Pendulum

London-based contemporary trio Quest Ensemble bring a unique take to the classical piano trio format.  A collaboration between 3 versatile performers/composers - Filipe Sousa (piano), Preetha Narayanan (violin) and Tara Franks (cello), their varied musical styles weave together a lyrical tapestry of sound, blending improvisation with co-created original compositions.

Drawing on influences as broad as the contemporary minimalism of John Adams and Steve Reich to medieval plainchant, the experimental melancholic textures of Radiohead to the progressive jazz precision of Brad Mehldau, their lyrical melodic lines, rich harmonies and interwoven rhythmic counterpoint place the trio in a unique musical landscape between chamber, jazz, folk and 21th century contemporary classical music.

Filipe Sousa is a pianist, composer, educator and sound artist. With a background in Architecture, his work as a composer and performer is often concerned with space and movement, driven by a strong sense of rhythm and flow. With his unique blend of influences, he makes music that is at once fresh and familiar.
His ‘InTransit’ sound pieces have been featured in online arts magazine ‘Muda’ and he founded Quest Ensemble a contemporary classical piano trio who devise their own music and have just launched their acclaimed sophomore album 'The Other Side' (*****Songlines Magazine)His piece ‘Like as the waves’, written for cellist Matt Haimovitz and vocal trio Voice was selected as Runner Up in the Oxingale International Composition Competition and performed across the USA in 2016.

POETRY IS VITAL

This threshold space exists for those who feel like listening to some of my quite professional poetry embedded in rather amateurishly recorded but judiciously arranged sound, a modicum of purely acoustic work notwithstanding. SOUND, SPACE AND TIME

Tend your listening senses gently. Even though my general approach welcomes and embraces lo-fi concepts like the precision of spontaneously occuring imprecisions, headphones worth their membranes are recommended - unless you like your sounds flat, mangled, battered and helpless. You don't, do you? Be kind to these soundscapes.

STRUCTURING IMPULSE

Due to the nature of "poetry soundscapes", your listening expectations regarding traditionally structured "songs", sonically purified "raw wildlife soundscapes", keyboard-laden "ambient recordings" or voice-centered "readings" might not be met. You will find some of those in my list of /likes/. "Noise" is a recurring structural element like any other. This is what this sounds like - within its own rights, limitations, tangents and interconnections. Sonic structures. Silent stretches. Poetry emerges from the gaps between the ruts, seeps in from the undergrowth, sweeps down.

Above, there is a tiny poem of mine that I do not understand how to translate into sound. If you do - please act on it. It is a matter of common decency, of course, to keep the title (Small Gifts) and to credit the lyrics to me (jo richter). And please do notify me of your version via a soundcloud message. One bewilderingly beautiful version crafted by mono-lux has already gone public, as well as an amazing version by cthonicist.  You'll find both in my playlist Sympoetic Ultrasounds. This is just a small gift, not a challenge - life already has more than enough of those on offer, doesn't it? Treat it this way.

Egresado de la Escuela Superior de Música y del Diplomado Transdisciplinario en Investigación, Experimentación y Producción Artística Tránsitos 25.Cómo músico orquestal fue miembro de la Orquesta Escuela Carlos Chávez (2016-2018) y participó en la Sinfónica Juvenil Nacional José de San Martin (Argentina, 2018) bajo la batuta de directores como Enrique Diemecke, Mario Benzecry, Arturo Márquez y Gustavo Dudamel.Cómo músico de fila en orquesta se ha presentado en escenarios como la Sala Principal del Palacio de Bellas Artes, Auditorio Blas Galindo, Auditorio del CCU (Puebla), Teatro Macedonio Alcalá (Oaxaca) y la Sala Sinfónica del Centro Cultural Kirchner (Argentina).Fue beneficiario del estímulo de la convocatoria "CuarArte Oaxaca" en 2020. Ha participando en el Festival Virtual Itsï (México, 2020) y el Festival Asimtria (Perú, 2021) con diseños sonoros. En 2022 junto con Random Trigger (Taiwán) y Emanation (China/Mexico) colabora en la creación de diseños sonoros para el proyecto "Creative Reserch of female shamans in Oaxaca" realizado en la Sierra Mazateca con el apoyo del Ministerio de Cultura de Taiwán. Este trabajo se ha expuesto durante el 2023 en Lishan Art Space, OneOffs NFT International Art Fair (Taiwán) y en la Breaking Convention (Reino Unido).Desde 2021 colabora en la composición musical con la compañía Cosmonautas Teatro de Sombras (Argentina/México), realizando presentaciones en Argentina, Oaxaca, CDMX, Querétaro y Guanajuato.En 2021 crea su proyecto solista SonidoSureste, que busca explorar en las sonoridades de la música tradicional de Oaxaca y de la zona del sur del país, creando nuevas versiones combinando el violín, la voz, el diseño sonoro y la loopstation. Con este proyecto ha realizado presentaciones en México y Argentina
