Hildegard of Bingen (1098–1179), a German nun and the first female professional composer mentioned in the history of music, is one of the most unique and influential personalities of the Middle Ages. She was known in Germany and throughout Europe as an eminently gifted mystic and prophet, adviser to emperors and popes, and author of many theological, scientific, and medical books. Her transcendental and healing music is composed specifically for female voices. The vocal group PUTNI is the only ensemble in Latvia that specializes in the performance of Hildegard's music and creates a new program every year centered around Hildegard's meditative, gorgeously ornamented unison chants.
