Back in 2011 we caught up with Martyn as he prepared to release his sophomore album Ghost People on Brainfeeder - conversing away on the obstacle of second album syndrome, his first foray into performing his music live and his early collaborations. Seven years later and an album on Ninja Tune in between, his fourth LP titled Void lands on Berlin's flagship label Ostgut Ton on the 22nd of June. Questioning everything he has done musically in the past, and everything he still wants to do, the album has been described as being written as a means of catharsis, recently being released from the hospital after some unexpected health issues. Turning to Max Roach's 1979 ensemble percussion album M’Boom, however, was the spark in reassessing the elements that drove him to make music in first place.

In his own words: "That was the first record I listened to in my studio after coming out of the hospital. It's a project where Roach works with a slew of top notch percussionists and drummers and rotates them for every composition. Playing this record was such a surreal experience, the first music I consciously listened to after my recovery. I could hear so much space in the music, something I had never noticed before; almost like a 3D experience, with the most striking aspect being the emptiness between the players."

In the space of eight months Martyn would write his fourth album, creating an almost semi-descendant of his first LP Great Lengths sound-wise, yet forging new paths forward in genre. At nine tracks, with no collaborations or vocalists, the music is described as being stripped down its essentials, as Martyn looks to recontextualize his music with elements of Nyabinghi, drum ‘n‘ bass, and gqom. His Truancy Volume, which he calls an 'inspiration mixtape' to compliment Voids, is a collection of music, new and old that he's listened to over the past year. With Digital Mystikz alongside Shed and Objekt alongside Appleblim, Martyn roams through an almost biographical tale of selections, with his love for jazz shining through with the inclusion of London jazz collective Sons Of Kemet. We also caught up with Martyn for the second time on Truants to talk about Voids, how his ideas form, playing live at Panorama Bar and how radio has become more accessible than ever.

If you've ever made it to a Version party, usually held in Tresor's sister club Ohm in Berlin, you'll be well aware of Hops' impeccable taste for percussive, bass heavy club sounds with an undeniable swagger. The former reggae buyer at Hard Wax, where he worked for 7 years, has long been honing his craft in Berlin's clubs and is now one of the most reliable proponents of dub inspired dance music. Hops now heads up the Version clubnight with his friend Orson, who is also responsible for running the label of the same name and continues to put out strong releases from the likes of Agrippa and Yak. The night has become a go-to for many, from Berlin and far beyond, seeking the intersection of dubstep, techno, grime and dub that Hops brings to the floor. As fans ourselves at Truants, we thought he would be perfect to tap up for a Truancy Volume, and he sure didn't disappoint.

Peverelist's influence on Bristol's underground music scene cannot be overstated - always staying ahead of the seismic shifts happening within dance culture, he's been responsible for consistently pushing things forward. The Livity Sound co-founder and Punch Drunk boss has sound system music running through his blood - having been responsible for classics such as 'Roll With The Punches', over a decade he managed the vital Rooted Records store that helped put the sounds of the city on the map, curated the now-infamous Dubloaded night, and promoted gigs around the West Country city. Recently, the electronic innovator dropped a 12" on Bristol record shop Idle Hands' label, having contributed the first release to the imprint in 2009. He also put out a compilation from unsung pioneers Smith & Mighty, originators of the Bristol sound, jointly on his Punch Drunk and Pinch's Tectonic. 'Ashley Road Sessions (1988-1994)' (whose 'Dub Song' we recently premiered) gathers together unreleased gems from the dub innovators who paved the way for the likes of Tricky, Portishead, and Roni Size. Peverelist centres his Dummy mix around the compilation - having previously cited the pair as a big influence on his own sound, focusing on originals by the duo and related artists who were part of the scene at the time. Kicking off with some beatless, break-fuelled sounds, the mix veers into classic S&M dub before delving into shadowy jungle corners for an exclusively sound system-aimed mix.

“For my Mixmag cover mix I just wanted to give readers an idea of some of the things I’ve been playing out in my sets recently. With only an hour or so to play with I decided not to go too crazy with the BPM ranges or polyrhythmic excursions of other recent mixes of mine, but I still wanted to thread together my usual broad range of styles while keeping it relatively accessible and party-friendly overall – at least by my standards. It’s mostly new(ish) material with a couple of older records thrown in, weaving its way through techno, breakbeat, electro, deconstructed club, garage and acid – a good example of what I might play in the first hour of a longer set, perhaps, before potentially venturing further into faster electro or IDM or jungle or slowing it way down later on.” @keinobjekt

The Cover Mix: Objekt

Berlin-based @darwinspec is a resident at Griessmuehle and runs the REEF parties, which have taken up residency in Mexcio city for winter at YuYu club. She also runs the SPE:C (@specrecords) label, which has a string of releases lined up for 2019 including an EP from @sepehr-a. Two forthcoming dubs from Sepehr are included on this mix.
