Balancing ambient sound design alongside warm organic techno and ripples of delicate electronics; British-born, Canadian-based, Grammy-nominated composer, producer, and musical director @Matt-Robertson is set to release his new album ‘Enveleau’. It follows his warmly received ‘In Echelon‘ (2016) and ‘Entology’ (2018) albums, described as “symphonic electronica and leftfield techno that’s cinematic in scale” (Mixmag), “evocative, expansive, and original” (Electronic Sound), “magnificent...wild, electronic sound” (The Line Of Best Fit) and “Nils Frahm’s modern classical meets Jon Hopkins’ grainy techno” (MOJO).

“I love how the sonics of some records immediately put the listener in a comfortable space - just from the sound of an opening chord, you can be placed in a space and time. I am trying to achieve something similar to this on ‘Enveleau’, really concentrating on what the sounds make you feel, as a separate thing to what the harmony and the pitch make you feel. I’ve used a lot of different recordings I made outside, including natural textures wrapped into the drum sounds. It gives the record a sense of place.”

“Enveleau is a word I am taking to mean a sense of envelopment in your surroundings, and trying to take some comfort in that. In a sense, gratitude. The name also has a lot to do with water and how it flows along the easiest path. 2020 was a really challenging year for everyone. I think I found a sense of ease by concentrating on my family and getting outside if I could. The cover is a photo of an area near where I live, and it really captures a sense of the stillness that I have been trying to find within the past year.”

Slumber Sessions: MoonPhase

Music For Dreams proudly present the first single from LIPS LIPS LIPS’ forthcoming debut album. In All Eternity comes out Jan 15th and the album, which is titled Life Is Pretty Surreal is set for summer 2021.
Behind Lips Lips Lips is Danish musician, electronic producer and songwriter Søren Lykke Juul (previously Indians and Søren Juul, both on 4AD).
This first single, In All Eternity, was written in 2015 on piano. It’s a love song that seems arrested in a state of estranged wonder or bittersweet bliss. Grand piano stabs rise like skyscrapers in autumnal vistas, while the metronomic beat float around with swirling strings.
With the debut album, Lips Lips Lips erects an ambitious project of lush and melodic electronic structures around hypnotic vocals. The music is yearning and melancholic yet warm and hopeful. Rarefied yet expansive. Cerebral yet wired with pop charm.
An essential difference from Juul’s previous work here has been the sense of ease and spontaneity with which the creative processes have flowed. According to Juul, this new sort of feet-on-the-ground freedom has helped develop a more physical side to his music. While he hasn’t totally jettisoned the ethereal or spiritual qualities of earlier days, Lips Lips Lips represents a much more pronounced rhythmic vision, materialized at the hands of Aaron Coyes (Peaking Lights), whose well-accomplished dub-engineering is layered deep into the texture of the album.
All recording on the album was carried out during a week-long refuge in co-producer Frederik Nordsø’s cabin in Sweden. The team included Juul, Nordsø, Coyes and label head and co-producer Kenneth Bager.
