Volume 4 of the Make Up series is another doozy and this one brings together accomplished house heads Camille, Chez Damier, and Nico Lahs in a celebration of underground disco classic "through the lens of 60's and 70's underground comix". Similar to these rebellious reads, the tracks on this release carved their niche with purists seeking distinct and thrilling sounds. Across the double album, Camille's contributions include Mystic Pleasure's 'Back Door (Getting Down)' and Cold Fire's 'Badder Than Bad' which both bring soulful melodies and infectious rhythms, Chez Damier adds Fascination's 'Shine My Love' and Bileo's 'You Can Win' with shimmering vocals and funky basslines and together, they make for an exhilarating mix of disco brilliance.

Bologna has long been touted as Italy’s contemporary epicentre for all classic house sounds—and with good reason too. A city that comprises a small but passionate scene as well as a bunch of clued-in and active crews, the city seems to have embraced the sound like few other cities in its home country. Taboo Traxx is one such label. Helmed by local producer Jacopo Latini (better known by his production alias, Jackie), their first release is a roaring success, with three tracks of note on display here via their inaugural VA. 

The release kicks off with the sumptuous sounds of The Hush’s brilliant ‘Aquario’. Much like its title alludes to in a sort of underwater, Drexciya-way, the track really does go deep, with its warm, enticing pads, gentle keys and floating synths all working in perfect harmony. A collaborative affair between Jackie & another Italian producer, T.Oceans. The Hush don’t release music often—but when they do, it always hits the sweet spot. 

The dream-inducing vibes continue on T. Ocean’s ‘Laughing’, another cut that’s layered with classy, sophisticated and timeless sounds. Very Italian in stature, it’s cut from a similar cloth to Don Carlos or Vibraphone Records releases, with more than a nod to vintage NYC sounds. Not much is known about the identity of T.Oceans, but on this evidence of his work here, he or she is most definitely a producer worth watching out for.

Closing the drama is the sounds of Jackie once more, who signs out on a high thanks to ‘Voices’. More nimble and quick-footed than its predecessors, it boasts a similar sound and quality, with this one (and its brilliant baseline) more focused toward the night’s more peak-time flavours.

Over 25 years of digging, and more than 2 years in curation. @NickV ’s debut compilation pays homage to forgotten gems of the classic Italian House scene, circa 1991-1993.
In the early 1990s, Italy hosted one of the most flourishing scenes in the burgeoning world of House music. Whilst the majority of Europe was only just beginning to digest the arrival of this new musical genre born in the US, Italian clubs, DJs and labels were hot on the heels of their counterparts in the already established scenes of New York and London. The clubs of the Adriatic coast – also known as the Italian Riviera – principally concentrated around Rimini and Riccione, were full every weekend with crowds gathering to dance long into the early hours of the morning. The soundtrack was provided by the major US and UK acts from the day but also local resident DJs that had been honing their trade since the early 80s in the clubs and in the studio. By the early 90s, Italian House music was regularly exported around the world with labels such as UMM, Zippy, D-Vision, MBG, Flying, Palmares, DFC and Irma releasing tracks inspired by the original New York House and Garage sound, but with a very different, unique and emotional take. Distinct from both Italo Disco and Italo House, this was the specific aesthetic that was to become the House sound of the Riviera, the soundtrack of the golden era of Italian House music.

Nick V’s compilation on Mona Musique brings together 8 iconic tracks from this specific period, covering the whole spectrum of the riviera sound. From the powerful vocal tracks by Korda and Be Noir to the dubbier cuts by Syncopate and Underground Ghosts, without forgetting of course the characteristic Riviera deepness with tracks from Subway Ground Master, Centric House, Groove Sense and Optik. Artists featured include legendary DJs and producers from the day Ricky Montanari, Alex Neri, Enrico Mantini, MBG and Ivan Iacobucci. The compilation comes in a double gatefold sleeve with liner notes by Nick V illustrated by flyers and photos from the original Riviera days. This is a DJ friendly 45 RPM vinyl only release (due du licensing restrictions), all tracks have been remastered with the sound staying true to the dynamics of early 90s production. To be released on 20th May 2019 on Mona Musique.

The „Sans rouge EP“ is a return to Greymatter’s sampling roots reminiscent of his early works on WOLF Music. A record that sits half way between house and hip hop, in terms of style and tempo. „Sans Rouge“ epitomises that mood: starting out with a hip hop groove that drops into a beat-down house chugger. „Royale“ drops things down to an even slower motion with another tough beat down groove, chopped and driven key samples and a catchy vocal chop. The B-side start with a nice goodie: this is the first time that the full length/12” mix of „Move Slow“ has a proper release (the short version appears on the „7 years who cares?“ 2x7“ on WOLF Music). Greymatter’s most popular track of recent years - more heavy soul chops this time pitched more towards peak time. „Billy O“ finishes things off with a slamming, choppy club jam laiden with strings and vocals. Another mighty fine Quintessentials release that shows all the talent of Greymatter!
