Firmly ensconced at underground dance’s top table, GMJ has matured into a powerful force. Returning to the Meanwhile imprint he founded with spiritual brother, Matter, “Empty to Fill” is an outstanding new offering.

An artist who has risen to prominence in both the live and production arenas, Gavin Griffin finds himself at the centre of an ever-vibrant Melbourne music scene. Home to a host of iconic names and a sound that helped define the progressive house genre in the 2000s, his GMJ moniker has continued to shape the modern progressive sound. With over 400 production credits to his name, a century alongside long-term partner, Matter, GMJ has seen his music adorn the likes of Balance Music, Anjunadeep and Proton Music.

Opening his solo account on Meanwhile with October 2020’s “Mood Medicine”, collaborative EPs with Matter have seen “Lost on Origin”, “The Path / Perfect Storm” and “Eldarin” light up the label, alongside remixes for Simos Tagias, Roger Martinez and Matter himself.

Opening with the title track, “Empty to Fill” is a chunky, subterranean groove-fuelled monster. Bristling with menacing vibe, lighter moments come courtesy of floating synth motifs that glide to the fore in a stripped back breakdown of delicate keys and gloriously delayed sequences. A pulsating white-noise riser heralds a return of the club-friendly groove and gorgeous melodic flow in the latter stages.

Continuing with the trademark rolling groove that watermarks the GMJ sound, “Door of Light” sparkles with arpeggiated backdrop and reverse-reverb vocal breaths. Evolving immaculately, stratified sonic layers flourish as they entwine together in organic fashion. Counterpoint motifs coruscate above pulsing white-noise swells as the aptly named track waxes and wanes in perfect dancefloor cadence, before reaching a rousing crescendo in an immersive sonic tapestry.

The final piece sees the popping percussive vibrancy of “Stage Flight” sit atop a stereo-panned bass groove. Building over its 7-minute duration, syncopated synth riffs lock tightly into the driving framework that reaches its culmination with a chorus of breathy pads and a drop back into the rolling bassline and mirrored synth sequence. The resultant track is a powerful snapshot straight out of the GMJ production playbook.

Chock full of rhythmic force and multi-faceted layers of sound, “Empty to Fill” displays a sparkling 24-carat hallmark of the GMJ sound.

[...]A Meanwhile regular, April 2021's "Dunes at Dawn" EP and a pair of remixes sees Sebastian Sellares returns to the label after February 2022's remix of Alex O'Rion's "The Serpent". Reworking the title track, the Argentinean star makes intelligent use of the themes resonating through "Sami" as a hypnotic rhythmic bedrock provides the perfect foundation for smooth melodic lines to flow gently across the piece. Trademark motifs and counterpoint phrases swell gently towards a rousing breakdown, where new melodies and additional production material converge in a wondrous sonic storm. Melody and rhythm then combine in the second half to mesmerising effect.

From the town of O’Brien, part of the Buenos Aires province, Paul Deep has been a mainstay of the progressive house scene with his immaculate fusing of rhythm and melody. For almost a decade his releases have featured on an array of esteemed imprints that include GMJ & Matter’s Meanwhile, Juan Pablo Torrez’s Clubsonica Records and Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music. Over a double century of production credits thus tell their own story of Paul Deep’s success as he makes his debut on Proportion with “Fazed”.

Built upon a heavy beat and ticking percussive groove, the title track gently evolves with a range of melodic phrases that blends with sumptuous pads and shimmering arpeggios in an emotive combination. Waxing and waning with dancefloor knowhow, an exquisitely syncopated motif rolls forward with metronomic intensity to reveal a deep progressive gem. “Barion” continues the trademark rhythmic depth and rolling groove while textured pads and filtered motif enter the fray with typical subtlety and intensity. A beautiful piano sequence develops during the breakdown while a crescendo of delayed synth work paves the way for the dynamic groove to drop back into place alongside occasion vocal flourishes. Immediately revealing a slightly lighter touch and feel, “Ashura Path” excites with its off-beat hi-hats and punchy kick. Developing an expansive and beautifully cadenced synth pattern, delayed notes cascade across the stereo spectrum. Continuing a sparkling path across proceedings, the track reaches a rousing filtered denouement at the beatless mid-point before building once more through the final movement. Creamy pads and atmospheric swells add to the melange creating an intoxicating mix.

A long-term proponent of underground house movement dating back to a 2009 debut for The Sound of Everything, Harris Sgourdas has carved out a sizeable reputation over 15 years with his Blusoul soubriquet. An accomplished DJ and renowned figure in his Athens home city, plus producer of a portfolio of successful progressive house gems, the Greek star has found his work allied to some of the fines modern imprints that include the likes of Juice Box Music, Movement Recordings and Guy J’s Lost & Found. Making his Proportion debut, the Blusoul remix of “Fazed” builds around the rhythmic groove of the original before evolving effortlessly with intelligent use of familiar themes found within Paul Deep’s track. Rising and falling, a gathering sonic storm drives forwards as new melodic elements make their presence felt at the breakdown before extending through the second half with strong chord progression and club-friendly framework. The result is a powerful new interpretation that showcases craft and technique in abundance.

Making a welcome return to the label he co-founded in mid-2021 with fellow countryman, GMJ, Matter once again showcases his exceptional production skills on Meanwhile Horizons, this time in the shape of the 3-track, “Waratah / Living Dream / All Knowing”. 

After debuting on the label’s inaugural “Beyond the Horizon” release in August 2021, Matty Doyle took his Matter production moniker to new heights with the scintillating “Starchild” album. Released in November that year, the 10-track magnum opus perfectly illustrated the Melbourne star’s production wizardry with an immaculate blend of rolling grooves, cavernous basslines and floating melodies. Responsible for over 30 production credits on the flagship Meanwhile imprint in solo and collaborative guises, the most recent have come in January 2022’s “Banksia” and September’s remix of Alex O’Rion’s “Echium” with GMJ. 

“Waratah” thus retains all the trademark production knowhow built up over a decade at the vanguard of the progressive house scene. Characterised by a skipping rolling groove, a huge pulsating bassline powers across the low-end while a smooth lead-line coruscates above with carefree abandon. Delicately cadenced chords and rich pads add to the soundscape, revealed fully at the breakdown, while a second half combination of groove and melody creates a sublime denouement. 

Replete in complex and intricately programmed percussive flare, the feelgood, “Living Dream” is propelled forward with deep kick and catchy muted motif. Vocal-infused pads whisper gently while an upward arpeggio adds additional character and sonic flare as the track reaches its captivating zenith. 

The final offering sees the melancholy overtones of “All Knowing” ripple across a hypnotic rhythmic backdrop. Ticking hats and fizzing shakers keep dancefloor energy high while a panoply of complementary melodies and phrases fire off each other, culminating in a filtered analogue sequence at the mid-point. Building once more in the second half the phrase comes to the fore once again, surrounded by the head-shaking groove and subtle melodic arrangement. 

Crafting a beautiful sonic novella via “Waratah / Living Dream / All Knowing”, Matter demonstrates an abundance of creative talent.
