The lyrics regarding a fly buzzing around an incandescent are a tongue-and-cheek reference to The Exorcist movie.  :)  There's a balance that we all try to maintain; some fail, some exceed,  but the vast majority of us live in the middle ground, the grey.

Another Friday night sitting as it were, but this time developed over a little time. I played this for my wife and she said it made her think of blue fireflies in the night and hence the image. Took a while to find the first Fm/C/C7 progression then I just carried on from there. Although I thought about adding complexity in the end I decided that less was more in this case. 

The piano piece itself is not very difficult to play, but as I do not own a Steinway Grand the challenge was finding a digital instrument that did the trick in terms of tone. I started out with my Korg SV-1, even changed the keyboard bed but there was something about the sharpness of the high keys (always been an issue on the Korg) that just didn’t sound right. I then tried the Ravenskraft VST, highly recommended in reviews, and found that the overall sound was too dull for my liking.  After years of thinking (not about this piece) this prompted me to finally bring a Nord Stage 3 home. Initially I was disappointed in the piano engine but after a while I learned to set it up to my liking as well as got used to the feel of a different keyboard. This particular piano is the fully mapped Royal Grand 3D with a little bit of reverb and the bass turned down a smidgen. The violin is also a native Nord sample with some delay.

It also turns out that bouncing a pure unprocessed piano track from Logic Pro X sounds a lot better than trying to improve it with the various algorithms in Izotope Ozone.

This is a single take piano performance without any edits.

This is an old song we wrote a long time ago but never released, due to not being able to find the correct sound we wanted to bring to the song.   Durge came up with the beautiful angelic Ukulele sound and it took the rhythm of the song to another level.   The song is about an Island girl willing her beloved back to her, singing his name and her words of love on a moonlit wind across the seas where he is on a boat, making his living.. and he in turn wills himself back to her as well..   but for now, they see each other in their dreams..  and so the song, is a wish on the heart of two star crossed lovers, and fate will bring them back to each other as the tides turn.

Ever since my personal discovery of the writings and musings of Terence McKenna in the mid 90’s I have been both fascinated & amused by a hypothesis of his that some have referred to as: The Stoned Ape Theory.

The Stoned Ape Theory: Pseudoscience or Psychedelic Origin of Modern Man?

Did early humans accelerate evolution by tripping balls on psychedelic mushrooms? One psychonaut ethnobiologist says: absolutely.

Let’s set the scene: 100,000 years ago, in the age before recorded history, our early hominid ancestors started abandoning the forests and traveling across savannahs. As they foraged in new environments, they began evolving faster, cleverer brains that eventually tripled in size. How did they accomplish this? One theory suggests that they unknowingly added psilocybin to their diet and tripped their way to high-level consciousness. 

The Stoned Ape Theory is a hypothesis by one of America’s most influential psychonauts, Terence McKenna. With knowledge of ecology, conservation, and shamanism, McKenna united his interests in his study of psychedelics. McKenna earned his degrees from the University of California-Berkeley’s Tussman Experimental College, and his extensive writings served as some of the West’s first exposure to the psychedelics DMT and ayahuasca. 

Though he died in 2000, McKenna’s lifetime of advocating for the exploration of altered states of mind still influences modern psychonauts today. The Stoned Ape Theory is only one way in which he attempted to shift the world’s view of psychedelics.

I spent seventeen long winters in Stockholm. Funnily enough the most challenging season to me was always spring with all the false starts and long hiatuses. By the time it’s May and you can reasonably expect some warmish weather (defined as over 50F) it inevitably snows and destroys your planned weekend bike ride, or maybe you just have to keep your down jacket in the closet a few more weeks and leave your lighter clothes at the back of the closet. Of course, spring is the beginning of a period of more fun and games. Hopefully you can hear the pull between spring trying to break through and winter lingering on in this music.

This is a performance with no post recording edits. It is entirely in Gm except for 1 note intended to denote a dissonant interruption. I wonder who can locate that B.

Clarinet was borrowed from my sister for summer practice. Reed & keywork managing is difficult for a beginner, & home cohabitance was set on serious risk, but with painful effort I got something presentable, or so I hope, as not willing to repeat soon...
