Martial artist and Hollywood actor Bruce Lee passed away a mere month before the release of his breakthrough Gung Fu film Enter the Dragon. Easily dismissed as a remake of Doctor No that rehashed a famous scene from Orson Welles’ The Lady From Shanghai, Enter the Dragon has several puzzling loopholes neither the screenwriter, editor, or director could fix. However, this Hong Kong production cashed in on Lee’s California Connections, his personalized style of Jeet Kune Do, and Lee’s absolute determination to finally make a 'western' film his way. Join Mike White of the Projection Booth Podcast as we go scene by scene and discuss how a forgone tragedy turned into not only the film Bruce Lee is most remembered for, but the seminal martial arts movie for an entire generation.

After a brief hiatus, The Projection Booth returns with a discussion of John Woo's A Better Tomorrow (1986). The film is seen as a hallmark of the “heroic bloodshed” subgenre of action films, doing for gunplay what a generation of Hong Kong films had done with swords.

The film tells the tale of Ho (Ti Lung), a criminal whose younger brother, Kit (Leslie Cheung), is a police officer. He's betrayed by a fellow gangster (Waise Lee) and sent up the river. When he returns to Hong Kong he wants to stay on the right side of the law which is more difficult than it should be.

The film speaks to loyalty, brotherhood, and put Chow Yun-Fat on the map as a bankable action star.

Cinema Junkie's Beth Accomando and Mike wax fondly about the glory days of HK Cinema, twin brothers, strange sequels, and the true colors of a hero.

A Better Tomorrow (1986)

Directed by Marco Brambilla and produced by Joel Silver, the Demolition Man (1993) stars Sylvester Stallone as hot shot supercop John Spartan. When he's set up to look like a mass murderer by his nemesis Simon Phoenix (Wesley Snipes), the two are sent to cryo-prison where they’re put on ice until the distant future year of 2032 where Phoenix breaks out of jail and the namby pamby cops of the future have no idea how to handle him. Of course, it's up to John Spartan to bring Simon Phoenix to justice again.

Stallone superfan Professor Laura Helen Marks and Outside the Cinema's Chris Bricklemyer join Mike to discuss this disarmingly charming sci-fi action film. Guests include three of the many writers of the film from original scribe Peter M. Lenkov to Fred Dekker to Daniel Waters. We also hear from the incredible production designer David L. Snyder.
