Sarah Bernstein and Kid Millions started playing together in 2014 when Sarah asked Kid to improvise with her at a show at JACK in Brooklyn. The two quickly established a strong musical rapport and were eager to collaborate further.

Tense Life is the first studio recording for the duo. It came out of an incredible recording session at the historic Gowanus Old American Can Factory, in Brooklyn, that managed to capture the magic the musicians have been generating since they first played together onstage.

The atmosphere of Tense Life is raw, intense and somehow celestial. The sound of Sarah's violin is sharp like a knife and her voice is at times haunting. Kid Million’s drums roll like an army of ants biting flesh and this is punctuated by the occasional beat of doom. These are sounds to shake your feelings and they leave you with the sense that you just can’t get enough.

Kid Millions & Sarah Bernstein's Tense Life out now on 577 Records

This project is the exciting, unusual and at times unexpected result of five musicians from different backgrounds getting together in a room and making music together for the first time. The chemistry they create is driven by a telepathic understanding, hence the title of the album. 

This is not the first project for musicians Daniel Carter, Matthew Putman and Federico Ughi. The three have been collaborating closely for the last ten years. Their first album, The Gowanus Recordings, (also featuring Demian Richardson and Dave Moss) was released in 2009. 

Daniel Carter was born in Pennsylvania and grew up in Massachusetts. His musical background includes recording and performances with legendary artists such as Sun Ra, Yoko Ono, Cecil Taylor, Living Colour, TEST, Other Dimensions In Music,  MMW (Medeski Martin and Wood), Jaco Pastorius, Sonic Youth and many many others. Pianist Matthew Putman grew up in Ohio where he studied classical music and theatre. He is a renowned scientist and educator, best known for his work in nanotechnology, the science of working in extremely small dimensions. Drummer Federico Ughi grew up in Rome, Italy. He has developed his own style through the years, studying with master Ornette Coleman and playing and touring the world with celebrated bands like The Cinematic Orchestra and Blue Foundation.

On this record Carter, Putman and Ughi collaborate for the first time with Texas-born clarinet player Patrick Holmes (a brilliant up-and-coming member of the New York downtown scene) and veteran bassist Hilliard Greene, a mainstay of the avant-garde for the last 20 years. He has played with Cecil Taylor, Don Pullen, and Charles Gayle among many others.

Daniel Carter’s poetry is featured on the cover of these exclusive limited edition vinyl LPs.

Telepathic Alliances

Daniel Carter, Patrick Holmes, Matthew Putman, Hill Greene, Federico Ughi 'Telepathic Alliances'

Federico Ughi, New York drummer, improviser and producer releases a new studio recording to celebrate the 20 year anniversary of his very first album, recorded when he resided in London, UK. The theme of the album is Ughi’s experience of home, and how it has evolved, living between Brooklyn, New York, his native Rome, Italy and all the places in the world he has passed through while touring. It’s Ughi’s deeply personal meditation on all the incredible things he’s gotten from traveling to so many places, intertwined with the melancholy of never being able to feel like he entirely belongs to any one of them. 

The album features British saxophonist Rachel Musson, as she was the original musician featured on that first album,The Space Within. Since then, Musson has gone on to become one of the most prominent voices in improvised music in the UK and Europe. And while she and Federico have lived on different continents for much of the past two decades, they continued to collaborate, play and record together. She performed at the Forward Festival 2018 in New York and will be releasing two albums on 577 Records; the first with legendary British musicians Pat Thomas and Mark Sanders, the second with the “monster trio” of Daniel Carter, William Parker, and Federico Ughi.

This is G. Calvin Weston’s third recording on 577 Records, joining his previous releases, Flying Kites (with guitarist Lucas Brode) from 2015 and solo album Improv Messenger from 2016.

G. Calvin Weston has blazed a harmolodic, funkadelic trail through modern jazz. Listen to the man who funked-up Ornette Coleman's Prime Time Band in the 1980s and worked with legends such as James Blood Ulmer, Tricky, John Lurie and The Lounge Lizards, James Carter, and Marc Ribot.
