Aimed at providing a different insight into dance music the label Special place provides both acoustic and electronic sounds that are not sonically linked to a specific era, but all carry a shamanic or esoteric hinge. This EP is just that with the three amazing artists Mushrooms Project, Longhair and Eric Duncan all bringing their own take to this leftfield slomo disco to house vibe. It’s an honor to have them on board!

You gotta love Eric Duncan. Such a laidback, fun and easy going chap! After having turned NY upside down he currently resides in Bali when he's not touring amidst the pandemic. He actually remixed this track whilst in Brazil (how does he do that?). He probably has the vastest collection of selfies with DJ Harvey if this means anything. Berlin based Longhair has a string of releases on labels such as Bordello A Parrigi, Permanent Vacation or Love On the Rocks. He actually does sport long hair and probably has a third ear for turning music into untameable beat dance fury. And what about our hosts Mushrooms Project? Well they paved a solid catalogue with their characteristic shamanic house music releases, go check out for yourself!

Forthcoming with another release is one of Fantastic Voyage’s founding members, Danny Goliger. In early 2021 the music producer, audio engineer, and instrumentalist will present his debut album, “Meaningful Pursuits” on the label. The forthcoming IDM full-length consists of 11 tracks and represents his personal growth as an artist and individual.

Goliger has captured some personal trauma and placed it into melodies, chords, and synths. These melancholy sounds are reflective of his healing from these wounds. When speaking about recording the album at that time in his life, Danny describes feeling like a broken computer simulation – glitchy and fragmented, which comes full circle as you listen to the record. His long-time musical collaborator, Benny Bridges, created generative visualizers for each track that also help convey this notion.

Deeply passionate about electronic music hardware, Goliger recorded this album at his studio in Echo Park using his analog synths, drum machines, and hardware samplers. Featuring a heady blend of experimental IDM/Electronica, the album pays homage to his musical heroes including Aphex Twin, Autechre, Floating Points, Skee Mask and Proem to name a few. His penchant for audio engineering is on display, with this glitchy record showcasing a technical precision that blends seamlessly with his strong musical compositions.

Although this is the first solo LP for the Los Angeles producer, Danny is a prolific collaborator, producing and engineering on many diverse projects that span numerous genres. As a seasoned musician with many years under his belt, he can also be seen playing keys and drums in the Fantastic Voyage band and music-directing for Mija’s live shows.

We are delighted to welcome one of our all-time favourite Norwegian producers to the Phonica Mix Series - Bård Aasen Lødemel aka Skatebård. Dating back to the early 2000s, Skatebård's predominantly house and techno-focused productions have been picked up and released by such labels as Sex Tags Mania, Bordello A Parigi, Full Pupp, Untz Untz, Live At Robert Johnson and, of course, his own Digitalo Enterprises imprint. Coming in at almost 2-hours long, Bård's roof-raising mix recording is a deep dive into the more cosmic and energetic shades of house, techno and Italo, with tracks coming from Juri Hulkkonen, Lauer, DJ Blasy, Huey Mnemonic, Helium, Cybertrax and more. Head on over to offtherecord.net where you will find an in-depth interview with the main man himself, as well as a full tracklist. It’s a welcome change to see the dance music industry shift from a sausage fest to a decidedly more diverse scene of artists and DJs. As an A&R guy, it’s been a source of frustration that I haven’t signed more non-dude talent. In my defence, 95%+ of the demos I’ve gotten over the years have been from men or boys, but I’ve realized that perhaps following the example of an A&R hero like Matias Aguayo, I could do more to dig and encourage women to get more involved in the little community I build with my labels. With that in mind, I’ve got a few releases in the works with some incredible women and am happy to announce this EP today, on International Women’s Day, because not only does MISS REPRESENTED indeed check that gender box, she is a total original, a woman of experience and knowledge, she bucks all the trends and has a fearless, powerful voice. She’s not a kid with inflated instagram numbers and a manager, she’s someone who has lived her life in the dark corners of the music scene and has a story to tell. If there’s one thing dance music is guilty of, rightly or wrongly, it’s escapism, and a refusal to confront real issues and subjects. On those rare occasions where a dance track holds overt meaning it’s SO powerful and memorable, and while these aren’t conventional peak-time tracks, they’ve definitely got groove and they’ve got a message. I could go on and on, but without further ado, here’s a sneak preview of the B2 cut from the next release on my new label PARTY CENTRAL.

Miss Represented - The Truth Is Out There [PC002]

There was something special about this place, it had a deep perfumed scent and the breeze blew softly amidst the low hanging branches. The trees were in full bloom and lovers walked hand and hand amist old buildings, each gaze fixated on a piece of history which had stood long before their arrival and would remain for a lifetime after. Kyoto was a beautiful world, a distant paradise in which ethereal peace was granted to those who walked amidst the old streets. This was to be their last day in the city, at least for a little while. 

Atilla Fidan is the label boss behind Berlin based imprint Tape Archive, from time to time he releases new music under the guise of Views - a moniker with which we have become fiercely interested. Enchanting pads and delicate layers of texture litter his productions yet his tracks remain as rough and ready for the dancefloor as they do beautiful.
