Inspired by the story of Dangerfield Newby, one of five African-Americans in the John Brown party, this Atlanta-based duo delivers a set that is deeply rooted in blues, jazz, soul, funk, hip-hop, house; pretty much the American musical spectrum. Formed by DJ's Jamal Ahmad and Mark Angel, the mission was to create a sound that encapsulated a soulful and well-rounded listening experience. Featuring the talent of countless musicians and the vocal stylings of singer/songwriter's J'Picolla, Mashan Da'lyric and Julie Dexter, their debut "Hariet" is out now and the album can best be described as a "groove gumbo". Member Jamal Ahmad, says that "the mission was to dig deep inside and pull out all of our most personal influences. No matter if it's hip-hop like A Tribe Called Quest or house music in the Master At Work vein: we wanted to create a warm. personal sound". HK (High Key) Carti is a Bay Area Native born Marianna Taylor May 8, 1996 in Oakland California.  After the loss of her mother at the tender age of 3, Carti was raised by her father.  Her father instilled in Carti that she could be anything she wanted so at the tender age of 5 she began singing in her church choir.  Carti soon discovered that people enjoyed her gospel singing, but she had other plans.  At the age of 10 she began secretly listening to and falling in love with secular music; more specifically, hip hop.  She began writing poetry and rhymes and set out to find her voice in the industry.


The name HK Carti stems from her “high key” personality and her taste in designer lenses by Cartier.  Her melodic rhymes and songs are inspired by artists such as Erykah Badu and Nicki Minaj’s older works.  Her lyrics are inspired by her life experiences and the need to make her late mother and family proud.  She also hopes to use her music to motivate others to be comfortable in their own skin and to be okay with being who they are in spite of what others think.  She describes herself as a lover and her sound as a cross between rap and soul.

Although Carti is only 20 years old, she’s accomplished a lot in just a short few years.  Carti has worked with artists such as Ashy Black Thug, Jahni Bravo, FORN and DH-100.  She’s also recorded music for the documentary “A Mother’s Cry: Permission to Speak”, coining the film’s main and title track. Her progressive sound leaves listeners with thoughtful lyrics that not only have a good feel, but also a tonality that says she means business.  Carti is known as the “little one with a mean punch” because when she gets on the mic other emcees marvel at how someone so small can gas a track that hard.  Whether hard or soft, singing or rapping, HK Carti has set out to create her own destiny and unique voice in this world and we are all going to hear it.
