SSOH

“The only limits are those you create yourself.”

In 1995, deep in the vibrant, pumping heart of Paris, French DJ and producer Claude Monnet put into place the beginnings of now world-renowned label SSOH. Designed to be a ‘salon’ of ground-breaking, quality dance music, from the start there were to be no finite lines; no boundaries that could not be crossed through the expression of music. As long as a track could stand firm by itself, expressing quality, individuality and passion, it would find a home in the SSOH stable. Jazz, techno, house, deep house, Afro beat, Afro Latin and more, were all strains that ran thick through productions leaving SSOH from its very earliest of days.

Fast forward to 2011 and today SSOH is recognized as one of the core labels for pure, unadulterated electronic beats. With groove as its defining factor and rhythm its heart beat, release after release from artists such as Rodriguez Jr, Dimitri From Paris, Franck Roger, Rocco, Art of Tones, Ludovic Lorca, DJ Gregory, Julien Jabre, Abicah Soul, Pastaboys, Bangana, Claude Monnet himself and more, flow out; lighting up dance floors and radio waves and igniting the touch paper of inspiration for younger producers coming up through the ranks.

Not just singles come from SSOH; conceptual ideas like the Back 2 Fundamentals movement are also part of the creative process. Bringing the focus squarely back to the basic principles of funk and dance, Back 2 Fundamentals proved to be an explosion of epic quality on its first installment. Drawing on the wealth of underground house talent and the history of the French electronic movement, The French ‘Touche’ was an unqualified success, celebrating urban lifestyle, street culture and live performance as well as music. 2012 will see Claude release Back 2 Fundamentals: The Nouvelle Vague – a second installment that concentrates on the future of the underground and fresh Techno artists who bring new dynamics to the scene.

Whether it’s compilations, concepts, EPs or single releases, SSOH stands as a flag bearer for undeniable quality, uncompromising artistic control and a heart-felt understanding for the dynamics and possibilities of the dance floor. After a quarter of a century, something almost unheard of for any independent electronic labels, SSOH continues to be the benchmark for many pretenders to the throne of house.

In a basement music-making studio in the south of England sit a bunch of machines. A Moog System 15, a Juno 106, classic Roland TR-808, TB-303 and TR-909s, an Emu SP1200, a Sequential Circuits Prophet 5, Akai MPC, a Mini-Moog… these machines have been some of the foundation hardware for electronic music over the years.

But these machines can’t make music by themselves. Despite all the hype about artificial intelligence (AI) and robots, these machines need somebody to collaborate with — a human — to draw out their soul and funk.

We’ve been fascinated by machine music since the second half of the 20th century, and electronic music has been powered by the ever-developing automation of new technology. “I’ve collected these machines for a long time now, and each one has a story,” says uber-producer Steve Mac, owner of all these machines. “Every time I buy a new one, the rule is that I have to make a track with it.”

The variety of people who drop by to play on these machines are what make the music coming out of this studio so diverse. Whether it’s house music legends like Marshall Jefferson or Danny Rampling swinging by, or cult Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh laying down some vocals on a German/Scottish kosmische disco ditty; a session with dubwise breakbeat rave act Genaside II to making a track with unknown guitar n’ bass whizkid Scott Booth; from working with young house hotshots Cousn from Bristol to some songs with a Brazilian band Steve met in the pub — these machines need humans to collaborate with. They can’t do it themselves.

The above-mentioned Brazilian band member Rafael Berrio provided the impetus for ‘Martina’, a Balearic Brazilian love story that’s the first single from Steve’s new project. It’s backed by a melodic breakbeat piece that also utilises those Brazilian vibes. “I want to make music from the heart,” says Steve. “It’s the interaction of people and machines that I’m really fascinated with.”

Each of these machines is a feat of engineering. Machines like these have created countless classic electronic music cuts, and lately Steve has been adding to that cannon — with a slew of tracks ready to go. The electricity is on. The motor is running. Are you ready for the sound of These Machines?

Roaming Manchester’s then infinite number of record shops is where Dave Muirhead (originally from Scotland) and Kirk Shiels first met over 10 years ago. 

They joined forces in the studio in late 2008 where their drive & desire to produce music has progressed them to the level they're at today, with their own distinctive sound and style which has proven to be a big hit on dance floors the world over. 

2009 was a milestone year for the pair that saw the ThreeSixty name grow with numerous chart entries and some amazing remix opportunities which gained widespread acclaim such as the No. 1 Beatport smash 'You Might Hear Nothing' by Slovenian Techno legend Umek and ‘Vibrations’ by Toolroom Records’ own Chris Special.

They boast their own impressive list of artists who have remixed them such as RAMON TAPIA, MATTEO DI MARR, QUIVVER, SONNY WHARTON, BEN CODA, JASON TAYLOR, VLADA ASANIN, JACEO and Brazilian DJ/Producers RODRIGO CARREIRA & KOOTECH.

2010 saw the duo have various releases on TOOLROOM RECORDS, FUNK FARM, DEFECTED, 303LOVERS, MAR 186, DATAWORX, STEREO PRODUCTIONS, WHARTONE RECORDS, SOULMAN MUSIC, BINARY 404, INTOXICATE DIGITAL, SOLARSCAPE MUSIC, KOMPRESSOR, FORENSIC, HAREM, BAROQUE & BLU MUSIC. Their forthcoming tracks include releases on TOOLROOM RECORDS, DEFINITIVE RECORDS, HOTFINGERS, INCORRECT MUSIC and Funkagenda’s new FUNK FARM imprint that started off with a remix of his own long awaited dance floor monster ‘Astana’, which has caused a storm around the globe.   

In September 2010 they set up their own imprint Maquina Music along side fellow production partners Dirty Harris & Jason Taylor. The quality and consistency of each track released has gained the label huge support from who’s who in the industry. For those who like their Tech House a little deeper they’ve catered for that too with sub-label Maquina Deep.

The aforementioned Toolroom Knight DJ/Producer Funkagenda recently named ThreeSixty amongst his 'Ones to Watch' in Britain's Next Generation of Dance Stars on Beatportal and Ministry Of Sound interviews. He showed further support by licensing their tracks ‘Kore’ & ‘Cruise Control’ to his 'Toolroom Knights' Compilation. ‘Cruise Control’ also made an appearance on Ministry of Sound’s ‘The Underground 2010’ mixed by Afrojack & Bass Kleph as well their remix being on a Defected compilation.

As well as a license to Fedde Le Grand & Funkerman's highly successful 'Flamingo Nights Volume One', they've written exclusive track ‘Invader’ for Toolroom Records featuring rising star Chris Special and ‘Access’ collaborated on with Hauswerks for Sonny Wharton’s 'Exploring…UK' compilation, released by Baroque Records.

With 2 successful Brazil tours and sell out shows at Sankey's in Manchester (DJ Mag's recently named 'Best Club in the World') under their belt, and with forthcoming gigs in Ibiza, Germany, USA. India, Asia, Israel and the UK already in the pipeline over the coming months, ThreeSixty are firmly in demand for 2011 and are not to be missed as one of the fastest rising artists on the scene today.


Strictly Rhythm Records is house music.  Since 1989 the legendary New York label not only put out records by almost every name in the game, but it also defined house music throughout the 1990s with Erick Morillo, Todd Terry, Louie Vega, Kenny Dope, Armand Van Helden, DJ Pierre, Roger Sanchez, Josh Wink, Ultra Naté and Barbara Tucker.  As well as keeping the underground stoked with a steady supply of club grooves, the label also delivered a stream of crossover hits with Reel 2 Real’s “I Like To Move It”, Ultra Naté’s “Free”, Wamdue Project’s “King Of My Castle” and Wink’s “Higher State Of Consciousness”.  

Relaunched in 2007 after a five year break following a short-lived venture with Warner Music, Strictly Rhythm did what no dance label had ever done: successfully re-launch itself.  The label made many of its classic releases available on digital download for the first time and signed new productions from the likes of Quentin Harris, Osunlade, Bingo Players Vs Chocolate Puma, Dennis Ferrer, Michel Cleis, Dirty South and Bob Sinclar.  
Always an innovator, the label that invented the 12” white label and put out the first ever commercially released DJ Mix CD in 1993 (The Tony Humphries Strictly Rhythm Mix) is still at the cutting edge, finding and promoting the best in house music.
