Camilo’s super-eclecticism makes this mix something special as he flits from genre to genre, language to language, making the world of music the ingredients for a heady, relaxing & delicious cocktail.. What up Idle Cellars fam? We’re back with another stellar new mix for your spring-into-summer fun, so pop a tasty bottle and get horizontal! Once again we’re proud to give you a mix from some of the world’s best selectors and this month showcases another favorite - it’s Brooklyn’s JKriv! We met Jason while he was holding down basslines for incredible acoustic House band Tortured Soul, which he followed swiftly by a stint in NYC disco-obsessed group Escort (amazing!), then linking up with Aaron Dae to create the influential Razor-N-Tape label empire! Since then the man has been living the disco dream, traveling the world playing tunes, making some fantastic music (check out his groovy and soothing Within EP) and opening the RNT record shop in addition to being a wonderful human being. 

He’s hooked us up with a poolside killer that has us dreaming of hot, hazy afternoons treading water, mornings when there’s nothing to do but soak in some rays, & nights of wine & torchlit patios. We hope you enjoy as much as we do!

JKriv - Summer Daze

Contrary to the misinformed UK rap didn’t start with Dizzy Rascal, The Streets & Stormzy

Neither was it always an inferior emulation of its US counterparts. The UK took musical influences from diverse sources inspired by the countries uniquely diverse spectrum of international cultures, embryonic influential moments that transformed into multiple worldwide musical phenomenons, hugely successful genres that could only of been forged in the UK. 

The evolution of rap in the UK is a complex and fascinating story, many of its first commercial releases might of been novelties or pop hit records but a parallel strong & passionate underground scene developed via events, clubs, magazines and nationwide specialist Rap radio shows, Hip Hop in the UK was a transformative colour blind unifying force. 

Although  much of it was ignored outside of the UK, Early British rap from across all regions of the country created many landmark timeless anthems that still sound as fresh and urgent today as they did when first released, equally as relevant as seminal revered releases from the same era across the pond, they deserve more respect and attention. 

I’ve tried to include as many of my favourite tracks from 1980-1996 as possible in this mix. In chronological order, but by no means definitive, I’m fully aware I’ve missed out loads of other great records, (and added some curveballs simply to infuriate purists) so my apologises to those legends & pioneers I didn’t feature. 

Also I’m certainly no turntablist so please don’t expect cutting, scratching or masterfully theatric blends, I’ll leave that to the experts. 

Apologies for playing Ian Dury during tracks from 1981, it was originally released in 1979 so really should have started the mix.

Sounds Before Midnight (Holding Patterns June 23)

Sebastian Grätz, based in Hamburg, Germany, and known professionally as Basso, is the man behind Growing Bin Records.
Growing Bin was set up in 2007 as a music blog before evolving into an online record store in 2012, with the offshoot micro-label Growing Bin Records launching the following year. The blog initially existed to catalogue Basso's broad musical tastes, today Growing Bin is very much in the business of selling records; From the ultra-rare and special interests to generally curious finds.

A core appeal of Growing Bin is that the material is handpicked according to, and solely for one man's esoteric tastes. There is no chasing of trends; If Basso likes it, he'll sell it. Another of the shop's unique traits is its copywriting; Growing Bin's website is a marvel with musical categories including Cocktails By The Pool, Cheap Magic and Dancing For Mental Health, breaking down into subcategories such as Embarrassing Mindblowingness, Never Leave The Bag and many more.

Anyway, over to the mix. As expected, Basso has delivered a wonderfully eclectic selection of records. 
We'd like to mention a few of his inclusions; 'La Bimini' by Spunk, a breezy P-funk monster if ever there was one, off their 1981 LP Tighten It Up, tight as f**k indeed! Remaining in Jazz-funk territory, Underground Canopy & Paloma Paloma's deep and soulful 'Même Heure Même Endroit', B-side of a 7" single from 2023, is just sublime. The HaHa Sounds Collective version of Marker Starling's 'Silk Rock', as championed by Gilles Peterson on his Worldwide FM radio show, is an absolutely stellar piece of music and arguably one of the strongest releases of 2020. Taken from her 1976 LP Più, Ornella Vanoni's moody 'Tu Chi Sei?' (underscored by a beat suspiciously reminiscent of a certain Paul Simon record) is another timeless inclusion here. 
A big thanks to Basso for taking the time to record this fantastic mix for the series.
