In an industry that favors niche branding and subgenre packaging, Palberta is a difficult band to place. Their music is free and uninhibited in a way that makes it all their own. Often, Palberta songs are marked with a child-like communication -- chants and lullabies are met with snarling tantrums, while their instruments coo and careen towards an often abrupt finish. Their playful approach to writing produces work that is hyper-emotional -- as jarring as it is soothing and as loopy as it is sinister. 
 
Palberta was formed when Lily Konigsberg, Anina Ivry-Block, and Nina Ryser met while attending Bard College. They honed their sound in basements across the Hudson valley, and quickly gained a reputation for their brazen and feverish live shows. Through prolific touring and recording, they have developed a dedicated nation-wide following without the aid of a major label. Outside of the band, the three of them actively pursue solo endeavors, with Palberta serving as a culminating force - a band driven by uncompromising personality. 
 
Bye Bye Berta is their seventh release and their most sonicly expansive release yet. Recorded by frequent collaborator Paco Cathcart at a library in Roxbury, Connecticut, the record features contributions from artists in their community.

"Record half of a live duet."
I love this idea. I went for an ukulele solo, I was going to record this idea next week, but wanted to add upright basses (pizz) and some kind of abstract soundscapes and perhaps more development, solo etc, but as this is something I had right there on the stove, let’s see if it can serve this week’s challenge .

Recorded by DD in Paris, February 24th 2017 between 14h00 and 15h00 

It’s my new Ukulele (the first really good one I’ve got) recorded with two microphones and performed live. Couldn't make a video but took picture of the instrument(attached to the SC post) the binding is beautiful, isn’t it?
Added some huge convolution reverb (a minute long impulse named Taj-Mahal) and that’s about it.
Would love to hear someone else’s take on this, I feel that particularly some abstract sounds and soudnscapes would fit  mixed with the more organic feel of the melody.

Disquiet Junto Project 0270: Just Duet
Record the second half of a duet.

Since Daniel Diaz did such a wonderful job with the bass part I submitted for last week's Junto, I said I would 'return the favour' as best I could, dueting with his own gorgeous piece on ukulele from last week.

In keeping with the project brief, this is a live bass guitar accompaniment to Daniel's part on ukulele. 

Added Soundtoys Crystalizer as an insert on the bass track, mixed in at 5%, into Eventide Blackhole, again at 5% - adds a kind of tuned reverb / pad sound as a background, to accompany the lovely high-pass-filtered reverb Daniel had on his ukulele.

Hope you enjoy. Thanks to Daniel for an inspirational "first half".

With an excellent prompt on one of my favorite parts of music making, you’d think piece of cake. Well maybe that’s the problem, I love kits, drums, rhythms, pads and most anything percussive in nature. It was my first instrument and still plays a large role in most of what I do. So it’s possible a little too much enthusiasm and importance was put into this kit. I had thought of using one of the many already in my arsenal, but thought that wasn’t in the spirit of this weeks Junto. Opening my recorded samples folder started the process.
The Torment Kit:
Kick -
1st layer -  Dead blow hammer on tire w/compressor, eq and fuzz
2nd layer - cardboard box hit w/eq
3rd layer - unlabeled field recording on some machine w/eq
Snare - 
1st layer - metal bucket hit w/enhancer and eq
2nd layer - plastic jug hit w/eq
HiHat closed - 
1st layer - container full of metal parts hit
2nd layer - drumstick hit on sheetmetal
HiHat open - 
1st layer - dropped lid w/eq
2nd layer - metal box cover w/eq
Clap - breaking stuff w/eq
Crash - 
1st layer - kitchen utensils w/enhancer and eq
2nd layer - broken heating coil hit w/eq
Weird hit - unknown field recording w/chorus
Tom - finished kick transposed w/eq
Each kit sound was made in Cubasis, mixed down and sent to Audioshare, trimmed and normalized for use in any sampler or DAW kit.
The entire kit was given a small drum room overhead mic reverb and levels were mostly equaled out with all panned center where recordings allowed.
The Song:
Of course the obvious choice was going to be very beat driven, so the above sounds were brought into Patterning 2 for a custom kit perfect for live manipulation! A 4/4 135 bpm file was created and live pad view opened. It started innocently enough, but went out of control into a 10:00 jam with ratcheting counts and delays and tunings and swing all being messed with. It got ugly and noisy. Perfect, but too long and dull for normal consumption, so the best bits were sent to play with a raucous Sunrizer patch. And crickets. And a badly done building chorus. All with overdriven amp patches and distortion and noise. You get the drift. It was late, the beat sounded good and it all went wrong ;-) If anybody is using Patterning and interested, I can try uploading?

This week's junto is about insomnia. I am very short on time this week, due to preparations for an exam next Friday, but the theme is one that I often expore - I have been a VERY heavy sleeper all my life, except for a few bouts of terrible insomnia back in my early 20s. I would often get up at 2 or 3 am, put headphones on and make music to try and slow the mental hamsterwheels and tire myself into sleep.  The thing with deep insomnia is that the mood stays with you, long after you have recovered good sleeping habits. Even now, some 20 years later, I am still able to mine the strange mental states that I found myself in back then. (If you ever hear a drawn out, thin, high pitched warbling and shimmering sound in any of my music- that is usually a sign I am exploring that region of my past, as it is a sound that has deep associations with my insomnia - e.g. last week's Disquiet entry, which could easily function as this week's entry as well).   Anyway, earlier this week I was improvising at the piano, while feeling quite tired, and the resulting piece could work well as a sort of 'lullaby' composed by an insomniac - the mind tired and wandering, working through some problem or other, reaching some sort of unsatisfactory conclusion, and then gradually shifting into sleep - but always the mind has to have one last word...

I probably didn't make it more sedate... But I had to work with the track, it is so sweet, takes so many lovely turns.

I've had an awful problem with some clicking in this Ableton set. I spend a long while - must be three hours - debugging the set. Couldn't isolate the cause. I had to get iZotope RX6's Declicker going on a stereo bounce-down in the end. I am gonna dig further, so I will upload afresh if I can get to the bottom of it...

Bloody computers.
