Marquisha Lawrence Scott, Ph.D became pregnant with her daughter at the height of the pandemic two months after she and her husband decided they were ready to expand their family of two. But after what she describes as an "easeful" pregnancy and being readmitted to the hospital a week after having her daughter due to postpartum preeclampsia, Marquisha faced a new challenge: postpartum depression and anxiety.

Two years prior to becoming pregnant, India listened as her cousin shared her own battle with postpartum depression. This conversation became vital in India's ability to identify the shift in her mood shortly after the birth of her daughter and allowed her to speak up confidently to receive help. Support, to India, is necessary part of healing.

Postpartum Depression (PPD) can be a very difficult time in a new mom's life. For my practicum research for the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism, I've interviewed a group of mothers that have experienced postpartum depression to hear their first-person account of what that chapter in their motherhood journey was like. These stories have been collected and shared to help others who may be experiencing PPD feel less alone and also to give people who are unfamiliar with the condition a glimpse into an often unspoken reality.
