"little sounds in huge expansive spaces"

This mix was my musical extrapolation of this quote. As I put together the tracks in the mix, the idea of small sounds in big spaces became more metaphysical, as a metaphor for memory and nostalgia. Small, seemingly insignificant events in our past can expand in significance over time, informed by our experiences later on in life, and with our emotions acting as a tool of reverberation, extending their presence in our lives far past their time of occurrence. What begun as a process of selecting tracks that quite literally feature "small sounds in big spaces" soon morphed into a dig into my distant past, to nearly 20 years ago when I first started learning to DJ. I pulled from the mnml tracks that had an important influence on my formative years, their impact can still be heard in the contemporary tracks I play today, all of them bouncing next to each other in this nearly 2hr musical collage.

It is during summer 2024, in front of 40 subs stacked under the trees of Draaimolen’s Forest Rave stage that we first met Faited. Envelope Soundsystem conjurer, soundsystem fabricator, and a wonderfully skilled vinyl DJ, Faited has made of sound an element that she invokes, crafts and playfully selects. Based in Oakland, CA, she is deeply involved in building and nurturing communities in the pure rave spirit, sharing both her knowledge of acoustic waves and bringing people together around music. 

When it comes to her vinyl selection and practice, it is raw sounds and moving energies that connect her record collection. From mind melting drum’n’base to ravey techno and trippy tech house escapes, it is a body freeing feeling that she creates on the dance floor. 

Faited had a busy summer, touring in Europe and playing a few festivals: The Great Beyond Festival in Minneapolis, Draaimolen in Tilburg (with an incredible performance alongside Octo Octa), and the multi-day rave System Activate in Vermont. When not DJing, she designs and fabricates new loudspeaker designs under her brand Faited Systems.

It is a real honour and pleasure to host Faited for Polychrome Radio on Echobox Radio. This hour of music encapsulates her unique dance floor perspective, and we can’t wait to share it all with you!

zi! @ Sustain-Release Year Eleven

In the words of Scott Zacharias, who closed the Outer Space Room at No Way Back, May 25, 2025, Day 2 of Return to the Source at Tangent, Detroit:

“NWB, being more than just the sum of its parts, always reflects my current life state(or lack of) and this year was no different. My friend Zach reminded me of this ultra-special cut by Arthur Russell: “In the Light of the Miracle.” It’s one of those holy grails and this mix (by Danny Krivit & Tony Smith) only existed as unreleased Talking’ Loud promo until a Soul Jazz comp finally issued it properly in 2005. I used to run it occasionally some 20 years ago, but hearing it again left me shook and set the stage for my entire set. And the rest of my life. My partner Ellen and I learned we were pregnant that same weekend.

Completely overwhelmed, I felt like I just wanted to share music for folks like I do in my own living room. Not really as a mix, but an intimate family affair. In the wee hours of the morning when I finally decided to share Russell’s opus, Ellen joined me on stage. We embraced and cried as we saw all our friends dancing in a now sunlit room.

"Here's my two (and a bit) hour set from Field Maneuvers back in August, my favourite festival in the world.

This was by far the most time I've ever spent preparing for a single set or mix—I probably went through 10-15 crates of tracks, obsessing over flow, texture and tempo. Eventually, I landed here: an expression of love for dance music at 174/140 BPM.

After learning the recorder malfunctioned on the night, I quickly re-recorded it to ensure I reflected the flow of the night as closely as possible.


The set represents exactly what I personally wanna hear on massive sound systems right now and is a love letter to the hours danced in that field with my best friends.

An hour of new musical ideas surrounded by good friends at Sustain Release :)  

In this set I test a lot of new sonic directions, leaning into my love of spiraling synth lines, tactile drums, and sounds that evoke playful little creatures (so I've been told) :D

This was my first time at Sustain and I'm so grateful it was memorable. Big thanks to everyone who got freaky with me in the Gymnasium! I know there were a lot of other options...

One disclaimer : For the first 5 minutes of this set I couldn't  really hear my monitors (time for in-ears I think). But know that what you hear sounded way better in the room :P

Ayesha Live @ Sustain Release Year 11

The phase shift from No Way Back’s nocturne rave acrobatics to Lot Mass’ sunkissed daytime salon is always a sight to behold: an eclectic mixture of smoked out ravers emerging from the depths of Tangent Gallery, freshly showered music heads taking in the Memorial Day sun, & multi-generational dancers defying category or definition, the day feels infinite, & the musical possibilities especially so, bookending the weekend’s mayhem. This year, Johnny Zoloft and Kiernan Laveaux took the post-Scott Z morning baton pass into further realms of house music in the beyond, equipped with nothing but two turntables, Alpha Theta Club Standard DJ Gear, & a surprise special guest: Baltimore saxophonist (and Johnny Zoloft’s brother) Shane Kelly, blowing raucous textures over abyssal blends under the midday sun, as they beckoned dancers towards their final day of Detroit Electronic Music Celebrations. 

Reinvigorating the floor & painting with bold brushstrokes on a kinetic eisel, Laveaux’s xenofeminist inclinations and the duo’s expert dubwise FX manipulation enticed the crowd and provided succulent ear candy throughout the set. Further entrancing dancers into endless movement after No Way Back’s 12 hour marathon in the mind palace, they brought forth a unique vision of so-called Midwest dance music - conjuring soundscapes as informed by the expanses of Detroit’s storied history & multi-lane highways as it is by the DMV’s intersection of funk stylistics, punk attitude, & Sing Sing breakbeats, the expansive mountain ranges & hidden wonders of Appalachia, & northeast Ohio’s irreverent sonic dialectics birthed from the backdrop of industry & decay. All of these combine to form something greater than the sum of it’s parts - an audio cauldron of what makes the midwest so rife with electrified mojo, brought to you by simply another bold presentation of groove, energy, & harmonious cacophony on a special Memorial day afternoon.

MASS CAST 035: Johnny Zoloft B2B Kiernan Laveaux @ Lot Mass

Hailing from the city of Rotterdam, Mata Disk found his influences early on as his parents exposed him to 90s electro. They ultimately led to a distinctive sound that blends polyrhythmic elements, atmospheric textures, and subtle, glistening detail. Emerging with two standout releases on Nousklaer audio, Julian quickly established a signature approach, grounded in rhythm and repetition but open to abstraction, surprise and the occasional emotive touch.

Mata Disk shares a part of his sonic world with us in this mix, showcasing why he is one to watch, but most importantly one to dance and listen to.

Deeply involved in dance music and its nightlife for many years, Lennie has always kept his extensive collection alive, offering glimpses of it on special occasions.  Trying to pick up the pieces of the puzzle one record at a time, he glues together the warm je-ne-sais-quoi he finds in jazz, hiphop, dub and funk, and channels it into the red line that fuels his groove-driven sets — leaning on the warmer shades of dub, minimal techno and house, where groove sets the tone and hips and heads follow the pace.  Based in Amsterdam but with firm roots at Arnhem’s now defunct 8bahn , where he began as a resident and went on to program monthly club nights and the occasional festival, he has carried that same spirit of curiosity and community into new contexts. Whether in the booth, behind the scenes, or digging through record bins, Lennie is always in search of something new - or old - to bring his philosophy to life on the dance floor.

Finding meaning is an exciting pursuit. One that opens doors, observes, imagines, dives in, before maybe creating something, or closing them again. No hard feelings, and much learning. Applied to music, such philosophy feeds an infinite curiosity that only our minds limit, with rules defined by proclaimed boundary setters. Girish’s artistic journey lies in breaking these rules, not compromising on what he feels, taking risks and giving place to spontenaity. 

The first time that we crossed Girish’s path was in Radio TNP’s former NDSM studio in 2021. Already, an eclectic selection and a vivid energy transpired. Years have passed since, dedicated to creating a new platform for underrepresented music with The Hague’s Future Intel collective. Pushing new sounds, fighting for culture, crafting events and continuously collecting music from all corners.

Challenging times gave place to new bloemings, energies channeling in the right direction and portals opening. Sometimes life forces compromise, moments where the ying and the yang dance in an unbalancing rhythm, to let place to renewed magic. Fresh off opening Draaimolen’s Pit stage back-to-back with DJ and Future Intel crew mate Zamba Jan, Girish steps up for Polychrome Radio. Always exploring, we can only expect the unexpected, and that’s the beauty of it.

Music is a language that helps us communicate when other barriers seem too high. Amsterdam based producer and DJ Crisp Sandwich has spent many years learning it, developing depth in its understanding, curiosity in its tools and creativity in its use.

Bastien’s work is a delicate craft, which explores sounds and rhythms, layers to enhance the experience and mixes sounds from a diverse set of sources. From techno to dub, drum n bass, juke and new school house, it is with impressive ease that they play records, synthesisers and perform vocals, connecting with listeners.

Very involved with music, Crisp Sandwich is also a regular maker on Operator radio, founding member of the newly (re)launched Radio weesper as well as co-producer of the incredible neo-classical live duo Bubble Bouillon with their partner Hundi. We simply love their craft.
