Tripeo is feeling a bit more angry on his Fourth Trip. Probably due to massive lay-overs and delays. Untitled #7 and #8 are two industrial cuts with extreme synth- and FX-programming to maximize dancefloor devastation. Only meant to be played out LOUD.

“I've intended to do an album for a long while. The tracks draw upon ideas going back to various points over the last 12 years or so - some of the hooks I wrote years ago other bits are brand new. In some ways I wanted it to reflect a personal arc and the way I tend to do things  - never rushed”

‘Frames of Reference’ is the some 12 years in the making debut album from UK based techno producer Ø [Phase].

Best known by his work on the Belgium based Token Records his style ranges from gritty minimal techno to Detroit influenced material. His debut ‘Module Overload’ was released on London’s Lost/Cosmic records in 2000 and was followed by a string of productions for London's Surface/Inceptive Records and Ben Sims Ingoma imprint.

The move to Token came in 2007, he shortly after began DJing professionally and has since performed at parties across the globe whilst becoming a regular guest at Berlin’s techno Mecca, Berghain performing alongside esteemed peers and supporters such as Marcel Dettmann, Len Faki and Ben Klock. His continued works have seen constant support throughout the techno world and have featured in CD mixes by Robert Hood, Dave Clarke, François Kevorkian and Fumiya Tanaka amongst others. Alongside his production work Ø [Phase] is also a mastering engineer and on/off artwork designer. Starting out at London’s prestigious Sony Music/Whitfield Street Studios, he has cut records for numerous underground dance acts as well as working on projects for mainstream artists.

Now after a string of acclaimed releases on Token and a selection of remixes for the likes of Robert Hood, Mark Broom and Peter Van Hoesen comes Ø [Phase]’s debut long-player ‘Frames of Reference’. Opening with the brooding and building swirl of ‘Binary Opposition (Process 3)’ Ø [Phase] sets out his template of evolving, richly textured atmospheres underpinned by shards of dark and light. ‘The Bwiti Initiate’ revolves around a bouncing techno rhythm that could most certainly traverse the house/techno divide whilst ‘Distracted’ and ‘Misaligned’ are the kind of unadulterated, pummeling, cavernous techno tracks that have made Lost such a party institution.
Then we have tracks like the soft beating ‘Just Another Dance’ providing a lighter edge, embellished with warmth and strings and the thick, densely woven tapestry of ‘Shadow Caster’ which goes from experimental to dancefloor and back again with consummate ease. The off-kilter lilt of ‘Perplexed’ drags us further into the dark before keys and a hint of a melody draw us back upwards for air whilst the fat driving bass of ‘Dirtro II’ and funkier edged menace of ‘On The Edge’ show a virtuoso producer at the top of his game. The closing introspection of ‘Self Deceit’ wallows in subtle nuances before a mid section synth and string intervention pulls us back from the brink before finally descending into the void.

Children Of Tomorrow's Podcast 06 - Zadig

Our guest for this week is none other than Mark Morris(@mark_morris). Originally from Naples, Italy, Mark is now based in the capital city for techno, namely Berlin. Mark had an early debut with music and has kept a certain standard to his work ever since. He is the head of his own label Ketra Records which can be held responsible for releasing mindblowing EP’s from various artist. 

In this episode we can expect a “No Bullshit” approach to a raw techno sound interestingly mixed together. 

Q&A:

Q:
How has the techno scene in Italy influenced you as a Dj and producer 

A:
The techno scene in my town was always one of the most active in Italy. When I was young, artists such Marco Carola, Gaetek, Rino Cerrone and many more were the best techno djs in the scene and they influenced of course my idea of techno music.

Q:
What made you decide to move to Berlin?

A:
I decide to move in Berlin after living in Spain. Berlin was the last step for me to really understand the techno world. Berlin helped me to find the right way in my sound. This was one of the most important moments of my career.

Q:
In this mix you are running the tempo at 135 bpm, which is some what unorthodox. How would you describe your style of playing? 

A:
As I mentioned, my techno vision is influenced by the old school. I love to mix hardtechno as I love the industrial way and the dark atmosphere. That's more or less the best description of my sound: fast, dance-floor, heavy & dark.

Q:
What inspires you as a producer?

A:
As producer I'm really complicated. Normally I don't like to have inspiration as other producers. I Love for sure artists such Surgeon and Regis, but maybe the best inspiration for me are my own artists as Logotech, Future 16, Unam Zetineb and my wife Kata Mercado. I think the best inspiration come from those who are close to me.

Q:
Any comments about upcoming gigs or releases?

A:
For sure the last EP on Mano Recordings (label by me & Zetineb) with the remixes from the legendary ESPLENDOR GEOMETRICO & CASUAL VIOLENCE. This is one of the best releases I have done so far. I will soon be out with the next Mano with a remix by ONTAL.

The next gigs are a b2b with Kata in Bologna (Italy). I also have a new project I started with my collab. Logotech & Future 16 with parties in our own town Naples.

Following EOMAC’s debut album “Spectre” on Killekill, released earlier this year, here come remixes of the three most outstanding tracks of the album.
TOMMY FOUR SEVEN picked the title track SPECTRE, taking away some of the dense texture of the original, speeding it up a bit and adding some straight-forward percussion to turn the original into a big anthem for the mellow moments on the dancefloor.
Lars Stöwe aka Anstam is using his ANNO STAMM-alias to rip out the distorted bassline of the grimey SU RIDDIM and add some playful bassline variations and some serious 808 business to it to turn it into a peaktime banger with lots of chicago flavour.
AnD do what they do best and turn SHELL OF DARK into a half-tempo stomper that after a while breaks up to a devastating weapon of distorted drums and melodies.

Dark Entries Editions is venturing into new waters with a remix EP of Psychic TV’s classic Acid House song “Alien Be-In”. Psychic TV was formed by Genesis P-Orridge and Peter Christopherson after the breakup of Throbbing Gristle in 1981. After various line up changes, the band shifted direction to dance oriented songs influenced by the Acid House scene in America. By 1988 experimental electronic musician Fred Giannelli, of Turning Shrines, joined the band and over the next 2 years started to record songs for “Toward The Infinite Beat”. The album was a mix of deep, multilayered tracks full of bright and hypnotic dance numbers, providing the soundtrack to the rave culture that sprung up in the UK in the 90s. 

“Alien Be-In” was written in early 1989 on an E-mu Emax Sampler and an Alesis MMT-8 sequencer.  Vocal samples were taken from a tape Germs drummer Don Bolles sent to Genesis. A didgeridoo rides throughout the song, heavily modulated by a Gristleizer creating a hypnotic effect. Near the end of the song the breakbeat slides out of time yet the band chose to leave this in because it sounded strange and fit the concept of the track. Genesis played a spaced out Echo Violin and the band used 360 degree panning rotation devices. For this reissue Fred Giannelli takes a stab at remixing the mono mix of the original sequence sourced from the Emax floppy discs. On the flip are two brand new mixes, the first from Los Angeles based producer, Silent Servant, who updates the classic with his modern brand of driving EBM techno.  The second remix is a team effort from Silent Servant and veteran producer John Tejada, that re-creates the original melody using a Roland TR-808 and TB-303, paying homage to early Chicago Acid House artists like Lil Louis and Robert Owens. 

All songs have been mastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The 12” is housed in a mind-alerting, metallic silver die-cut sleeve and a neon green label that pops through, featuring the psychic skull transformed into an alien cone head label all designed by Eloise Leigh. Each copy includes a 2-sided 11x11 square insert with black and white photo of the band from 1988 and liner notes by Fred Giannelli.
