Endless Melancholy and BILYK are exploring a retro 80’s sound in their new single “Running.” 

The Ukrainian ambient project Endless Melancholy departed from their original sound by diving into the world of synthpop together with their long-time collaborator, singer-songwriter BILYK. 

Inspired by the dimensions of the 80’s pop sound, “Running” was written in two places - the Canadian Rockies and then-peaceful Ukraine. The song is about the search for one’s true self and an embracing of all the voices that have their home within us. 

The video creates spacey images with explorative environments where one is contemplating unknown objects with curiosity, openness and excitement. Created by Roman and Helena Hense, the video is itself a journey of self-exploration through yet-to-be-discovered worlds. 
Co-produced and mixed by Taras Blyzniuk at Loud Mouse Studios and mastered by Joao Carvalho Mastering, “Running” united old friends and new collaborators with the desire to bring all strangers home with us in an exploration of infinite creative possibilities.

About the track:
"I have a sweet spot in my heart for this song. White Lies is maybe the most archetypical Son Lux song on the record, to my ear. But lyrically, it feels different than anything we’ve done. Its initial flickers of life were fragments of recordings we made of Ian’s improvisations. The first was a tiny squeaking, rattling sound I discovered in one of the mic channels, which turned out to be his squeaking hi-hat pedal, combined with the sound of his keys on the floor next to his foot (I think!). A half year later, at the end of another take at another session, just before the engineer stopped recording, Ian threw his sticks down on his floor tom and started laughing. The gesture sounded amazing, so I grabbed that little piece of audio and it became an important aspect of the rhythmic texture of the song. A song emerged slowly from these kinds of unlikely, rather inauspicious seeds." - Ryan Lott

When Grails dropped their fifth studio album, Deep Politics in 2011, it was instantly hailed as a cult classic and became the moment when Grails truly cultivated a sound all their own. Six years later, they advance that sound with their most lush, expansive album of their inspired career, Chalice Hymnal.

Rather than pick up where they left off, Grails take the sky-high riff-based heaviness of their earlier albums and distill it into a nuanced, widescreen opus. The perennial influences of mid-20th century Western film scores, obscure library music, and psychedelic krautrock are indelibly imprinted, but Chalice Hymnal exudes an eerie patience in unfurling the many layers of its subtle details.

Produced by the band over the past five years, Chalice Hymnal bears some of the European psych and experimental hip-hop production techniques of founding members Alex Hall and Emil Amos' other group, Lilacs & Champagne. Amos' meditative metal band, Om, and longtime singer-songwriter project, Holy Sons, also naturally find their way into the Chalice cauldron. Rounding out their leaner line-up, cofounder Zak Riles (also of experimental kraut-psych trio, Watter) layers synths and programming into an electronic-prog hybrid that pushes Grails further into the deep end, displaying a profound resonance, both musically and emotionally. No one else sounds like Grails, and on Chalice Hymnal they sound more like themselves than ever before.

This track was the first thing that was born out of a new purchase of the GGD P4 kit and Neural DSP's Archetype Nolly. It's a far cry from what I usually do, but I had fun with it. Took about 3 hours to write and record, maybe another hour spent working on the mix.
