicada-esque hihats, granular sequences and a plethora of OCHERii’s trademark deep and subtle modular warblings.

All three versions of Maelström represent the diversity of sound and depth that is befitting of recent releases on Platipus.
