The Second Arrow
The parable of the second arrow is a well-known Buddhist story about dealing with suffering more skilfully. It is said the Buddha once asked a student,
‘If a person is struck by an arrow, is it painful? If the person is struck by a second arrow, is it even more painful?’
He then went on to explain,
‘In life, we can’t always control the first arrow. However, the second arrow is our reaction to the first. This second arrow is optional.’
This is sometimes interpreted as meaning that pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional.

Hello, bass family. It's good to be with you in this space again, after so long. So much has happened, for all of us. I'm not sure whether this mix will be a one off thing, or whether i'll do it again. But i felt the time was right to share some of the musical magic that has been helping me stay just about sane.

Funds will be gifted to Black Minds Matter UK, an organisation connecting Black people with free mental health support provided by Black therapists. I’ve chosen this organisation because so much of the music i love and that i’m sharing with you now descends from the music of Black people - music that can at least partly be understood as a form of creative response to the social, cultural, intergenerational and personal traumas of white supremacy. 

So i invite you to flow into this music that brings us back into our bodies, that opens up space in our minds, that shrinks the distance between us, expands our sense of what’s possible, and reminds us what love, connection and belonging feel like. I invite you to honour the history of this music and the memory of its creative pioneers, by offering support to the people still living with the same injustices today.

I know times are tough for so many of you - if you can't afford to give anything, this mix goes out particularly to you. But if you can afford even just a couple of pounds or dollars, it makes a difference and is deeply appreciated.
