A New Start

He set the table himself dim lights, polished wood, candles flickering like the last hopes in his chest. He placed his heart on the plate, raw and honest, hoping it would be enough.

She arrived, perfume first, beauty next. She smiled. She listened to his dreams, maybe even believed them for a minute. But when he slid his heart across the table, bleeding, vulnerable, everything he had; she just...leaned in, pressed her lips to his glass, and left her mark.

Not a sip. Not a taste.
Just proof she’d been there.

She got up, straightened her dress, and with a whisper of expensive fragrance, a ghost of a smile, she walked away; leaving him alone with nothing but the memory of a red lipstick print and a heart that was never touched.

He learned: sometimes the deepest wounds aren’t from those who break your heart, but from those who never even bother to hold it. Some love stories end before they begin; marked by a presence, not a connection.

He sat in the silence, staring at the glass, the plate, the empty chair.
And in that emptiness, he realized.
A heart offered is not always a heart received.
Some people just leave a mark, and call that love.
