@ullastraus - popping out: I am following Ulla as an artist since a couple of years, and sth that always sticks out to me with her work is how much a sense of room there is in her tracks. You can literally feel how each element is placed mindfully in a slowly unfolding scenery. On the other hand there is a slight sense of wonkiness and “giving away control” , which lets the whole thing come to life. Another thing are the masterful and sparsely seeded harmonics you find. An always intriguing bouquet of sounds. Also, this track literally sounds like what the beginning of spring feels like to me.

@phubu - Bird Again: Sticking to the topic of spring, here are some birds. Phoebé Guillemot aka RAMZi can not be confined to one style, and that’s what I love about her music. Every track is a surprise, but her handwriting shines through and through. The theme of this track is apparently maybe possibly birds? It sounds like birds, it feels like birds and it conveys an image of disappearing as an observer in the daily life of a pile of…birds.

@andreamusik - Sephr: I don’t really know what it is about this track, but I am addicted to it since the release of the album. My brain keeps thinking the vocal sample means “bin sauer”, but I know that’s bs and now you can also probably not unheard it. Sorry bout that.

@djbirdbath - Fall: I swear the secret theme for this Podcast is NOT birds. @indexrecords have a long standing and continuous high quality output and their stuff is always pretty cutting edge and spanning across many genres. Their @appendixfiles series takes it even one step further. Nuff said, absorb this one.

@mruffing - Hitherto: Mathis is a producer with an insane sense for arrangement and sound design. Also I think he just plays a lot of video games, and I feel this track is just as much a club track, as it is the soundtrack to an insane high speed futuristic racing game that still needs to be made. Also the Album is called Skybox which fits the blue sky that I can see in Berlin today and that is so rare, it almost seems artificial. Buckle up for this one.

What makes a being ? What tends to be, always, and yet remains never achieved ? @jonnnah puts on this set of imagination many parts, many pieces, many elements. In this ninth release on Worst Records, the Lyon based musician gathers all the impressions defining this nebula. « Mental & Physical » is a collection above all things. We talk about a collection of influences. Industrialized trip-hop, dubstep for concrete spaces, new-age-infused ambient daydreams, links are hazy but incarnate. A constant rotation, between extasy and uneasy meditation, shapes this mass of artefacts that seems almost involuntary as they dig so deep into instinctiveness. At the root of this first magmatic opus lies a years long work in progress, a sonic research, the attempt to make live this body of vapour which is the music in becoming. It's a listening with no answer, but the pulse is vivid and vital.

Avec ce neuvième volet de Worst Records, le lyonnais liste toutes les impressions qui dessinent cette nébuleuse. « Mental & Physical » est avant tout une collection. Collection d'influences tout d'abord. Trip-hop industrialisante, dubstep pour tunnels de béton, ambient subtilement new-age, les ponts sont ténus mais réels et palpables. Collection de sens également. Une rotation permanente, entre extase et recueillement inquiet, sculpte cet amas incertain d'artefacts qu'on dirait presque involontaires tant ils creusent dans l'instinctif. A la génèse de ce premier opus magmatique se trouve un work in progress de plusieurs années, une recherche sonore, la tentative de faire vivre ce corps toujours vaporeux de la musique en devenir. Une écoute sans réponses, mais à la pulsation vitale intacte et organique.

oko is laced’s sophomore EP under her new moniker, which takes a new path compared to her previous noise explorations. Drawing inspiration from ambient music, dreampop, video game and anime soundtracks, breakbeat and IDM, the music conveys a dream world where the artist tends to escape in. The EP was produced over the course of 2021 since laced’s 2020 MUTEK performance in Montreal, taking a melodic approach in contrast to her more percussive productions. oko is best consumed under a pile of warm blankets or under the rain, its energy being one of catharsis, contemplation, healing and dreaming.

Picking up on the launch of Marie Montexier’s Paryìa label with a trippy EP by a.b.u.3.0.3., the second release comes from the Dublin based shooting star Small Crab.

The Skin & Blister founding member delivers three percussive breaky tracks that highlight a wide range of her musical influences. Combining smooth textures with tribal rhythms the ’Flowing with Honey’ EP perfectly rounds off with a bass heavy remix by London based producer Talik, who recently gained attention through highly acclaimed releases on 3024 and Intercept.

黑芝麻 (Hēi zhī ma) invites you to retreat inwards - on both the physical plane and within the depths of your psyche - as part of the Pure Space Home Listening series. 

Imagined during lockdown, Pure Space Home Listening // 黑芝麻和朋友们 (Hēi zhī ma and friends) probes home listening in the context of isolation.
As an artist, 黑芝麻 leans into the more emotive facets of sound, utilizing sonic and cerebral contrasts to subtly lull the listener into a journey unforeseen. This release sees them infuse this approach within their collaborations with artists Merph, Shoeb Ahmad, Moktar and Zhi. 

The artists explore the familiar feelings of solitude, urgency and release firmly etched into our collective consciousness, both synchronously and through their own distinct lens. 

“I Miss You” lulls you in with emotive pads that float above a sharp breakbeat and voice notes engulfed with longing. “Take Me Anywhere” provides a feeling of relief, as groove-laden techno bounces off the walls and into the abyss. “Associations” is an introspective, spacious and haunting track you want to float on and on. As you glide between these offerings, the intro and outro tracks hold space for tender ruminations.

The release serves as an archive of a more contemplative and confined period, through the distant murmur of voice notes, the metamorphosing drone of ambient soundscapes, poetic reveries that hang in the air, the rattling percussion of a breakbeat or techno high-hat and the gentle backdrop hums of nature.
This is an immersive audiovisual experience. Filmmaker Jane Inyang reimagines the EP in a short film through different listening contexts during a day in isolation for the protagonist. This short film will be accessible by a QR code in an accompanying poster and zine, which will also feature artist photos, recipes and poetry alongside the work of artist Jacquie Meng and photographer Chanel Nguyen. There will also be a limited run of earrings by Joanne Leong.
