Released in 2022, the debut album "Cycles" by Turkish producer DJ Strawberry brought a surprising mix of genres. The tracks, which were kept at 160 bpm, combined the Chicago footwork tradition with its hybrid formula inspired by Japanese minimalism and spacey dub techno in a highly inventive way.

Two years after the release of his debut album, DJ Strawberry, returns with a follow-up to "Cycles" entitled "Beyond". The process of making the album was accompanied by many difficult moments. In February 2023, his country was hit by the largest earthquake in its history that significantly affected his family and loved ones. What brought the producer respite from these hard times was to dive into making music. "Beyond" is therefore a story about suffering, anxiety, but also about the process of coming out of these difficult emotions towards something constructive that brought joy and relief.

The album begins with crystal and delicate sounds in "following you". We see some idyllic and jittery imagery, which lightly jumps to the rhythm of complex rhythms. The character and atmosphere of the album transform with the second track. In "soyut", a noticeable tectonic shock is triggered by nervous percussion loops and the deep intensity of the infra-pulse. This physical aspect of experiencing sound and the vibrations it generates constitute the primary foundation that binds the music of "Beyond". The low-pitched, rough bass that appears in "soyut" also resounds in the next anxious track "çıkmaz", its dirty, earthy sound referencing footwork productions dedicated to competing dancers. The change in atmosphere doesn't come until "euphoria." After the first half, echoing the emotions of earlier tracks, the second half of the piece, DJ Strawberry, transports the listener into a space of liberating relief and affirmation. Ending the album, "feedback loopjuke" is a minimalist coda with swirling looped drums and juke claps fired off in the final part of the track.

The therapeutic aspect of the music contained on "Beyond" places DJ Strawberry's actions in close proximity to the similar sonic practice of another representative of the outlines, Jana Rush. Her album "Painful Enlightenment", released on Planet Mu, also used footwork to deal with difficult emotions. Once again, then, a musical genre whose prior function was mainly to "serve" competing dancers has transcended this traditional format to become a vehicle for DJ Strawberry's personal narrative.

papaya kicks off the EP with half-tempo beat and slowly creeping bassline that rapidly turns into stealthy dagger, piercing right through sub frequencies.

gash will release on 12th April 2024, and as the inaugural offering from ŚLINA, it sets a bold precedent for the label's future.

Bruit Fantôme. That's what we call tinnitus. It's a sometimes incessant whistling sound that comes unexpectedly and whose origin seems mysterious. It's also the name of an enigmatic character born from the sequencers of an MAO software and a love of jazz without reference points.

And while Bruit Fantôme's rhythms are unfailingly precise, the punk spirit and elements of surprise intrude at every interstice of his music. With synthwave layers painted on broken kicks and nebulous acid melodies, he transports listeners into a space-time rift, heading for 80s Detroit.

His new EP Egypte Pyramide is a vibrant tribute to this era, marked by artists such as Egyptian Lover and Drexciya, at the crossroads of cybernetic techno and organic hypnosis. A-Sim and Evenn add a new dimension to the whole with their remixes bridging the gap with today's club scene.

Toronto based @Dacou serves up the latest instalment in the Sinchi Edits series.

'Kenedougou Foly' is a song kindred to its composer, Neba Solo - both are rooted in the historical and cultural legacy of Mali and Western Africa. Hailing from the Kenedougou region of southeastern Mali, Solo and the balafon (modified xylophone) masterclass he provides on the title track of his debut album are a fitting tribute to his homeland, the historic Kenedougou Kingdom of the Traorè dynasty.

The song begins with an invocation or call to attention "Ayeh Na”, as Neba Solo begins to provide commentary on the socio-economic issues faced by the people of Kenedougou. The song also speaks about the environmental degradation of the land and acknowledges the struggles faced by its people, while calling for collective action from the world to address these issues facing Western Africa.

I chose this particular song because I’ve always appreciated the sound and emotional response of West African music, Mali in particular. From Oumou Sangare and Fatoumata Diawara to the Tuareg sounds of Bombino and Tinariwen, Malian sounds resonate worlds over despite people not immediately understanding the words being spoken. Kenedougou Foly is such a track that just elicits a heartfelt feeling, stemming from Neba Solo’s infectious vocals, a call and response from backup vocalists, as well as his prodigious bafalon playing that is at the core of his genius.

My approach was quite simple. As folk songs of this archetype are usually bereft of electronic or Western dance elements, I added what I felt was necessary to provide a high-energy and hard-hitting version to be played out and played loud. Starting and ending with Neba Solo’s call for attention seemed fitting, sandwiched between Italo-style arp bass, some 303 acid sounds, and a 4/4 beat to tie everything together.

Claire Lefèvre remembers learning about Loïe Fuller in dance history classes: she was one of the “mothers of modern dance”, up there with Ruth St. Denis and Isadora Duncan. She revolutionised theatre lighting and after moving to Paris in the 1890‘s she became famous worldwide for her hypnotising dances, where she twirled with illuminated fabrics to transform herself into butterflies, snakes, or flowers. “Every teacher mentioned how important she was for the field,” Claire Lefèvre says, “but no one ever told me she was a lesbian. Or that she was a colonial poster child.”

SSRI - Mysterious duo (Sandra Mikołajczyk and Igor Gadomski) from the center of Poland, is a band whose activity isn't easy to define but often delving into the darker fringes of dub. Their music is often described as a genre of underwater reggae, likely influenced by the distinctive industrial sound of Łódź and a heavy use of reverb effects. They draw inspiration from the city and its distorted concept of tropical nature.

As residents of Radio Kapitał, hosting a show inspired by mental states and the circumstances of their creation, they bring an additional context and depth to SSRI's music.
Their debut album, set to be released on April 29, 2024, by Pointless Geometry.
