New Order - Truth (1980)

DJs Oz and Mike Halloran on San Diego's 91X FM discuss the about-to-be-released Depeche Mode album 'Violator' and premiere tracks off the record in March 1990. They reveal the tracklist, describe the artwork and liner notes from the just-obtained CD, then play "World In My Eyes," "Policy of Truth" and "Halo" (actual songs omitted here). At the end, they talk to a record label rep who announces the soon-to-be-infamous in-store appearance at the Wherehouse in Los Angeles on March 20, 1990 ("We're expecting total melee outside," Halloran predicts, accurately). 

Recorded on a TDK D-90 cassette and stored in a Vans shoebox for the subsequent 25 years.

Premiere of Depeche Mode 'Violator' on San Diego's 91X (March 1990)

This Friday marks the 25th anniversary of the release of Depeche Mode's landmark 'Violator' album, and it's also the anniversary of the band's infamous in-store at a Wherehouse record store in Los Angeles. To mark the occasion, here is about 7 minutes of KROQ's broadcast that night, featuring Richard Blade interviewing the members of the band about the album and their touring plans.  This was recorded off the radio on a TDK D-90 cassette and stored in a Vans shoebox for the subsequent 25 years.

Here is the composer performing his own composition solo. Hryhory Kytasty (1907-1984) had 2 solo releases and this is found on the second release from 1966. The composer had arranged this song as a solo with choir also and has been performed worldwide.  The picture is the property of his student Marko Farion, and was taken at Farion's house (c.1980)

This was recorded live during the recital following the Bandura Workshop held in Winnipeg, July 1981.  The workshop was run by Viktor Kytasty, Julian Kytasty and Marko Farion.  Instructors Julian (tenor) and Marko (bass) perform an ancient folk song about a grave mound in the field, with a young Brian Cherwick (2nd tenor), a novice to the bandura that year.  Since, then Brian had studied music, both in Canada and Ukraine and is a master of many Ukrainian folk instruments.  He is the frontman to the band the Kubasonics.

Been blogging, music sharing, etc. for a while now (see blog under this name) & DJing since 1982. I like all kinds of music.

Most of my playlists are not organized & just hold songs I'm interested in, many of which I haven't listened to yet. The "freeform current listening" playlist is as it says & will be updated regularly. Many of my reposts were unintentional, they were just random tracks I was trying to add to a playlist using my phone & I've got clumsy fingers.

When Marko Farion was an undergraduate at CWRU (1980-1984) in Cleveland, he was involved with WRUW 91.1 FM, the University's radio station, as a public affairs programmer, disc jockey and Program Director.  He started as a representative of the Ukranian Student Organization hosting the public affairs program "Free Ukraine" and then began to DJ the 2 hour time slot before "F.U.", a show he named "Pree Ukraine" -  featuring new music - which today is termed Big/Retro 80's or New/1st Wave music.  Here you will find his promos and some rarities that may be difficult to find today...
