The 8th instalment of our In:Focus Series goes back to where it all began. The Originators, the start of the sound we all love - Its Mark & Moritz, it's Basic Channel. 

There’s not a lot we can write that hasn’t already been written about this legendary duo and record label. Its quite hard to fathom how much innovation and quality came out of Berlin in such a small space of time, but over the course of 2/3 years Mark and Moritz invented a genre and wrote there names into the history books.   

What we have presented here isn’t a complete body of their work but it covers the majority of their output , with most of the ‘Big Hitters’ featured. We Chose to focus specifically on the releases as Basic Channel / Cyrus / Quadrant, however there is much more to explore, with their output as Maurizio, Rhythm&Sound, Round One - Five. 

Many have tried imitating, none have succeeded. This is Basic Channel

We are so excited to welcome Melbourne- based dj, radio host, curator and label head @pjenne to our mix series. 

Pjenne is at the forefront of the Aussie underground scene, a true visionary! Her sound takes many forms and genres but she crafted a unique style that is very much of her own. If you haven’t already listened to her beautifully curated radio show/mix series Passing Notes we highly recommend.  

 “This mix is a live recording of (most of) my set at @terra-obscura-london in London in April last year. I played from 12-2am after Slowfoam and before Oma Totem Live - a time in the night where Ormside projects was transformed from 'soft furnishings' to club. I think the mix represents the music I played a lot across my tour last year (and probably won't stop playing), with an additional emotional sprinkle that was inspired by the work of @avsluta and @aliciasteanson. <3”

Contributing our latest episode is London’s ANNX, a regular figure within the city’s cutting-edge undercurrent whose many contributions include co-curation of the Whomp, Perspectives, and once-shrouded Magick events, and a residency at the beloved Above Below festival. Anna’s tireless dedication to the scene goes hand-in-hand with her unmistakable talent behind the decks, as evidenced by an impressive repertoire of mixes and set recordings, and which I was fortunate enough to witness first-hand last summer in the Chilterns. Here Anna demonstrates her well-honed craft over the course of two meticulously plotted hours, diving seamlessly into manifold forms of deep, heavy psychedelia before emerging in a wave of euphoric bliss. This mix showcases Hame’s unique talent for blending vibrant energy with heartfelt expression, making it a truly compelling addition to your listening experience. He approaches this set much like movie soundtrack, crafting a narrative with different chapters that, while distinct, come together seamlessly to create a captivating and immersive journey.

"The set ends with a track I made, built around words by Teig Sadhana about the vulnerability of men. It’s a subject that comes up often in my work as an applied psychologist, especially in conversations with boys and young men. Some carry unspoken thoughts - like feeling content with the idea of becoming a stay-at-home dad, or not pursuing traditional career ambitions. Sometimes about smaller subjects, like asking for help. Many describe pressure from society, or a lack of support from peers, when it comes to embracing less conventional paths.

I believe there’s a lot to gain, as a society, if men feel freer to speak about these thoughts. If being loved and respected is tied in the mind to career success, self-reliance and emotional toughness, it becomes difficult to let go of that framework. Historically, this mindset has been rewarded with status and security - but that doesn’t mean it’s something healthy for everyone to continue striving for.

We’re often comfortable talking about ambition, strength, and problem-solving - traits we’ve learned to view as charismatic or positive. But many of us were never taught how to speak openly about things that might be seen as weak or uncertain.

And yet, isn’t it one of the braver things - to show vulnerability in the face of discomfort or fear? Toughness can serve many purposes, but I think a more open and compassionate attitude among men toward vulnerability can help us become less protective of what’s been built in the world and in our minds, creating more space for everyone in society."
