After D.Y.A's and Kalyma's collaboration for Solide's eights catalogue number, latter returns solo for the label's latest release, 'Rites EP', a three tracker consisting of two original cuts and a remix. In traditional Kalyma manner and part of his trademark sound the Berlin based producer delivers an excessive drum-influenced EP opener, 'Rites', that signifies its dance floor potential within the first minute and teases with an incisive chord which marks the introduction of the track's coming in subtle key-melody. As the track continues Kalyma sprinkles with accentuated synth-chords that adapt to the overall harmonies and set new auditory stimuli before the track enfolds its full peak-time potential. Kalyma's second cut, 'Red Man Calypso', comes in an original version and a Whitesquare remix. As the original highlights whizzling and sizzling synth pads that create late summer esthetics over a proper house bassline, Whitesquare's remix approach concentrates on the low frequencies as the Italian producer implements a reduced bassline smoothly supporting the synth-chords which he adapted from the original. Due to the reduction the remix depicts a multi-layered almost paradox atmosphere buoyant and joyful on the one side, dark and desperate on the other the listener is torn between but never lost as the beauty and life-affirming vibe prevails.

With his latest release 'Yaiza' on Solide Marc travels geographically and musically to southern regions for two reasons: 'Yaiza' is the southernmost township in Lanzarote and the identitically named track represents Kalyma's preference for rhythmical- and synth-driven music that surely is connected to the warmth of the aforementioned surrounding. 'Yaiza' portrays the picture of a rural landscape which is filled with little life depicted by the marching in bass line in the beginning of the track. But as soon as the lead-synth sets in the imagined place turns into a lively gathering that vanishes into thin air when the bass line stops. Nandu's remix of 'Yaiza' emphasizes the deepness of the original's synth-melody and creates a rather minimalistic version that manages to keep the original's vibe but leads the track into a darker musical direction.  'Yaiza' is one track, shown from two different perspectives and taking you on several musical journeys!

Sophie Lloyd produced ‘Calling Out’ in a dreary January as an antidote to the pervading doom and gloom of the news, summoning the power of the most joy-filled sound of all, gospel. The track radiates all the live atmosphere of gospel worship in mid flow, with soul trio Dames Brown bringing the authenticity. The singers’ unbridled energy and vocal power is harnessed perfectly, supported by Sophie’s production that glows with the uplifting warmth of live instrumentation. Following a 7” release which sold through continuously due to huge demand, this digital release fills the ‘Calling Out' void ahead of a remix package coming soon.

Exclusive Pablo Fierro 'Timanfaya'

Cradled with rhythm Canary Island born and currently in Madrid living DJ and producer  Pablo Fierro is a mainstay of the rather percussively influenced music in the electronic music scene. With releases on Innervisions' renowned 'Secret Weapons' compilation the bustling artists has left quite an impression and paved the way for following releases on Suol or RISE. For the latter Pablo remixed Floyd Lavine's track 'Masala', which became an instant summer anthem in 2017. This year Pablo continues his personal rise with his 'Timanfaya EP' on Munich based label Compost. The EP's title track starts Pablo-style, meaning the Madrilenian builds up the track with strong and various percussions preparing the momentum when a Mediterranean influenced synth-melody makes its first appearance and in the following is accompanied by a second one that marks the track's peak. Shortly before the release of Pablo Fierro's EP Torture the Artist had the chance to catch up and speak to the artist about his connection to the 'Timanfaya National Park', his move to Madrid and other topics.

Family NAME regulars Peo Watson and Mainro team up again on the 22nd NAME festival imprint release. Their collaboration has proved in the past to be brilliant, on remixes as original stuff. Here, the guys have cooked what is maybe their most techno work to this day, together as on their respective solo projects. From the rolling groove of Chardon Mary, the pair subtly reveals pressure leads and smothered voice, for a 6 minutes four to the floor trip, that evokes instantly a timeless and classic weapon.

On the remix side, rising talent Lazaros (already heard on Kompakt affiliated label KX, among other), keeps the original tension at his highest with a strong, magnetic and accurate techno interpretation.

Blac, Lille based producer and Family NAME fellow closes the package with a remix gathering deep melodic vibes and seminal Detroit house in one sweet and shiny piece.

In comparison, “As Above So Below” on the flipside is adding a fair amount of emphasis. It unfolds in a dry and dense sounding beat-architecture that’s suspense-packed with shaker sounds and subtextual field recordings. Most certainly, a slip-proof ground for this tune’s centre-piece, a scale-riding synthbass sparking an almost anthemic trigger for floor-ecstasy. While details like subtle reverberating tapping and sparkling ambient textures sound like recorded deep down in a dripstone cave, the overall energetic layout pushes relentlessly to the heights of peaktime-grandeur. There you have it: “As Above So Below” - this tune works on every level.

Returning to Sudbeat after his amazing debut last year is Memory with a dynamite two-tracker remixed by Kevin Di Serna. 

Argentinian-born Matias Gonzalez aka Memory began his musical journey in balmy Buenos Aires before moving to Italy several years ago. His dance floor-focused grooves and ear for melody have found favour with a growing list of music lovers and high profile fans including Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren and other members of the progressive posse. Given the high quality of his sound, it won’t be long before Memory is on everybody’s lips. 

After something of a hiatus, the opening track, ‘Surrender’ continues from where the Dysnomia EP left off: glacial melodies and warm summery grooves greet us with joyful self awareness. Subtly tribal in nature the gallop of the percussion sections drive the track forward with consummate ease, never in a rush, never at a loss. 

The second original, ‘Hygee’ intensifies the energy with a deep, growling low-end fury. Darkly satisfying, Bladerunner-esque sweeps keep things mysterious as the groove grows with layers of percussive menace, leading to a glorious payoff of epic proportions. On remix duties, self-confessed superfan, Kevin Di Serna  gives ‘Surrender’ a dirtier, bass-led rerub with devastating results.
