"The author of these notes has spent his life explaining radical music, and the music on this disc may be the most radical I've ever written about. Peter Thoegersen (b. 1967) is not yet a name known to the music world; not for any lack of connection to other famous musicians, but because he came to composition late, and because his artistic aims are so broad and complex that they have taken years to evolve. His aesthetic is well defined, and he is upfront about having a name for it: "Polytempic Polymicrotonal Music." That means he has musical layers simultaneously moving in different tempos, plus, even more radically, that he has different microtonal scales playing at the same time. Few composers have aimed at such fervent and heterogeneous multidimensionality. And yet, while Thoegersen's music can seem overwhelming at first, running through it is a level of charm and simplicity that belies the initial impression.

In total, these three pieces emphasize a particular side of Thoegersen's output. The image his music creates of ornately mathematical structures filled with intuitively friendly melodies maps on to the personality of the man himself: outspoken and acerbically ruthless in his musical opinions, Thoegersen is also marked by a jolly sense of humor and an inexhaustible love of cats and other animals that make him ultimately less imposing and more personable than he might seem at first. The same can be said for his music. And by going further than anyone else has gone in terms of this particularly American concept of fusing the polytempic with the polymicrotonal - extending and combining the conceptual worlds of Ives, Cowell, Nancarrow, Partch, Carter, even Frank Zappa and many others - he has created a special place for himself within American music."

A native-born Texan, John Michael Pekowski, PhD (b. 1975) began composing music at age 11. Simple improvisations on the family upright piano were followed by electronic compositions in BASIC code on the TI-99 computer.

In Junior High (1988) he was elected President of the Science Club, served as Social Chairman of the band, was awarded the John Philip Sousa Award, and was a featured soloist on trumpet. In High School (1994) John was section leader, co-principal trumpet of LYSO, Jazz One soloist (TTU Band Camp), and TMEA All-State Concert Band participant.

He was a member of the Texas Tech University Jazz One, Symphonic Band (1994-2002), recorded with the fee-improvisation ensemble YATE, his dissertation greatly advanced our understanding of the hierarchical organization of pitch-interval cycles within a voice-leading context, and was in contention for the Graduate Achievement Award.

The world premiere of his composition Jest of Moonlit Point for Pierrot Quintet, took place in 2024 and was performed by the Texas New Music Ensemble conducted by Bill Tacket. In 2021 Forest of the Birdsong for soprano sax (David Dees) and piano (Nataliya Sukhina) was premiered at Crickets Theater / Buddy Holly Hall.

Dr. Pekowski continues to compose classical instrumental. Recent works include String Quartet Suites No. 1-9 (2019-2022), Jest of Moonlit Point for Pierrot Quintet (2024), Brookhollow Bayou for Solo Flute (2024), and Suite for Orchestra No1-No2 (2023-2025).

My name is George Christian, I was born in August 10th, 1981, and my homeland is the city of Salvador, capital of Bahia, in Brazil. I'm a self-taught composer and a guitarrist with more than 10 years of experience. Even with not much formal instruction, I opted to be committed with my own discoveries in Art instead of being a musician in the entertainment field. I'm also a writer with five reasonably finished books of poem, however not published, and graduate in National and Foreign Languages (English) at Federal University of Bahia (UFBa). My essential aim in Music is to develop a compositional approach that encompasses not only popular but also the classical fields in an equanimity, and creates a synthesized universe of its own. The songwriting and the improvisations living side-by-side with electroacoustic studies and compositions with a larger structure, and working all the styles with a lyrical universalist philosophy. The musical message wants to restore the faith in humanity outside the chaos and overwhelming situations, even bringing back a sense of adventure, terror and reflection. And it surpasses the subtle autobiographical aspects to seek what is worth to be shared with the cosmos inside our hearts. It's not about any kind of musical devices or styles, but it's a meditation on life, death, ressurrection and eternity through the organization and impact of sounds. (written in February 25th, 2010)
