I've create a "live eurorack case", that hasn't seen much action lately. So - I decided to see if I could take it for a spin, create something and then "dress it up" in the daw. This is the result.

Pianos, drums, some strings and samples added - a lot of processing etc. (Waaaaay too much processing...)

While I know I need to exercise this case more - with this prompt, I finally got started ;)

This is a short re-tracing of the "disquiet junto's" of 2021. 

Last year, I tried sequencing really small snippets of renderings of former "juntos". This year, to try something different, I found one for each month of 2021, dived into the "daw" sourcecode, and tried to pick up some of what I still thought as interesting parts and just sequence them. It might not "stand alone" as a coherent piece - but, if nothing else, it gives me a quick nostalgic sum-up of some of the nice evenings I've had with the "disquiet junto"...

Every year, the "Disquiet Junto"  poses the same project, ever since the very first Junto project, back in January 2012: "Record the sound of ice in a glass and make something with it"

Here, I've recorded 3 icecubes tumbling down in a drinking glass - and then spent a couple of hours mangling, stretching, reverbing, reversing, delaying, eq'ing, deleting, restarting, re-recording, giving-up'ing, and then still posting...

...it's a great, but difficult, challenge to make something. This is, as is probably the easiest, an "ethereal" version of my experiments.

Inspired by this weeks Disquiet Junto prompt, I constructed this piece of music as a vehicle for a very, very simple hidden message - using a combination of the “German Method”, morse, cutting up with ciphers and, finally, the 70’ies “Reverse Backtrack” message.

The message itself is thus encoded in the notes being played, in the beat as morse-code (BD = short, SD=long) as well as in actual my own voice, obscured and reversed. Notes are cut up using Sound Toys Tremolator - and (most of) the instruments are using presets (sorry!), where the name contains letters from the message. On the reversed voices, a Sound Toys Crystallizer preset called “BackTrack Delay” is used to complete the confusion.

And the message? Well, inspired by Schumann encoding his own name as SCHA -  “Es” (E-flat), C, H (B-natural) and A - leaving out characters for which there are no notes),  my message is both an encoding of my own last name as well as a concept that is creeping up on me with worrying haste… “a g e”.

This piece is a response to the 550’th prompt from Disquiet Junto  - this time a collaboration between Tobias Reber from Musikfestival Bern.

I’ve taken four images, displaying the randomness in nature - boards from a deck, a flower, the sky and 3 pigeons on a roof, and enhanced, extracted and encoded random figures from it. (See the accompanying image). 

The resulting sequences of numbers are used either as rhythmical or pitch “notes” - and everything is scaled around A Super-Locrian scale.  Four tracks are thus constructed (theme, bass, pads and bd) around these encodings.

I’ve added small fx and extra “pulsing rhythms” for interest.

As a response to this weeks challenge, I used samples from an interview from McLuhan, citing his father (who keyed famous phrases like "the medium is the message/massage" and "global village"). 

I've tried to create something that ended up reminding me of a (hopefully) updated version of the 80'ies Hardcastle song "19" (which I, at the time, soon grew to loathe due to too frequent visits to the local disco, who just WOULD NOT STOP PLAYING IT....).

Anyways; It is more uptempo beat than my previous Disquiet responses - made to keep practicing that particular "muscle"!

It was created in Ableton with various Sinevibes, Native and Eventide plugins - as well as a few of my own samples and performances thrown in.

Found floating amongst the stars, initially though to be an alien satellite, a yalpian blackstone organ was found in 1972 by Major Tom & Eva. 

After several years of experiments, Professor Spleet Von Gingle finally succeeded in taping a few minutes of it's song, after which (she claims) it broke completely. 

Rumour has it, though, that pieces and parts as well as some of the oscillating blackstones has been seen on stage or in the studios of some of the biggest bands throughout the '70'ies and '80'ies.

This is part of the "disquiet junto" challenges (see more below).
For this months challenge,  choose 3 random instruments, I decided to do a quick “in the box” experiment. Amongst my, admittedly, too many plugins, I let google cast the dice. What I hadn’t foreseen was, of course, that my plugins are a mix of instruments and mixing/mastering tools… so I was given with the following three numbers: 15, 53 and 51 - giving me the following three plugins:

15 - Arturia Piano V2
53 - iZotope Stutter Edit
51 - iZotope Ozone 7 Vintage Tape

The title is an anagram of "more random" - but feels somehow relevant to the result...

This was an old experiment with some minimal house - where I, in response to this weeks Disquiet Junto challenge, took a serious dive in tempo compared to the original, shaved off a lot of stuff, put in a few experimental bleeps - which gave everything a very dubby feeling, I think. The original (called "Old House"), is maybe 10 years old...

This track is based on an old industrial loop I made a while ago - but sped up considerably in response to this weeks “Disquiet Junto” challenge. I’ve build a new arrangement around the track and even, just to try it out, speed up the piece by a total of 7bpm during the short run of the track. 

It’s primarily “in the box”, with a few field / modular samples thrown in. Big up to Output’s Exhale plugin in this one, by the way.

This is a response to the Disquiet Junto challenge "Front Page"; a small sentence is taken from a headline (CNN; France just had its hottest day ever recorded!) and mangled... 

I've created a "voice avatar" at LyreBird, and had that AI voice (that to me sounds like a digital ghost of myself) read a single line of the news bit. Then it has been mangled and a few extra sounds added. It's a short piece. But... an important subject.
