Downplay is proud to welcome South West production duo Earthnut to the label with their brand new release, ‘Protosynthesis’.

‘Hollow Man’ rolls out on sprightly keys and chopped beats before unfolding into a pitch perfect UKG shuffler that manages to pack oscillating chords, sugar sweet female vocals, punchy bass and a cheeky sample that will raise a wry smile, all into one sublime track.

‘Knucklethump’ provides an even smoother mood to it’s predecessor with a jazzed-out top-line and bumpy percussion that is precision-tooled to get waists winding, before expanding even further in it’s final third with some seriously spicy creative touches to keep the dancefloor jumping.

‘Gunker’ is likely to be the track that really open some ears though, with it’s left-field assimilation of the UKG template into something utterly new but captivating. Reminiscent of the Compost-era broken beat sound, but manipulated into something closer to a subtle dub techno vibe, it defies labeling but is indicative of creative minds reaching their full potential as artists.

Earthnut - Gunker (DWN030)

Liverpudlian producer Lucent joins forces with legendary Bristolian MC Buggsy for a blistering debut on Durkle Disco.

With past releases for Trouble & Bass, Tumble Audio, 877 and Hot Cakes, Lucent has already turned plenty of heads in both the UK Funky and wider Bass Music worlds.

This inaugural effort for Durkle Disco continues that theme, drawing elements from both sounds with hard carnival-ready drums, lazer-cut bleeps, floor-shaking bass and a touch of early-rave nostalgia courtesy of a signature vocal sample from The Ratpack’s MC Everson Allen.

As is standard for a Durkle Disco release, an MC vocal takes centre stage - and Lucent goes high, drafting in legendary Bristol MC and fellow Durkle debutant, Buggsy.

From tearing up the seminal Sidewinder raves as a teen, to working with the cream of his hometown’s world-renowned electronic music scenes and, most recently, contributing a version of Jammz & Jack Dat’s notorious ‘French Montana Riddim’; Buggsy is a true grime original. His trademark rapid-fire flow lights up Lucent’s instrumental, breaking down the origins of the Bristol grime scene he helped birth.

An already powerful combination is rounded off with a monster remix from UKG royalty Zed Bias, returning to Durkle for the first time since his 2014 remix of Lamont’s ‘Far Away’. His swinging 2-step flip takes ‘Originate’ to a deeper, darker place, with an outrageous rumbling baseline ensuring none of the raucous energy of the original is lost.
