The Eclectic Collective -- composition
 
This song started with JJ during one of his late Saturday night composition sessions, where he came up with the idea on his synth. He laid down some great organ and electric piano for the rest of us to play with. Ken was first up with his lively, raucous drums. He and Josh did their back and forth with the rhythm section until it was solid, though. Then Stephen laid in his dirty, rawkin' rhythm guitar to give it an extra foundation. Finally, Tez put the icing on the cake with his monster soloing throughout. 
  Of course, every great song needs a great producer. In this case, Tez did the honors in a very expert manner. We wanted Stephen (Texmex Shaman) on this, too, of course, but he is just now getting settled into his new abode, and was in flux while we were making this one. He'll be back with The Eclectic Collective next week, though. 
  This is an example of Eclectic Collective teamwork. It came together relatively quickly, which means we were all having fun doing it. We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed creating it.

This vinyl mix is very special to me. It brings together several important and distinct periods and moments of my life related to music, which I’m telling shortly about further. It’s about kindness and emotion, about keeping our sanity during 1000+ days of the ongoing full-scale war.

Period: Late 90s/early 2000s. Digweed, Sasha, Nick Warren, Cattaneo, Pole Folder, Satoshi Tomiie, and Renaissance and Global Underground compilations listened to death.

Moment: December 2016, Brave Factory—not yet the large-scale festival it is today, but a party on the two Closer club floors. Third Floor, Jane Fitz, Function-One, and a mind blown to pieces by what sound can do to you.

Stage: A phase that has began 4 years ago when I started collecting vinyl and playing music myself. Over these 4 years, I’ve dreamed of recording something like this. The tracklist chronology in some sense symbolizes the evolution of my personal taste—from the old classic sound to the freshly baked releases in the second half of the mix ending with a return to the classics.

Sorrow is my own yard
where the new grass
flames as it has flamed
often before, but not
with the cold fire
that closes round me this year.
Thirty-five years
I lived with my husband.
The plum tree is white today
with masses of flowers.
Masses of flowers
load the cherry branches
and color some bushes
yellow and some red,
but the grief in my heart
is stronger than they,
for though they were my joy
formerly, today I notice them
and turn away forgetting.
Today my son told me
that in the meadows,
at the edge of the heavy woods
in the distance, he saw
trees of white flowers.
I feel that I would like
to go there

A flicker in the darkness—a momentary pause, suspended between longing and release. "Sky’s Lantern" is a delicate reflection on what has been lost, a gentle descent into the aching sadness that lingers even after the storm. Where the arrogance of "Dandelion" once held sway, here, vulnerability returns, soft yet unrelenting. The song draws the listener into a mystical forest at midnight, where the solitude of the heart mirrors the isolation of the trees, and time itself seems to stand still. At the centre of this glade, where the world feels impossibly still, a sliver of light breaks through the dense canopy, casting a glow that is more than just the reflection of stars or moon—here, the universe itself seems to unfold, revealing both the infinite and the intimate.

In this space, memories float like fragile lights in the distance—distant, beautiful, and forever just out of reach. The lantern, suspended in the night sky, is not a beacon of hope, but a void—a quiet, ever-present reminder of the unknown. It whispers that even in the depths of grief, there are no clear paths, only questions and the silence that lingers after.

“Sky’s Lantern” is the moment when pride gives way to vulnerability, where the heart is still torn between what was and what will never be, yet still drifts forward, unsure, carried by the pull of something that may never be understood.
