Kicking off the new year Steve Bug style – Poker Flat Recordings sets course for another year of quality house music. The label boss himself presents us with the first transmission of 2014 - and the title succinctly nails what to expect.

'Simple, Thick & Raw' contains three tracks that are simultaneously gritty, tough and highly effective. 

'The Arpeggio' contains Bug’s signature control of tension – an arpeggiated synth line bubbles along, hardly restrained, on top of a firing drum pattern, resulting in a groove wound tight and packed with suspense. 

'Thickest Bass' is also fairly self explanatory- a pitched down vocal introduces what might just be the filthiest bottom end Bug has ever produced. The track has a raw, off-kilter quality that will see it destroy many clubs when dropped at the optimum moment.

'Smoking Parrot' completes the trio, a tough yet spacey burner that builds into a indisputable floor-rocker, complete with punchy claps, descending bass-line and Bug’s well honed dynamics.

'Life in Circles'  completes the release - a tech house pearl with a touch of acid.

Life often consists of finding a balance between the sweet, sour and bitter. Sometimes it can feel like walking a tightrope and at other times it’s a joyful experience of serendipity. Bending away from a course or position of alignment, the distance between yourself and the people close to you constantly shifts. If one of the distances changes, the others do so automatically. It requires a true maverick to fully experience, a brave soul that is willing to sacrifice and trade in the morality play for the entire chromatic spectrum. Do you think you will enter the garden of bliss without such trials as come to those who passed before you? 

Something Happening Somewhere head honcho Nuno dos Santos is presenting his first and very personal EP on his label called Trigonometry of Love. After his Wibaut127 and a string of acclaimed remixes it’s time to let Nuno speak from the heart, being one of those souls who knows there is no reward without renunciation. 

As a departure point, Storm Inside doesn’t beat around the bush. With it’s eerie vibe, thundering claps and stomping bassline it feels like there’s something dark stirring inside. You have to take a dip into the unknown before you can embark on your journey. Trippy and chopped up sounds make way for the breath of a vocal before returning back to the abyss. Sound molded into an angry tour de force for the basement. 

Wonka’s groove came straight from the chocolate factory. Wonky sounding bells tickle the ear and lush pads assimilate an injection of purifying mountain air before a hypnotizing motif enters the stage and it all evolves into an organic substance. 

Prosa evolves around a delightful melancholic chord progression with voice stabs that ascend into clouds of desire. It teases until finally breaking trough with a arpeggiated bassline that lifts you into further blissful states. If being in love would have a sonic signature, this is how it could sound. 
When you’re trying to catch your own reflection, Dust In Your Eyes is there for your needed introspection. A bass cadence is covering the veil, concealing your true self. Quirky percussion and pads slowly reveal the truth. Rethinking your position, sometimes it’s better to stop the thinking mind and find your way by heart. Calculations stop making sense when everything is in flux.

I’ve had it on repeat for a while, and it only gets better and better.
I am absolutely in love with the vocals which are beautifully mixed with an acid house groove that’s gonna keep me up for nights in a row for sure.

This one goes out to all you soggy DJs out there. The selectors and entertainers whose slot is not in sync with mother nature’s winning hand. You look out over a sea of anoraks and subdued faces and wonder if the sun will ever shine again. You look at your beer and wish it was a warm cup of tea. You look down at your coat and realise you’ll never pack your winter wardrobe away for the summer…  

These instances are hard, if not impossible, to imagine as this year’s unlikely heatwave continues to dazzle and frazzle us. But we all know that those rainy day moments do exist. We’ve all played them in the past. We’ve all got many more in the future. And now Darkroom Dubs have the perfect soundtrack for them: Skinnerbox – ‘Music For Sad & Rainy Open Airs’. 

Two tracks tailored for the greyest of outdoor shows. Moody, pensive and vitally atmospheric; both ‘Cold Neck’ and ‘Wet Shoes’ counter and complement any damp DJ set consummately. The former is a lavish, eight-minute saga that ripples with analog weight and shines with sudden cosmic blasts. The sinewy latter extends the trip closer to nine minutes with a wriggling weave of acid and bass before smacking us hard with vibrant solar sensation in the epic breakdown. No matter how treacherous the conditions you play this in are, the sun will always rise.

Cold neck, wet shoes, warm heart: The weather might be an unpredictable beast, but these tracks most certainly guarantee temperate reactions. And let’s face it; this is Skinnerbox and Darkroom Dubs… These guarantee joy regardless of what weather mother nature throws at us. Enjoy!

It’s 2020, the dusty Pets plain spreads out before you. Nothing but sand, cactus plants and a bottle of good old red eye are all you have for company. Then you hear the shots. They’re fired with such flare they can only be from one man… Renato Cohen AKA the ‘Lone Ranger’
He fires in such a way you can’t help but move your feet. Then you move your hips. Then your head. Then your heart. You’re in funky town now and Renato’s the mayor. He leads with the disco bubbles and slinky restrained funk of ‘Lone Ranger’ before moving on to the heavier weaponry; the cowbell riddled, hoover-rattled stomper ‘Deocleciana’ and the bassline-plunging, deep funk hustling swagger of ‘Bismuth’.
And it seems our lonesome techno patrolman isn’t working alone… ‘Bismuth’ is also backed by an incredible remix from Jennifer Cardini. Ramping up the energy with a precision arpeggio bassline and injecting an entirely different sense of uplift with a lavish synth melody, it shoots from the hip in the most euphoric of ways.
