Around the time my parents bought their first pc, a Pentium 100 with 64 mb ram running windows 95, I switched from protracker on the Amiga to fasttracker II for my music. 

No more one megabyte songs in 8 bit sound quality and four mono track limit, but the luxury of enough tracks & sample memory to use in 16 bit stereo :) . Of course I abused this newfound freedom, lifting a lot of loops from the Hip Hop music I was into at the time with often questionable results. Creating sort of like party jams, reminiscent of early Frankie Cutlass or watered down Fatman Scoop/Crooklyn Clan instrumentals. Basically a mix of unobscured familiar loops playing in succession without worrying about copyright. 

As there weren't cd-burners yet, and the tracks were too big to fit onto a 3.5 inch disk, a lot of attempts at music have died with the harddisk of the machine, but some have been recovered as I sometimes recorded tracks to decrepit cassette tapes, like this compilation of hip hop'ish & jungly tracks made between 1997 - 1999.

Glenn Sogge recently retired to his childhood home on 6+ acres in the Pacific Northwest after decades of school, work, family, pets, and soccer refereeing in the Chicago area. Early in his career, he studied with Luciano Berio, Tom Willis, Jack Burnham, Frederic Rzewski, and Sonia Landy Sheridan. He also collaborated on performances with Robert Moran. The sounds of birds, wind, streams, squirrels, chickens, and the occasional coyote define the soundscape he is now immersed in. The woods and nearby mountains both obscure and highlight the horizons every day. Glenn has done collaborations with Cousin Silas, Candy L, Marco Lucchi, Lutz Thuns, Boson Spin, Jaime Munárriz, Tuonela, grum-pe, and many others in addition to extensive solo work. A recent activity has been creating the artwork for album covers for himself and others.

The Black Glass Ensemble reveals new music for the anthropocene in the margins of classical and experimental music. Combining the cream of Scotland’s chamber players with longstanding pioneers of the UK’s avant-garde electronic underground, the result of these liminal explorations is an emotionally resonant new music that challenges the senses, confounds expectations and breaks open new sonic ground.

Black Glass was formed in 2018 by New Music Scotland award winner, and Queen’s Hall associate artist in residence, Michael Begg. The ensemble has been developed with support from Creative Scotland, HMUK and the Hope Scott Trust.

Central to Black Glass’s vision is solastalgia, the term combining solace and pain, coined by philosopher Glenn Albrecht in 2005 to articulate the sense of existential distress caused by living through environmental change. In it’s innovative use of technology, and palette of bespoke software instruments, the ensemble creatively imbues their work with the mechanisms through which the knowledge of environmental decline comes to us; sonified data streams, satellite and weather monitoring systems; low frequency atmospheric receivers; field recordings; resonance audiograms, and more.

The Black Glass Ensemble are: Michael Begg (scores, samples, data feeds, erosions); Ben Ponton (receivers, recordings, forensics); Clea Friend (cello); Aisling O’Dea (violin); Julia Lungu (violin); Neil Cuthbertson (trumpet); Jen Cuthbertson (French horn); Douglas Caskie (tuned and bespoke percussion).

Aisling O’Dea is the principal violinist with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra
Clea Friend is one of Scotland’s foremost cellists, and performs regularly with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Royal National Orchestra of Scotland
