The second single taken from The James L’Estraunge Orchestra’s dazzling debut album ‘Eventual Reality’, ‘See You Tonight’ is a sensitive and introspective jazz ballad. Lush orchestral arrangements, mournful muted horns and acoustic guitars underpin a heartfelt vocal performance by artist Ricky Reid. The song’s disarmingly honest lyrics explore a junction between past and present, reconciling both in a moving tribute to those special people who help us choose a better path in life.

Enjoying early support from Craig Charles, Gilles Peterson and a host of other tastemakers, The James L’Estraunge Orchestra is a shadowy band pieced together from a series of late night studio sessions by multi-instrumentalist Ricky Reid. One half of Soul Renegades as well as supplying keys and vocals for 6th Borough Project, Ricky has long been a stalwart of Scotland’s dance and jazz music scenes. Composed and recorded in Ricky’s remote cabin in the Scottish wilderness, album ‘Eventual Reality’ is the product of a prodigiously talented artist allowing himself the time and space to explore the full expanse of his imagination.

Aloha Got Soul's first collab release with the Kakubarhythm label, featuring Japan's Your Song Is Good with Nick Kurosawa and Videotapemusic. 

In May 2017, Aloha Got Soul and Kakubarhythm hosted their first party together with ‘Soul Time in Tokyo’ at Tokyo Cultuart by Beams in Harajuku. 

At the event, Your Song Is Good and Videotapemusic performed an instrumental cover version of Babadu’s “We’re Not To Blame”. Hearing that song reinterpreted by musicians 35 years from the original release date and thousands of miles away from Hawaii gave me chicken skin. 

But the magic didn’t end there. At the end of our DJ set with the crowd yelling “Hana hou!” for one last track, I reached into my record bag and grabbed my OG copy of Babadu LP and dropped the needle on “We’re Not To Blame”. Videotapemusic, JxJx, and Izumi Matsui instinctively picked up their instruments and we closed out the Beams party with a surprise jam session none of us had anticipated! 

When we started planning for 2018, I pitched JxJx the idea of releasing their instrumental cover on a 7-inch. When the final recording arrived, it was around the same time we were recording Nick Kurosawa’s debut EP, so I asked Nick if he’d be down to lend his soulful voice to the instrumental. 

The “Coast to Coast” EP, releasing April 21, 2018 on Aloha Got Soul and Kakubarhythm, represents a unique opportunity for us to connect the past and the present, and as bridge the musical relationship we share between Hawaii and Japan.

High Pulp are an 8-piece band that emerged from the Royal Room, a legendary Seattle Jazz club where they held “Funk Church” jam sessions in 2017. Their sig- nature sound is a Psychedelic fusion of Hip-Hop, Funk, Jazz, and Soul which come together with complex, well thought out arrangements and progressive style. After successful sessions and premieres with prestigious station KEXP, and being at the forefront of the Seattle music scene, they’re now ready to branch out and take their sound worldwide.

Bad Juice kicks off with lush, soulful big band horns, as the triumphant and quite epic intro sets the tone for this truly unique multifaceted band. They really show off their skills in the first few minutes, showing off a range of styles from an uptempo ska-like jam to a downtempo sleazy Jazz-Rock groove.

The sublime and spacey ‘Dave’s’ is another standout cut. A stellar piece of high- grade musicianship, and the perfect relaxing tune to throw on after a hard day’s work. Other tracks like ‘Smooth’ give Khruangbin a run for their money.

The beautifully versatile album, 8 tracks in length, now comes remastered on dou- ble vinyl LP with updated cover art. Originally released in 2018 as a small vinyl run, the project gets a much needed revamp. With 3 more releases planned through KingUnderground, the band is very much on its way to well-deserved, wider appeal.
                        
Their high level of creativity and leftfield Cinematic Orchestra/Stereolab-esque ar- rangements meld perfectly with the inspiration of 60’s and 70’s Jazz, Soul, and Funk. It’s sprinkled with a new age touch in a concoction worthy of any lounge, Funk, or Dance DJ or discerning crate digger alike.

Exclusive Premiere:  High Pulp "Epilogue" (Forthcoming on King Underground)

MIMS is delighted to premiere "The Underdog" by Nick Walters & The Paradox Ensemble. Bursting with energy, this big band number is the first track on their forthcoming third studio album 'Implicate Order', the inaugural release on Nick Walters brand new label, D.O.T. Records. 

The eleven piece group continues to break the mould of big band jazz, combining spiritual and eastern jazz moods with West African rhythms and a fusion of electronics. “Implicate Order” follows up the bands highly acclaimed “Awakening” LP released on 22a in January 2019. 

Safe to say, it does not disappoint, but rather builds on the previous releases.  Walters shines on trumpet and electronics, his rousing compositions provide the perfect foil for this band that appears to be very comfortable playing with each other. Jim Molyneux is impressive on drumkit, as is Rebecca Nash on piano and of course, Ed 'Tenderlonious' Cawthorne on tenor sax, flute and piccolo.

"The Underdog" is a sprightly tribute to Charles Mingus, inspired by his classic album 'The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady’. Walters’ lofty trumpet takes the lead, conducting the 11 piece band along a catchy hook, brought to a head by the excellent Richard Foote on Trombone.

We anticipate with much excitement the post-lockdown album and label launch at the London's Jazz Cafe, January 26.
