The first vinyl release from Doyenne Books via Boomkat Editions arrives as an anthology of love song covers - release date: 11th April 2024.

Taking its name from the etymology behind the well known myth of ‘Aphrodite’, meaning: “sea-foam", "risen from the foam" - the fifth release from Doyenne brings together friends, lovers and the broken-hearted under one premise. The commission was to make a ‘love song cover’, in which each artist has had free reign in the interpretation of ‘love’ as well as the style and rendition of their favourite musical pieces on love: Agape (unconditional love), unrequited love, philautia (self love), lost love, mania (obsessive love).

From bygone sea shanties to 90s r’n’b, post-punk, jazz greats, indie pop and 19th century classical, Doyenne label mates Christina Vantzou, Susu Laroche, and Spivak, are joined by a diverse cast of friends new and old. Alex Zhang Hungtai’s deconstructed cover of Sinatra sits beside Aya’s darkened Lovesong, whilst Claire Rousay, Wild Terrier Orchestra’s Jay Glass Dubs and Dania Shihab of Paralaxe Editions take on soft vocal covers of iconic alt bands. Manchester’s Teresa Winter does British folk, and South Korean duo Salamanda rework Debussy.

TANK Mix: Li Yilei

Long standing NTS DJ's and curators Jack Rollo and Elaine Tierney, commonly known as Time Is Away, step up next for the 47th edition of the Off The Record mix series. Having been recognised for their vast knowledge of folk, esoteric and eclectic sounds which is displayed in their curated compilations for labels like A Colourful Storm and Efficient Space - they have also been known to dig deep into more clubbier sounds like house, rare leftfield and DIY electronics. For their mix Jack and Elaine focus more on the latter but bringing tracks that would pay homage to more melodic sounds. We had a brief chat with Time Is Away about the mix and what they have coming up.

Magnus Fiskesjo talks about Uyghur refugees in Thailand that have already spent ten years in prison. Thailand must decide whether or not to send them back to China, where the risk of torture or execution is high.

Update since the show aired: On Feb. 27, 2025, Thailand deported over forty Uyghur refugees to China, despite a pending court hearing for next month, which was set aside and was perhaps a lie to begin with. The shameful deportation was done under the cover of night, in buses with black-out windows, to prevent the press from seeing the prisoners [https://prachataienglish.com/node/11322]. A Chinese plane flew them direct from Bangkok to Kashgar in the Uyghur region, where the concentration camps now await them. 
Thailand has now violated both the UN convention on torture, which it signed, and the principle of non-refoulement, sending refugees in harm's way. Thailand's betrayal of human rights also overrides the Thai politicians and lawyers and others who tried to protest, and argued that refugees had suffered enough, languishing in Thai jails for over ten years, with five dying, including two children. It is obvious it was done only to obey China, where state media celebrated getting their hands on the refugees.

These recordings comprise a form of audio-linguistic documentation of subjective experience and the perceived environment. Intricate details of clothing or the way a garment is worn become filters for understanding the city and the interactions that occur within it. Language is used to underscore the subjectivity of dress and ways of perceiving intimacy and distance between self and the outside world.

The Beijing series was recorded with a homemade binaural microphone set, 'worn' clipped to the shoulders during recording. For best binaural quality, please listen with headphones.
